Yes. D&D is a cooperative game. Players have a reason to work together--that's what the game is supposed to be about.
OK good, you got it.
As a result, they have to find reasons to be a team even if their characters wouldn't work together, or there's no game.
And you lost it....
What you are missing is that to be "working together" everyone needs to be able to contribute equally.
As long as you understand with that last bit that everyone is the players, NOT the characters. So they do NOT have to find a reason to be a team, as they already have it...to play the game. You are mixing the player and the character up.
Play the game, not the rules.

If you make a character who is so anti-social that he won't stay with the party for any reason. Then you're a total wanker and you get what you pay for. This is why I hate it when people make characters separately. I think that character generation should be done together, so you can mesh backstories, make sure you have skills that complement each other, and that you didn't make a Priest of the God of Virgin Sacrifices, and the other guy made a Paladin of Virtuous Piety. Who are going to kill each other the very first second one of them is asleep.

Unless of course, you're playing a PVP Roleplaying game, where there's politics and intrigue, etc.

Except that players can't contribute equally if their characters have wildly different levels of power.

This conversation is done. It was probably done at the top of Page 5 when Shadzar said that playing a game within its rules is not an excuse. I think it's done now that he's said that playing your character in a ROLE PLAYING GAME is not an excuse.

This brings us to the $500.000 question; How do you play the game?

Players play the game through their characters. That is not to say that there cannot be OCC cooperation among the players, but such cooperation (let's just call it kibitzing for now) is the same for the players in the game as it is for any onlookers around the table not playing the game. While players can suggest to other players courses of action that act cooperatively, eventually they can only control the actions of their own characters.

They really should be made together. The problem with recent years and players is that the characters are being made in a vacuum. The idea has moved from having this one group work together for as long as they can live, to jsut replacable characters that just stumble into each other and start adventuring.

The PC party is more or less an MMO group now. One person starts, then another is added, then they go find people with the flashing LFG over their head. This makes sense within the game world, but with the number of players for TTRPGs it isnt like the endless pool of an MMO. The characters need to be made to work together rather than jsut being made and knowing there is enough people that you will find a group somewhere.

IF people stop trying to create a character in a vacuum, but instead create their character with the rest of the group, they will form a better group of players, AND characters.

As long as the DM isnt taxed with a big enough workload that limits it, Bob is always welcome to play in the game, if people like Bob. Bob's character that he randomly made before even knowing of this group isn't necessarily welcome. Bob needs a character that works with the group.

Maybe this thing called player agency is where the problem of recent years lay, because players trying to remove power of veto form the DM, but that power wasnt distributed properly to the PC group, but instead made to seem like it went to the individuals, so players today just play individuals as represented by their characters? So players don't want to be a part of a group, they just are, so that they can play Character X that they designed in a vacuum.

What do you think, sabs?

I think that 1/2 the problem with online RPGs (forums, skype/aim/whateverz) is that people make characters and then try to shoehorn them in, and the party cant' stay together. AND since everyone else you're playing with is on a computer god knows where, and not sitting next to you able to give you the dirty eyeball when your assassin kills his paladin for the lulz and arrpee. You end up with horrible groups that fall apart.

I'm also not really a member of the "taking away DM veto power crowd" My answer to crappy dms, is walking. But, I have access to a gaming group where we have several good dm's.

Player Agency is all nice and good, I guess.
BTW, my #1 hatred of 2nd edition over 3rd edition was that random rolling character stats makes for horribly unabalanced characters.

I played a fun 2E D&D game this weekend. We had fun.
my character had
6, 13, 8, 16, 11, 17 for stats
My friend sitting next to me:
12, 11, 14, 10, 8, 10
The guy across the table from us.
17, 16, 16, 15, 14, 14

You start wondering why you are there, when his thac0 is a 10, and yours is a 20.

Not exactly.

