Intervention time: unless you are fourteen, it hasn't been acceptable to offer "you have no life" as a retort to people being mean to you on the internet (GASP, QUELLE HORREUR) since it stopped being the 80's. In the 80's you could get away with it because the internet was novel enough that no matter how stupid you were being you were still being stupid on the internet and that was automatically awesome. Also, in the grand scheme of things, nothing people said in the 80's is going to be more embarrassing than their stupid hairdos, so who cares.

But right now it's 2014, and you are (probably) not a child, so you should stop being so fucking awkward and witless. Seriously. Every god damn time your poor little feelings get hurt, you start whining about how all the people being mean to you are a bunch of socially inept losers.
Cyberzombie wrote:and your position looks weaker because you have to resort to insults in place of logical discourse.
Trigger warning: you're wrong, and I'm about to be mean to you on the internet.

Nobody here is insulting souran (or you, or Zak) in place of logical discourse. If you'd actually stop bitching about the posts that are causing you all this butthurt and read them you'd find arguments in them. Arguments that you could either rebut or fail to rebut based on your cognizance of the issues at hand and, ultimately, the validity of your position.

Dismissing our arguments because of their tone (as you appear to be doing, unless you actually become illiterate in the presence of mean words and genuinely do not know they are there) is a form of ad hominem. Yes, really. The thing where we make arguments and also call you a dumbass is not ad hominem, but the thing where you ignore our arguments because we called you a dumbass is. It even happens often enough that people have given it a specific name; tone trolling.

Stop fucking tone trolling you whiny dumbass shitbag.

So design a game where you never get hit, and play that.
More proof that you block out or just ignore anything that could contradict what your saying. He gave examples of why victory is all the sweeter when it's ripped from the jaws of defeat.

Zak S wrote: WAY 2: This one has nothing to do with rules, really: Another way to be an asshole is to play a non-tournament game with no prize at stake (by any rules) and prioritize your imaginary person's advancement and imaginary "success" over the group as a whole's fun. It's selfish and evil.
And this is where you're once again wrong. Or at least, strawmanning so hard that you might as well be. At a micro-level, I don't enjoy getting hit in combat. I hate taking hit point damage. It's just not fun for me, at all. On the other hand, I really like winning at combat. To crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamenation of their women? I'm all about that. So how could I achieve that if I didn't risk taking hit point damage? The fact is, I can't.

I work very hard to minimize one aspect (I wear armor, I try not to get surrounded, I react tactically) which also allows me to maximize the other aspect (playing smart helps me win at combat). Ultimately, success is fun. And not just for me. Success is fun for the group. As has been pointed out many times in this thread, 'success' gives the players more control of the narrative. In the simplest form, when you succeed 'good things happen' and when you fail 'bad things happen'. If you enjoy good things, you'll want to 'succeed', even if you don't actually enjoy the thing you're doing at that moment.

I've never enjoyed 'picking locks'. But I do enjoy bypassing barriers. It's a useful skill in the game that allows me to move to parts of the game I like (getting treasure) and avoid parts of the game I don't like (getting murdered by monsters who don't want me to steal their treasure).

Choosing success does not mean prioritizing it 'over fun'.
Zak S wrote: Now perhaps your rules are meant to head off asshole behavior by assholes. It does mean using the rules makes you an asshole--it means that part of the rules is only necessary because you fear there may be assholes.
Here's the thing. Your rule is not really open for 'abuse' in a meaningful way. It's a bullshit bonus on a bullshit check that has no rules around it. Which is fine - that's how most social systems work. But you're extrapolating to things that actually do create 'problems' in the game.

Imagine you created an item in your game that could, if used, kill all the enemies within 100' of me. Let's also pretend for a moment that it had unlimited uses. And let's pretend for a moment that enemies received no save - if I use the item, they just die. This is 'broken'.

The reason is that now my 'fun' is in conflict. Winning a fight is fun - but most of that comes from potential risk. Outsmarting my opponents, making tactical choices - those are things that make the combat fun. But dying is very much not fun. So I can 'win' in a boring way, or I can 'lose' and that won't be fun. There's a real conflict between 'being effective' and 'having fun'.

Good rules try to avoid that.

When people point out that your rule about musical instruments is 'bad', that's what they're saying.

Making people run away isn't winning an argument, it's just bullying. This isn't a staring contest. You don't win because you outlasted the other side and eventually he got sick of hearing insults and decided you weren't worth his time. That just means the other guy has more of a life than you do because he has better things to do than sit on an internet forum and read a bunch of insulting drivel. I mean unless your goal was to convince someone that you're an asshole, you have in all regards failed. He still thinks he's right, and your position looks weaker because you have to resort to insults in place of logical discourse.

