On the knight: it was cut to 10 levels just because "there's no standard high-level knight", or because some balance problem was found in what a knight 20 might look like?

Also, does anyone know WTFH happened to this and the other Tome threads?

It's really obnoxious how I can't easily go to the last page of actual posts.

Does someone with Insightful Strike use their Wisdom Mod in place of the Strength Mod when Grappling?

For that matter, if you have Weapon Finesse, so you use Dex?

Not sure, it only says attack rolls. So I think not.

I don't think Weapon Finesse would work in a grapple. I mean, they have a hold of you, and all you can do is try to out-muscle them or wriggle out of it.

But I think you could justify getting Wis to it, for being so "Insightful"

Odysseus beat Ajax at wrestling. Given that Odysseus' big things are brains and archery, he's probably using dexterity for those grapples. He's as strong as a hero, but not strong enough to beat an equal-level character with a higher strength.

You could make an argument that Odysseus had a line in on Wisdom as well as intelligence, and it'd make a bit more sense than dexterity from my experience. I mean, I tried wrestling for a while in middle school, and found out there's a bit of planning involved while you're doing it, as well as strength enough to actually alter the situation.

But dexterity? Dexterity's handy for getting out of a grapple, but not for winning one--because at some point you're going to have physically force someone to do what you want them to do (while typing this, I've realized that wrestling lends itself to rape innuendo/metaphors), and that's when it comes down to muscle power and being all dexterous isn't going to help you very much.

Actually, it'd be more appropriate to have a feat that gives you Wisdom to Grappling, as well as Strength.

Actually, he probably just has Improved Grapple, a high charisma, and good PR. Intelligence is a pretty arbitrary thing in D&D. Regardless of Int, a character might say something like 'Let's go over to that huge cave to see if I can get any gifts' 'Huh, no one home. Let's eat his food and wait for him to get back so he can give me gifts.' All the cleverness after that is the player being smart, not the character.

The only high-Int task Odysseus ever does is design the horse, and that could have just been the DM saying 'Cool idea. Let's see how it works', rather than a Craft test.

He also came up with the subterfuge with the flock of sheep in Polyphemus' cave. And the whole "Nobody" thing.

That's the player being smart, not the character having a high intelligence. 'Nobody' was a Bluff check, the sheep thing required Disguise.

So I was recently re-reading advanced combat (particularly grapple) and some things aren't clear to me.

First off, does anything change when movement types other than land are involved? For example, can you "hold down" an opponent while you (or they) are climbing, swimming, or flying? How about tripping them?

Secondly, how exactly does maintaining a "hold down" or "lift" grapple hinder you? Can you attack other creatures? Hold or lift multiple people at once? Can you perform regular attacks or constriction damage on a creature you've lifted, or only a coup de grace or swallow whole?

While it seems like Frank has taken an oath to never talk about the Tome series, hopefully someone else will notice this.

Is the RoW fighter's bonus feats as per the normal 3.5 fighter's bonus feats? The class doesn't include the usual text for it, which opens it up for the fighter to take a number of awesome epic feats, like Infinite Deflection or Damage Reduction.

No, the RoW Fighter gets the scaling [Combat]-tagged feats, although I think most people would let them also take normal 3.5 Fighter Bonus Feats.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

What, "First do no errata"?

If he's a perfectionist it might be because going back and thinking "well, hmm, maybe it could use a little tweak" leads to "oh shit, the whole thing sucks. I'll do it over again", which ends up as a kind of self-editing feedback loop.

the oath wrote:I swear by Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath.

To consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art.

I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

To please no one will I prescribe a deadly drug nor give advice which may cause his death.

But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.

I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.

In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing and all seduction and especially from the pleasures of love with women or with men, be they free or slaves.

All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal.

If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practice my art, respected by all men and in all times; but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my lot.

It's combat feats. Only combat feats. It was specifically said in RoW that old feats needed dumping. If anything official's of interest, make it into a combat feat.

Right now I'm assuming that it's possible to shield bash with any "shield", but that "great shields" can't be used as weapons. If there's any reason that I should be doing otherwise, please explain.

Something like that. Right now, I'm juggling several projects. Every day I add a thousand words to Warp Cult (the master document is at 31198 as we speak), and I contemplate stuff for several other systems.

Working on Tome material is super hard right now because K is off doing his thing and I'm in a different country and all that - but beyond that any concept work I did on D&D would be something I didn't do on AWoD, SRH, DMH, or TNE. That's where things stand right now, and I can't really see it changing from that point any time soon. The Tome series was more than anything else a dissertation on how to go about making content for D&D, and these days people seem to be doing that just fine.

People taking the material, making it theirs, and adding more to the ends was really everything we ever hoped to accomplish with it. I don't feel that I "own" the Tome material, just as I don't "own" any other writing material I put out in the world. People who use it own it as far as that term even makes any sense. It's an idea, and ideas should not be property. They should be shared.

I've actually got a sort of pertinent question regarding how Whirlwind works.

Specifically the +11 BaB part:

+11: Until your next round after making a whirlwind
attack, you may take an attack of opportunity
against any opponent that enters your threatened
area.

Now, by threatened area, does that mean, entering the first square that is part of your threatened area, or entering any square that you threaten?

I've got a 14th lvl character with 11 levels of Fighter using an Extending Kusari-Gama that is affected by Enlarge Person, so that he has 30' of reach.

So while I'm pretty sure that entering his first threatend square provokes an AoO, and leaving said square also provokes an AoO. I was wondering if entering each square after the first would also provoke an AoO, since the creature is still "entering" your threatened area.

Link to Ubernoob's CO Game

Also, I killed two 48 HD Water elementals by "mistake" via AoOs. I didn't realize how big of a deal taking a level of monk for a Con damage to weapon attacks fighting style and grabbing Subtle Cut would really turn out at high level play.

Mostly b/c I've never actually played a game past 7th level or so.

Image

Is how I think it works. However, I might have killed the creatures earlier. Since entering provokes 1 AoO, and leaving provokes an other AoO, I think that I might have killed the creatures before they even got within 20 feet of me.

Does a Knight's Designate Opponent damage multiplied when you make a critical hit or on a charge with a lance?

Bonus numbers get multiplied, bonus dice do not.
