Theurgs are sweet, man.
I think I'm on the fence between the Theurg and the Uba. The Theurg is better - but the Uba gives me access to W2 and N2.
I've got E3D4S1F1 covered with my initial pick.
Vaetti Hag, 55gp/3RP, [SDNB] is gone, unfortunately.
Consider some options for efficient researchers:
Theurg, 150gp/6RP Sacred, A1W1S2 Old
Mother of Avalon, 130gp/5RP Sacred, N[AN][AN] Stealthy
Mictlan Priest, 60gp/3RP Sacred, [FWSN]
Sky Priest, 70gp/3RP Sacred, A[0.1 FWSN] Patrol
Minister of Magic, 70gp/5RP, [1.1 AWES]
Ice Crafter, 70gp/3RP, 1W forge bonus
Shaman, 110gp/4RP Sacred, S1N1
Guru, 160gp/5RP Sacred, S2N1
Uba 150gp/6RP, WDN[WEDN]
The problem with the minister of magic (for example) is, yeah, he's an efficient way to research blitz, but then he's pretty useless. OTOH, the ice crafter has a W forge bonus which can turn ridiculous pretty quickly if you have any kind of thug chassis (Caelum doesn't so you never notice.) The Mother of Avalon isn't fantastic, but N2 isn't useless as a combat mage - although she's a lot better with spellsongs for fatigue management.
Of these, I think the Theurg is clearly the *best*, since they double as mighty ritualists out of a communion.

Well, it may depend on what Shiritai takes.
I actually totally disagree about research pushers like the Mictlan Priest and the Minister of Magic. Cheap guys with Water 1 or Astral 1 are useless in combat before you have research. But once you're in the science fiction future, having a block of guys spamming Frozen Heart is really very useful in major engagements. And of course the things you do with a bunch of Astral 1 casters in late game battles should be relatively obvious.
I personally would not take the Minister of Magic because his overlap with the master smith is pretty large. But if I didn't have a source for S1, A1, or E1, it would be pretty tempting.

I took the Sorcerer for cross path forging and some of the middling rank rituals. In that regard I was going to get more use out of them, despite the extra expense and upkeep over the Theurg.
Having said that, it was a tough call. The potential for early utility guided my decision, especially as I would not be locked into rushing specific paths in order to get decent value-for-money from the Sorcerer. With a couple of thousand research points, the Theurg becomes a lot more attractive.

At this point, it all comes down to roles. Which do you have covered?
They are:
-Big battle caster
-diversity guy: brings magic synergy or just magic you don't have
-researcher
-small battle caster: cheap, but with cheap boosters he becomes a decent caster
-special ability user: forge, stealth, flight, commander, etc
-thug chassis
-Communion/Sabbath guy

That's what I get for opening my big mouth
.
I anticipate some problems in filling out the balance of my magic suits, actually. So:
Uba 1429 (Shinuyama)
That gives me:
F1
A0
E3
W2
S1
D4
N2
B0
Watch me pick Warlocks instead of Vandouches for my capital-only mage anyway

Frank, K? I hate you both with every bitter drop of my being.
Gimme a bit to think about this one. Any suggestions?

Sorry DrP, but the Van was all a part of my master plan well before the first commander draft. Warlock was my #2.
Tuatha is the next good source of A4 and it comes with Nature. Blood is rare in the middle era and Pandemoniacs, Warlock Apprentices, Gygia, and Demonbred are the only choices.
Personally, I'd go with the Demonbred if you want Blood. Fire/Blood is a good combo, it's H2, is thug-like, flies, and it's not an Old mage despite being a Fire caster.

Teehee. I'll be honest - part of the reason why I picked the Vanjarl over the Caelian Seraph was to further tighten the "Blood Race" and deny folks Blood access. I expected Warlock to be the first pick in the cap-only category as a result, and a lot of the other Blood mages to follow. As K noted, the list of Blood-capables is very short.
Also... Vanadrotts are honestly amazing. Although they cost as much as a temple, they give you a nice suite of magic (including decent access to Blood summons, Blood Stones, and maybe vamps with some work) plus they're thuggable with very minimal equipment. I love them.
Plus, being sacred at least makes him a little bit less costly in the long run, although I wouldn't call him an efficient Blood Hunter (but you work with what you have to...)
I'd also agree with K that Demonbred is probably the best choice given the above requirements. Apprentice is the other good one if you just want Blood access and nothing else.

I don't have a master plan, just Warlocks are made of chocolate-coated awesome. I do of course want blood, but who doesn't? The Tuatha *is* tempting... but I don't want to go for a bless this game, I'm thinking dormant supercombatant.
Therefore, screw it. In spite of my lack of communion support, I choose:
Arch Theurg 41 (Pyth)
Second drunk draft!
F1
A3
E3
W2
S4
D4
N2
B0
Hm... that's not so bad, even if all my mages are somewhat expensive.

The one I'm surprised by is that no one took the Theurge Communicant. I was sure that someone who drafted an awesome caster in the first caster round would grab a cheap-as-free dedicated communion slave to go with it. Especially Amblis, who got the Starspawn in the first round, I was pretty confident he was either going to grab a clammer (like the Uba) or the Theurg Communicant to back up the Starspawn.Akula wrote:I'm kinda surprised the witch hunter didn't get taken as a recruit anywhere, those guys are really solid.
But at this point it all comes to covering your bases. I was hoping to get the Uba to clam for my Warlock, but now it looks like I will have Alchemists Fever Fetishing for my Master Smiths instead. But in any case, there was no way I was going to take the Witch Hunter when I was already looking at the Master Smith and the Warlock - he just doesn't provide me meaningful amounts of magic diversity and I already have a cheap battle mage in the master smith.

Well, in general I don't think that your master smith pick would really have benefited from the witch hunter, but some of the other first round picks would have been well complimented by it. I know that you and I have vastly different ideas about what needs to be done to cover your bases, but I think the witch hunter is a guy that can:FrankTrollman wrote:But at this point it all comes to covering your bases. - Research very efficiently
- Cast fair to good battlemagic
- Serve as a communion slave or master reliably
- Remote two paths
- Lead and bless sacreds if you are doing that