Players play the game by expressing the actions to OTHER PLAYERS. You are focusing on a part of the medium. Its like saying painters make art with brushes, therefore a painter only needs brushes in order to make art. You are forgetting the other tools required.

Players VIEW the world, through the characters, but play it through interaction with the other players.

Lets look at it in the most anti-Gygaxian way....

Players are the actors, the DM the director, the rules the screen-writer, and the characters are the characters of the movie.

If one actor does something with their character the screen-writer, director, or other actors disagree with so that it impedes the production of the story, then that actor will be replaced. They aren't working towards the same goal. The final product. Max Von Sydow having his character attempt to kill Russel Crowe's character when they first met, would not have furthered the story everyone agreed to partake in.
A character in D&D is made the party diplomat, for whatever reason. After conversing with NPCs about a job/task/quest, the diplomat is supposed to relay things to the party including but not limited to the pay. The diplomat supplies the party with false information giving them lesser amount of pay, hoping to keep some for himself. The party goes through with it, and the diplomat collects the reward and pays it out, keeping the excess amount from the rest of the party. Another character learns of this happening later and informs the entire party of it. Decision time.

Here there is nothing wrong with this action in the realm of the characters, because the characters have no say in it. If the rest of the players agree this would be likely to happen and OK that it happened, then the game continues without problem. When the other players have a problem with this action, then a problem occurs.

There is NOTHING in the rules that will or can exist to prevent this. This is either a bit of good roleplaying as agreed by the group, or bad roleplaying as decided by the group. The group is the players and decides what they will accept and not. The same goes for characters allowed. Be they kender, drow, etc.

You have to understand the difference between the player and character to understand and play the game. You must be able to separate them.
Play the game, not the rules.

there is no set of rules for roleplay because trying to codify your make-believe is only going hurt it

there are rules for making characters to give players in the system a concrete idea of their characters capabilities in certain areas

so basically, shadzar, you're trying way too hard to put the onus of balance on the players and not the system

No, the balance of power should be on the system.
The balance of the party should be on the players.

Just because you can make a broken mary sue character who will destroy the game, does not mean you SHOULD.

but requiring people to purposefully not take legal choices because it'll screw over the party as a whole is the fault of the system, not the people using the system

I can make a dwarf who likes to stab elves and bbq their toes. But if the rest of the party is full of elves, I'm being a dick.

It's the same thing. I CAN make Pun Pun, there will always be loopholes. But I really shouldn't.

there's a huge difference between Pun Pun, who abuses loopholes, and a Wizard who just takes the perfectly legal choices, without exploiting a single loophole, and is able to make the game less fun for everyone but him because he just teleported into the midst of the enemy formation, cast Wail of the Banshee, and teleported out. that's awesome, for him, less awesome for the rest of the group who just says to themselves, "so wait why the hell are we even here"

Ever heard of that one spell that lets the enemy detect a Teleportation spell being cast? It's in the Spell Compendium, though I forgot its name. Besides, a DM that LETS a Wizard do that without any kind of plan to punish the Wizard for being a dick towards the rest of the group IS A FUCKING MORON!! Lastly, didn't Wail of the Banshee have either Saving Throws or Spell Resistance? Or did it have both?

Oh my god, stop whining about Wizards, you're a broken record whose WRONG.

First off, teleport in, Wail of the Banshee, teleport out is 3 rounds.
Secondly, teleport is a 5th level spell, Wail of the Banshee if level 9

You have to be level 17 Wizard to cast that combination.
A level 17 fighter has a +10 fortitude save, he's got 160 hp, and 9 bonus feats.

So that fight looks more like this:
Wizard teleports in, fighter goes first, uses 4 attacks trips you, hits you 4 times, and does 1d10+22 damage with every attack. You either Die, stand back up, or cast wail from the ground, he makes his fortitude save (He only needs a 19 on a roll he's getting +13 on minimum). New round, he goes again, attacks 4 more times and kills you.