Anyone who has held any kind of sales job will tell you that insulting someone is a terrible way to convince them to buy something. It doesn't help you in job interviews to insult your potential employer and call him an idiot. And you certainly aren't going to talk your way out of getting a traffic ticket if you start by calling the cop a moron. Insulting people is an objectively terrible way of convincing them of anything and anyone who has worked in a PR job of any kind will tell you that.

Insulting people isn't debating or arguing, it's just bullying. Plain and simple.
Except that they did actually break down his reasoning and explain logically why he was wrong, by providing real life examples. Actually read, idiot.

I'm just gonna point out that proving someone wrong and getting them to agree with you are two different things. When you have nothing to do, you can be content with just proving them wrong. When you need them to do something, things change, and insults and disrespect discourage them to act on what you say. So being a sales guy and arguing a point just to find out the truth of the matter have two entirely different purposes, and require different approaches.

Aristotle's rhetorical methods were never developed with convincing an opponent in mind in the first place. They were about convincing a third-party audience with no horse in the race. And it works pretty well for that, and since that is a very useful tool in democracy, we hold it up as a pillar of free society. The problem with conventional rhetoric and persuading an actual opponent, then, is that we largely try to follow Aristotle's rules in a setting they are not appropriate for. There are other models out there, but we are largely unaware of them.

The Den, however, doesn't need cooperation. It doesn't need an actual meeting of the minds. It doesn't need anyone to do anything. So the other models aren't that worthwhile. Aristotle's model teaches some logic and some reasoning, but it also teaches you to appeal to your audience. In a public setting that means reflecting the values that the public actually promotes. Here, though, what we value is a core of logic, aggressive argument, and wit. The ability to lay out why you're right in a comprehensible way is secondary to all that. So that's what we do. The Den culture does exactly what you say it does; it discourages people from admitting they're wrong, it doesn't get anyone to do anything. But that's not what you're here for. You are here for the rigorous intellectual exercise of drilling down to get to the bottom of an argument, and the anti-respect culture is partly a result of that, and partly, as PL demonstrates, a reaction to the lack of such freedoms in other places. It's not a nice place, it's not trying to be, but it does do something that is not done many other places. The arguments here are better, the reasoning stronger. And you learn faster here than anywhere else.

Lord Mistborn wrote: Given that your game is a unholy mishmash held together mostly by MTP, why should we suggest rules to you, your not going to apply them consistently anyway.
I always apply rules consistently, that's how you do a rulings-based game. You start with no rules and, as rules come up, put them in forever after and only revise them by group consensus. Do try to keep up.
Still here's a shot, having 5 ranks in preform/NWP musical instrument/whatever grants a +2 synergy bonus to diplomacy rolls in (list social scenarios you feel music bonus is appropriate). That wasn't hard at all.
Doesn't work because it requires "buying ranks" (a reference to a ranked skill system--which we're not using for lots of reasons you can ask about if you like).

Try again.

DSM wrote:The bonus provided by successfully playing a musical instrument is typed as an equipment bonus. Equipment bonuses do not stack with other equipment bonuses. Musical instruments are not the only source of an equipment bonus to charisma checks.
Zak wrote:You haven't fixed anything. One person said a bunch of (unworkable for us 3.5 rules) superceded it, nothing else anyone's said is a fix. If you have such a fix, type it out or link to it. Do your job Crunchy Rules Forum Guy.
Now, I was originally just going to ignore this. After all, it is still the case that you called AH a liar and issued him a challenge to show an example of you being dishonest, and I fucking met that challenge (prior restraint: you were wrong about what prior restraint is and you did try to rewrite the entire fucking conversation to save face about being wrong), and you still haven't conceded or apologized on that point. Normally, that'd be trivial, but I'm fucking sick of your gish galloping: if you want to have a good faith argument with us, you should have it one argument at a time. You don't get to just change the topic everytime it becomes inconvenient for you. But this is another easy goal, so I'm going to take the shot.

You are bad at words and failed your reading comprehension check. I am not describing existing 3.5 rules that supercede your shitty rules, I am telling you that you can solve your problem by adding fancy pants to your game and having them not stack with violins. See how simple and not at all 3.5-y that is? Now, I described my new rule using a handful of 3.5 terminology, but I also just fucking defined the terms in the rule such that there is in no way a dependence upon 3.5. The only thing that is fundamentally required of you to be able to implement my rule is that you add a second piece of equipment which does almost exactly the same thing as the violin (fancy pants) and that when the players ask, "hey, do these fancy pants stack with this violin?" you say no. Which is a substantial improvement over the original rule, and not at all the least bit complicated or in anyway dependent on migrating to 3.5. It doesn't even depend on a skill system (not even one as simple as a binary "can play violin," i.e. the nonweapon equivalent of "can use a longsword" or "can wear armor"), which is your current complaint.

