Using races from other realms

Post by Becvar »

I am playing in a 4e campaign, general setting. I am very interested in the possibility of using a Genasi Swordmage, but the GM is a bit hesitant, as we don't know how classes and races are balanced across realms.

So, my question to you guys who know more than me (especially since this is the first D&D I've played since AD&D) is - Are classes and races introduced in Eberron, Manual of the Planes and Forgotten Realms balanced so they could be used in a standard, i.e. Keep on the Shadowfel, setting, so long as we utilize a good backstory for them to be there, or are they going to overpower things?

This is so retarded on so many levels that I can only compliment Elennsar returned on his epic trolling.

Kaelik, I know it's hard for you, but seriously, let's not be a rude cockbrain towards a sincere question.

Becvar: 4E stuff is balanced on the assumption that stuff is interchangeable between settings and editions. So even though Genasi and Swordmages are FRPG exclusive content it's expected, even desired that you will export them directly to your Eberron or Dark Sun campaign--for example, they still print Swordmage stuff in Arcane Power and Adventurer's Vault 2.

I would still check with your DM to see if there are any restrictions on extra-campaign stuff, but game-mechanically there should be no problem.

Your freedom to add and change rules in the middle of the game is in direct conflict with my ability to understand that rules system before I decided whether or not to join your game.

In short, your entire post is dismissive of not merely my intelligence, but my agency. And I don't mean agency as a player within one of your games, I mean my agency as a person. You do not want me to be informed when I make the fundamental decisions of deciding whether to join your game or buying your rules system.

So just to be clear, you think that someone brand new to the internet looking for 4e help would end up here? Asking us about 4e? Really?

you make a decent point Kaelik, but it's still possible (regardless of how implausible.)

Thanks you for taking this for what it is, a legitimate question. All of us in the group are new to 4e, and a forum dedicated to GAMING seemed like a logical place to ask the question. Glad to see I was not disappointed.

With the exception of one. Well, from what I've seen in forum communities, there is always some lamebrain asshat who WANTS to stir up drama by calling any question that doesn't involve an existing intense knowledge of the subject to be a troll. Unfortunately for him, there are intelligent people out there who simply have a question about the basics.

New to this forum is not new to the internet. I've been online in one form or another since the direct-dialed BBS' of the late 80s and early 90s. Just because I'm new HERE, doesn't mean I'm an idiot or a troll. You, sir, simply need to get a real life, rather than amuse yourself by trying to stir up drama.

Don't worry, Kaelik is an ass.

But yes, 4e stuff is darn near interchangeable. I barely remember anything that was balanced by some setting-specific in 3e, either. (tho it has setting specific classes which just plain weren't balanced, in setting or not!)

No one is trying to stir up drama, I was just complementing an extremely good troll.

If you weren't brand new to the internet, you might have discovered one of the 400 or so more popular gaming forums that show up first on a google search and don't explicitly call out 4e as a shitty game of failure.

So yes, the only way you could be posting asking a 4e question here is if:

a) You are not new, and are trolling.
b) You are incredibly bad at internet searching and did not read a single thing before you posted.
c) You are just generally too retarded to be able to tell the difference between liking something and not liking it.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt with a), because it's far more defensible than b or c.

New guy, I find it easier to just disregard anything Kaelik says. He doesn't quite get how humans interact.

Kaelik, the only one trolling here is you, but that shouldn't surprise anyone, given that you're a useless cockbag. Please redirect your ejaculate back into your own mouth and swallow so other people don't have to deal with it rather than spraying it over the keyboard like you usually do.

Anyways!

4e can basically be played out of the box with pretty much everything without notably screwing with the game. Power creep does inevitably occur, but is fairly minimal, and there's only a few "bugs" that appear, where certain powers can break the game's sense of balance when used, which are often fixed by WotC's published errata. However, WotC errata also basically borks the game into nonfunction overall again by making all the numbers skewed all over the place, and recently infamously removed an entire character option (melee-using clerics) by errataing their powers into uselessness. So you're best off ignoring most all WotC errata and just fixing things if they seem extremely off, and also just keeping in mind the sensible limits of only taking powers which are supported by your main, maxed stats.

Weirdest thread ever. Ever.

Becvar, just to satisfy my curiosity; would you mind telling us how you found TGD? Your used search methods might be very revealing for future use here.

Seriously. Think about it. Kaelik either got reverse-trolled, by someone who is completely innocent; or he got trolled so hardcore, that everyone else is calling him a cock mongling troll-clown.

Either way, I don't normally see something like this. Two completely extremely opposite possibilities, so early in one thread.

I'm sure there's weirder stuff out there, but seriously; a quantum state thread where you are either being reverse-trolled, or being called a troll, after accusing someone else of trolling; is really weird to have in a single thread.

Actually, that's not surprising at all. They already call me a cock mongling troll clown when I am completely 100% correct about something, or when talking about things in which the balance of probability favors me, or right after they explicitly state that they were completely wrong and I was completely right.

So that they call me the same more so when I am actually wrong (assuming this is the one in thousand chance of someone discovering TGD before any other gaming forum and then posting a question without reading a single thing first) is not surprising at all.

Becvar sounds genuine. But I'd really like to know what made him choose TGD over forums where 4e is more popular and which, frankly, are more popular themselves.

Well, I'd ask 4e questions here, because I know I'd actually get an answer.

Which is way above many other forums.

In theory the dude could have come here from dumpshock or something like that and lurked a while.

Anyway, to be fair, this is probably one of the best gaming forums I've ever been on as far as interesting content all in one place.

Wow, the Den is jumpy lately.

Must be with all the people showing up out of the blue.

But, anyway, Becvar, I apologize on behalf on the Den for the weird welcome.

This place is the acid test for game design. If it can withstand the vitriol and bitterness and niggling the Denizens can throw at it, it must be pretty solid.

His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Meh, I discovered this place on the back of WoD, and I'd put all my 4e questions to the populace. More likely to get a real answer than asking the question to any forum which think that 4e is God's gift to RPGers.

While M:tG makes a lot of use of "set balance," Dungeons and Dragons really doesn't. There are some Magic blocks where a creature being a 4/5 is a powerhouse (since it is virtually guaranteed that your opponent will have to sacrifice 2 or 3 cards to stop it), and there are other blocks where any creature that does less than 5 life with an attack is too slow by definition. If you want to transplant a card from one set to another, Magic players will justifiably give you the hairy eyeball.

But D&D classes? They are all written to fight the same Monster Manual. It doesn't make any difference if you are playing a Forgotten Realms class or an Eberron class. The balance point is supposed to be the same. They use the same material and the same opposition.

Not so sure about that. At least 2 of their admins have a massive hard on for 4.Fail, and I suspect part of the reason why I was being temp banned so frequently before I gave up on the place was because I was blasting 4.Fail.
