But that's just the way a lot of human social interaction works. We carve society into little arbitrary tribes, and then let those tribes define our relationships with each other. It's arbitrary and stupid, and sometimes results in riots when your favorite football team wins/loses, or 14-year-old kids sending death threats to the guy who didn't give the latest GTA a perfect score. But it's mostly harmless, helps smooth out social interactions, and is so prevalent I don't know if it's possible to remove from the human psyche. There is appears to be no limit to the number of arbitrary lines people can draw.

But people actually debate the religious implications of global warming. Some people say we can do whatever we want to the planet and it will be OK, because God gave the Earth to Man, so whatever we do is part of God's plan. And others think we have a Divine directive to preserve the Earth because after the Earth was given to Man, God declared Man to be Stewards of the Earth, which means we're responsible for protecting it.
I think this is why there's crap like "hate the sin, not the sinner" and other weasel word justifications. It's kind of an unconscious plea of "I don't want to hate you, but it's possible I'll get ejected from the defining organization of my life if I don't".