Now, I'm 90% sure you are going to respond by saying something like "my rules don't have nonstacking bonuses," which is going to come off as insane, very likely disingenuous, and resistant to even the simplest and most trivial change. But before I give a shit about that this conversation already has so many other open lines of discussion. You know, like the one in which you were caught being a dishonest shitbag in order to avoid admitting fault and then quietly walked away from once it became obviously unsalvageable, followed shortly thereafter by indignantly insisting that your honor was unimpeachable. That was hilarious, but more importantly: if you really want to retain any shred of credibility you should have the balls to mea culpa that. Because right now you just keep fucking retreat from any facet of the conversation that isn't in your favor, and that's incredibly dishonest.

There's already rules for pretending to be a certain social class (they work not unlike Call of Cthulhu's "credit rating") and thus making a (sometimes worse, sometimes better) impression on who they're talking to.

Since a great violinist can try to impress people of any class and a person in fancy pants (assuming they effectively communicate power, money, taste, or sophistication) is going to get a negative reaction modifier from some people, this doesn't affect your "problem". An optimizer would still want to keep the violin around for the people for whom fancy pants would only invite scorn. Also: clothes are fragile, so the optimizer would want to have musical talent and an instrument in case they got fucked up.

So try again.

Shitmuffin, I wish you would be indefinitely detained from returning to this board. Unfortunately to my knowledge you haven't even been warned not to wish death on people once yet, and that'll probably be what does it in the end.

I know the others don't seem to mind arguing in circles while you lie and refuse to acknowledge any argument that is problematic for you, but honestly it's just tiring me. So until you get your stupid ass banned you're on my ignore list, now excuse me while I go and finish my five paragraph post about how Bananas periodically do not and cannot ripen off the herb and while this matters very little for Bananas the distinction is important to make.

It's what he has always done. Justin Bieber shifts goal posts and discards (and whines about never having said) his prior points in pretty much EVERY post.

Perhaps you should just list the various claims/points/goal posts he has rapidly discarded or ignored just on this topic.

Off the top of my head...

