I had accidentally put the Jaguar Warriors as his second capital-only choice instead of his first. Sorry about that. Amblis picks first in both capital-only drafts.

Yeah, their synergy with my flying stealthy priests is obvious, right? But I knew there was no way I was getting a shot at those, so it's no biggie.

Quick question. Is it a 400 gold budget for starting troops, as in 200 gold worth of each unit? Or 400 gold worth of each unit?

200 each, but any remainder out of 400 can get you more of one unit.

Thanks. I've updated the template on page 3 to include commander and base unit picks. Resolved a few errors (eg. I accidently gave someone recruitable Erynes due to a typo). I'll run a test game in the next few days in order to test that PD is functioning properly.

Anguished cry from Etimhara!

Basically, I have to decide if I want a unit that is useful to me, or if I want to reduce-by-1 the number of my enemies who might recruit something awful to kill me with. The following units are horrible in the face (with Niefel Giants being a 10):
unithorribleness-in-the-face
Shadow Vestal 809 (Ermor)5
Hydra 1831 (Pyth) 4
Jaguar Warrior 727 (Mictlan) 8
Van 262 (Vanheim)6
Valkyrie 261 (Vanheim) 8
Seshai Anakite 2025 (Ashdod) 8
Ahiman Anakite 2026 (Ashdod) 9

So... more because this will prevent anyone else from having them, then because I want them, I will take:
Seshai Anakite 2025 (Ashdod)

Added benefit, that I can recruit some and guarantee that I will cause horrible losses at least to anyone who tries to kill me early. Zero synergy with my other picks... well, I suppose they can stand near Demonbred and not get set on fire, so that's something I sorta need, I guess.

Nimtir drafts: Mother Guard 209 (Atlantis)

I don't think that one needs a whole lot of explanation.

Does this mean there's a chance that I'll get Hydras, to complement my cold dominion? Happy happy! Joy joy!

Well, it won't be me denying you.

In future, I think some kind of snake draft is definitely a better way of handling the draft order than putting each choice-set randomly. I did okay for the ones that really matter (Mages, Troops, Capital Mages, Capital Troops): 4, 8; 3, 4; 3, 9, 2, 9; 4, 2. That's an average of 6 - but I actually did better than that since the first pick of each type probably matters a bit more (although in some rounds, with for example only a dozen or so good picks, this is debatable.)

But Tador did outrageously well: 1, 3; 4, 3; 1, 4, 7, 5; 1, 1. That's an average of 3.75, and he also goes 1st for Gods and Spells, and 2nd and 3rd for Generals and Priests.

Anyway, in the future I think you really do want some kind of snake draft. Especially with so many drafts in pairs, it'd be good to avoid having people go early twice in a row.

It doesn't even have to be snake, but we had 18 rounds and 9 players - there's no reason everyone shouldn't have had 2 of each rank arranged randomly. One person getting six 1sts is kind of bogus.

We sorta have 18, but the nation name doesn't matter at all; neither does the third round of picking national spells, though (either you want something of which there are lots of flavors, like a blood summon there are lots and they're pretty much the same, or you want something limited in availability and you either get it on the first round or you don't.)

It requires some thought, anyway.

Hydra 1831 (Pyth)

Might give some extra protection against bless rushes.

Also, elephants!

Actual Snake is only fair if there are an even number of consequential rounds and there isn't a strong dependence of what you will want to draft on what you have previously drafted. In this draft, those are both false, and Snake is incredibly unfair. The guy who goes "first" and the guy who goes "last" both get a very large number of double picks - which are insanely useful in this format. Picking two mages together is about a million times better than picking two mages with even eight other selections between them, because you necessarily know that you can pick the two mages whose abilities best complement each other. Seriously: in Snake, two players would get 8 double-picks each. That's nuts. Also: one of them would have been me, which I definitely thought would have poisoned the draft atmosphere.

That is actually a pretty good idea.

I didn't want to personally generate the numbers, since I figured that no matter how "fair" it was, going last in the pick-anywhere mages (as I did) is a lot worse than going last in the second round of build-anywhere troops. Someone was going to get screwed, and I wanted it to be the output of a truly impartial server on some faraway corner of the internet that did it.

As is, the guy who unquestionably got the best draft picks also seems to be a newbie who drafted "awesome stuff" with little thought to synergy. So I think it's probably the best overall result anyway.

So you think that someone picking mages and troops like right now, after everything has been chosen would have an advantage? I'm willing to bet that they wouldn't.

Hey guys, remember when I said this:
An Idiot wrote: I'll tell you what, I'll make an entire nation of stuff that no one picked, and if people want a rematch after this, I'll play it. Hell, I'll play it if this game takes another 2 weeks to get off the ground and people will let me, but I don't think they/it will.
Well, reflecting on my own ill advised bravado has lead me to conclude that I am spending entirely too much time thinking about this game for someone not actually playing in it. So I wanna propose something, I'd like to play in this format, but given the effort involved I doubt we can support more than one of these games here at a time. With that in mind I'd like to put my money where my mouth is with this reject kingdom idea. If people in this game are on board, I propose the following: slot me in as 10th pick in the remaining rounds, and before I make my first pick I will choose all preceding picks and post them, I already have all of my choices in my head if people are worried about delay. So I would post as a block 1 scout, commander, and priest, 2 recruit anywhere and cap only mages, and 4 troops; I'll take the last nation name and see what can be done with the bottom of the barrel.

EDIT: Going to bed now, I'll post in the morning if the response is positive.

I don't mind if Akula comes in under those terms. There are still enough leftovers to make a viable nation with a lot of synergy since he wouldn't be picking piecemeal.

I am opposed to changing the number of players after a game has begun. And I consider Round 13 of a draft to be after the game has begun.