Heaven forbid there's a Rogue nearbye with AoO to make you eat a giant backstab.

yeah, I suppose that could happen. if the Wizard were mentally infirm and took no precautions and teleported into the Fighter's jockstrap.

honestly, if you try to argue for martials ability to engage casters in 3e or AD&D it just indicates that you really have no idea what casters can do.

so let's see, Wizard teleports in, Fighter goes first (even though Wizard can cast a spell to get a huge initiative boost), attacks the Wizard, oh shit Wizard is an Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil, Fighter now has to save or be fucked. And his attack doesn't get through. even if it did, Stoneskin would reduce the damage to laughable levels. Wizard goes, drops an Empowered Split Ray of Stupidity on the Fighter. Fighter is now a vegetable.

this is a single possible counter among dozens in that one situation. martials don't win against any partially intelligent caster.

Sabs, I can't see Plebian, because I am wise, and while I'm absolutely certain his analysis of the game is worse than yours...

Yours is pretty terrible.

1) Wail of the banshee can't even be cast at DC 19, it's 10 + spell level + Int mod, and your int has to be 19 to cast it at all.

2) The Fighters fort save would be way higher than +13. +15 would be the absolute minimum if he was undead and had no Con score.

3) The fighter does not get to full attack the Wizard, because the Wizard does not teleport in adjacent to the Fighter, because he's not stupid.

4) More estorically, the game is not PvP. This whole example makes no sense, but I can appreciate that is probably mostly Plebians fault.

The problem still remains, these characters are being made in a vacuum. They are being made to solo, but the game isn't about soloing.

No, the game is no PVP. But I'm tired of idiots like Plebian cherry picking 9th level spells, and going, "Zomg, fighers are gimp next to a level 17 minimum Wizard." He always has his spell casters walking in with tons of spells pre-cast, and using 9th level spells and pointing out how that makes the level 5 fighter useless. It's stupid and irritating.

I was away from book and it's been a while since I had to figure out fort saves. The point remains, a level 17 fighter is going to make the fort save or die most of the time. Even from a level 19 WIzard with a 20 int.

The fighter has a Haste item, and spell turning ring. He's level freaking 17. Perhaps it's a Level 17 Drow Fighter :)

But really, if you're making an encounter that has a level 17 Wizard in the group, if that Wizard teleports in, casts Wail of the Banshee, and teleports out, chances are incredibly high that:
1) He's not killing anyone
2) He's going to die

I think that is the whole problem with the fake problem. People are doing just that as if someone would play such a character, and then saying because a character can be made like that, then it is a problem. The fact is people don't or shouldn't play a character like that.

The reason these characters may exist in some games if from net-decking. A carry over from CCGs, where someone "builds" a good deck, and others copy it and use it. Thus someone "builds" a character, and everyone else starts using it.

They forget that a CCG has the purpose of being the other player, while an RPG is often working with the other players.

The though experiment goes awry.

Actually, D&D can definitely include PVP. My very last session of 3.5 D&D was filled with Party on Party combat. It was actually a lot of fun what with all the exploding people. (It was also very short)

But now the thread is about Fighters vs. Wizards so whatever. Protip: Fighters will never beat a Wizard with a standard spell load out and especially not one that pretends he's batman. This applies at almost all levels of D&D.
Shadzar wrote:The fact is people don't or shouldn't play a character like that.
And no one will disagree with you on that. People generally don't play broken-ass characters. They definitely shouldn't play broken-ass characters. The system still allows for broken-ass characters. The System is Broken.
That's all there is to it. This is very simple.

I love how picking one possible permutation of caster supremacy = cherrypicking spells

the point is not the specific spell, it's the way spells are handled. there is literally a spell for any situation and a plethora of spells to remove threats from the game; you want me to say Ray of Stupidity? or Shadow Evocation? Stone Sphere? Burning Blood? it's not any single spell, it's spells in general.

Random mechanics question:

In the teleporting wizard scenario above, doesn't the wizard get to act before initiative is rolled because the fighter is surprised?