1)"Peace Out" - He was done man, peace out. It was all over, second Justin Bieber post in.
2) "Fight me and my friends at my moms place" - He also felt the only valid place to have this argument was back at his place. Because reasons, back when it was all over, second Justin Bieber post in.
3) "This is only for me, no one can judge another's game" Justin Bieber firmly believes no rule or game can be judged bad. Unless he does it. Like with this rule and the material surrounding it. No explanation, no defense, just bullshit and obfuscation.
4) "People Who Use This Rule Are Bad People" He has come back to it several times, but whenever pressed to defend it, he rapidly wanders off and shifts to new goal posts.
5) "People Who Use This Rule Are Good Role Players" He has at various times taken the opposite stance to 4. But when pressed has never managed to in any way differentiate 4 and 5.
6) "I shall write rules for things I don't want people doing" He doesn't want people having social encounters and spending table time getting a music bonus in them. Except he wrote a rule for it. And then sometimes he says it's good role playing and then other times it's the ultimate evil...
7) "I shall deliberately bog down the game with extra time costs in encounters of types I don't want to spend time playing to punish players for playing in those types of encounters and using abilities I gave them to use in those types of encounters when I offer those types of encounters to them", He has never explained how spending extra time doing what he says he doesn't want to spend time doing could possibly be a good idea.
8) "I shall create bogging down costs and humiliating jokes about PCs to punish people for using this rule until no one wants to use it (and thats a good thing!)" Sounds indefensible? Well it's a big part of his basic original claim and yet he has yet to even try and defend it.
9) "Despite bogging down and taunting stopping everyone from use it the GOOD role players will!" For no fucking reason given.
10) "The bogging down costs, and humiliating jokes are SECRET RULES, but good role players will READ MY MIND and never risk MAKING ME HURT THE GAME like a BAD ROLE PLAYER WOULD MAKE ME DO!" - Because if this wasn't crazy enough already it needed to be a DOUBLE SECRET rule. At NO point has this been explained.
11) "Actually I won't be doing the bogging down and taunting thing I said, not because that would be wrong and only a crazy shitty GM would do it, no because actually this was ALL ALONG a SECRET TEST and I KICK OUT PLAYERS WHO USE THIS RULE because they are horrible people I don't want to game with!" One of his MANY goal posts he shifts to. But then...
12) "Actually it ISN'T a trap for kicking people out YOU IGNORANT PEOPLE WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MY GAME! Because I NEVER THROW PEOPLE OUT!!!!!" Which is... interesting considering he makes rules to trap people he wants to throw out, obsesses over throwing out "terrible people" and "bad gamers" and what with it being his actual position five seconds ago.
13) "Obtaining a cheap bonus in a role playing game is totally the same as taunting real people about the real deaths of there real recently deceased children!" He can't defend this, and when pressed does not, but it certainly keeps trending back into his bullshit over time.
14) "The Dead Child Taunting In Baseball is bad, people who agree with that bad rule are the bad players my different rule works fine without!" - Somehow... yet...
15) "The Dead Child Taunting in Baseball is good because it is a rule in Baseball and how dare you want to change the rules of Baseball you idiots! And my kazoo rule is basically the same so you can't change or criticise it because it is just as good as BASEBALL IS!" - Yeah... well... look it was getting pretty bad by that point.
15) "Prior Restraint!" Was basically equivalent to him writing gurgly noises for about four pages.
16) "Fuck you I don't Play 3E, how dare you assume I play mere D&D as known to foolish humans such as yourselves!" - Because hey ignore the point someone couched something in 3E styled terms because thats what people do and thats the closest thing someone like Justin Bieber might even understand anyway...
17) "Fuck you I DO Play D&D as all true humans are totally familiar with in detail you IDIOTS!" - Because actually wait a second he really DOES play D&D! Recognisable familiar D&D you would have to be a fool not to know the mechanics of in detail!
18) "I will not admit I play an nearly unrecognizable hodge podge of bullshit I inexplicably call D&D!" - And resounding silence once it is pointed out what he actually plays. But he has admitted to it before, but hey the whole "I DO play D&D but I DON'T play D&D!" defense wasn't going well so he walked away from it.
19) "Actually the only recognizable junk in the mess I apparently administer IS 3E rules after all." - Also no admission there, just walked away too.
20) "But whatever the fuck I DO Play it is CLEARLY successful and 100s if not 1000s of people totally fucking play exactly that game! They don't need the game written fucking down THEY READ MY FUCKING MIND MAN!" - But once called on it absolute silence on say, providing the game that 100s if not 1000s of people are playing and have been playing already. Because apparently 100s if not 1000s of people can play a game that exists exclusively inside Justin Bieber's fevered imagination.

And hell I KNOW I have missed ignored points, forgotten and contradicted claims and countless shifted goal posts.

The devoted of Gruumsh respect only drums. No, seriously, what the fuck? If you're going to enforce culturally subjective fancy pants, you probably should not pretend that every member of every culture in the entire multiverse has the exact same taste in music. That's just fucking stupid. Not the stupidest thing you've said in this thread, but nonetheless a painfully embarrassing inconsistency in your quest to disregard all of the obvious and simple improvements you don't want to concede exist.

But hey, cheer up - you can always

Fuck you Haruhi is clearly the best moe anime, and we will argue about how Haruhi and Nagato are OP and um... that girl with blond hair? is for shitters.

If you like Lucky Star then I will explain in great detail why Lucky Star is the a shitty shitty anime for shitty shitty people, and how the characters have no interesting abilities at all, and everything is poorly designed especially the skill challenges.

Cunning, instead of going with "there are no non-stacking bonuses in my game" he went with... refusing to confirm or deny that, and only providing hard examples where the bonuses never seem to encounter each other in person because no one in the world has ever thought of wearing fancy pants in front of fancy people while playing a kazoo. Because you know flat out answering someone's point on non-stacking bonuses wouldn't have been sufficiently dishonest and shitty of him. He just needed to obfuscate with "OH YEAH! Well what about the times when we don't even KNOW if they stack or not!!!!??"

In Justin Biebers games your clothes will be ripped off on levels of physical violence so common that characters don't bother with clothes that have bonuses, and even if they do will carry random musical instruments as contingencies for the common occurrence of losing that bonus through forced nudity even if they did. (And there probably isn't a formal rule for clothing destruction despite the focus on it, or if there is it's shit)

But VIOLIN'S are fucking indestructible, and by comparison kazoos and harmonicas are probably the irreducible building blocks of the universe itself. So when a fireball or an angry house cat goes off and everyone's fancy clothes automatically disintegrate (again) the violins are sure to survive and all the diplomats can play the violin naked while covered in ash and cat scratches to impress people normally impressed by fancy clothes and that's why diplomats all carry violins thus proving DMSMatticus wrong because... wait even aside from how ridiculous all that is... wasn't Justin Bieber trying to claim diplomats SHOULDN'T and DON'T all carry kazoos....? I mean did he just sort of forget where he was even attempting to ramble to halfway through that gish gallop?

Whatever. Apparently now everyone doesn't just play the kazoo to impress the king, they now ALSO carry the kazoo in order to impress the king while naked, burned, bruised, slashed and generally "fucked up" until their clothes fall off. Like the way things apparently are much of the time.

Because that makes everything ok now.

My grandparents' house had a banana tree. The mature tree (looks like a small palm tree, maybe like 6 to 7 feet high) produced the fruits. Once the fruits were starting to ripen we picked them, and then my grandfather would cut down the tree. A bud would grow to full size during that year and produce fruit again next year. My grandfather explained that a banana tree gives fruit only once, so you need to keep cutting them.

#RulesFixing : how it works, motherfuckers.
So some dude plays his kazoo. It's a nice moment, you award a bonus, if he makes a Dex check or whatever, stop him spamming it and getting boring. Same size penalty on a miss, so it adds a little tension when you RP.

-- Cool rule bro, I want that bonus too, so I'll ...

No, it's just for players who make good with the kazoo scenes.

-- Oh, it's an RP reward, cool, so I get it for RPing my fancypants stuff and he gets it for RPing his kazoo stuff.

Yep, you got it.

-- So, the rule really says if you make an appropriate stat check you can get a +1 for anything you've entertained the group by playing out. If it fits the character. So, like, a stunt rule even, find some entertaining thing already in the scene to hang off while attacking, slide down the stairs on your shield or swing from a chandelier, and you can claim a +1 from a stat check. And it's always -1 when you miss.

Sounds good, but only if you're not hogging the spotlight, eh, it's not for every round.

-- Good call, so limit of once per .. like ten minutes real time sound good? Give everyone a chance to try. Might come around a lot in a slow combat though.

We'll try that. It might be too often, but it could work to liven up the slow stuff.
There, sir. Rule design. Learn it. PS. You bonus/penalty is too fucking small, unless you're resolving on a d6 or something. +5, let people succeed/fail hard for their RP, 1/10 minute stuff is only stacking if you're somehow not letting people resolve actions that quick, where it's OK to dominate the RNG.
PC, SJW, anti-fascist, not being a dick, or working on it, he/him.

If you leave the herb, and that's what it is, it will droop down and die at the end of its life cycle. This is the same process as any perennial plant, but larger, it's just more convenient to not have a tree sized herb laying in your yard.

That...is really interesting...and a little sad.

I just last year learned that bananas ripen faster if left in a bunch, so if you want your bananas to ripen more slowly, you should separate them. Most people probably have known this forever, but not me.

MGuy: The point is to normalize 'my' point of view. How the fuck do you think civil rights occurred? You think things got this way because people sat down and fucking waited for public opinion to change?

He's trying to demonstrate that my fix "doesn't work for his table." And if my fix doesn't work at his table, then the original rule cannot be fixed. And if the original rule cannot be fixed, then it's not his fault that the rule is shitty and leads to the absurd "everyone carries a kazoo" result. And if it's not his fault that the rule is shitty and leads to the absurd "everyone carries a kazoo" result, then it must be someone else's fault- and clearly that someone else is the people who use his rule the way he doesn't want him to.

There's basically no link in that chain that isn't crazy, but that is why he is defending his own rule against improvement. Because if the rule can be easily improved, he can't shift the blame onto the people who notice the consequences he never intended.

So then he is currently at a point where he is using goal post "There is only the Kazoo Rule! Fuck you for assuming other ways to achieve Kazoo bonus!"

And currently in denial of his on again off again affair with the goal post "Fuck you there totally ARE a gajillion other ways to achieve Kazoo bonus!".

Or voltroned together you just barely get "Fuck you only I ever get do decide how Kazoo bonus is achieved! All suggestions by others ARE WRONG!" which is basically the war cry of the GM who is really shitty at running rules lite games.

But also I really must again draw focus to how a key part of his defense was how everyone's clothing is fragile and constantly gets destroyed. That's gold.

What's the likelihood of Silva dropping in to this thread?

One casting every six seconds at CL9 gives you a bit more than 40 liters per second, which is comparable to the flow rates of some small, but serious, rocket engines. Six items running at full blast through a well-engineered engine will put you, and something like 50 tons of cargo, into space. Alternatively, if you thrust sideways, you will briefly be a fireball screaming across the sky at mach 14 before you melt from atmospheric friction.
