"[William Statom] blamed the hostile political environment on what he considers President Obama’s general “lack of respect” throughout his years in the Oval Office. He also dismissed the suggestion that this year’s presidential race has contributed to the hostility in a significant way."
Shit, does this guy think Obama is responsible for 9/11 and the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, too?

Eh, nothing new. The Republicans blame everything bad they do on President Obama. Hell, the whole idea behind obstructionism is that the GOP fails to actually do its job and then blames it on the sitting Democratic president for not doing...something. Remember, when Congress overrode Obama's veto to pass legislation that could open up service members to legal action from foreign governments, Mitch McConnell had the balls to say it was Obama's fault.

The GOP has no shame. They've indoctrinated a culture of lying, blame-shifting, and terrible policies. Which is why they are now the party of Trump.

They're going to lose this election. They're going to lose it as bad as they can plausibly lose it. They'll maybe lose the Senate too. And they aren't going to learn a goddamn thing from it.

Even Trump is admiting that he "might" lose.

Huh, who would have guessed that Hair Furor would be more self-aware than Romney? He went at least as far out of his way to surround himself with yes-men. I know he gets most of his info from alt-right social media, but I guess his ego has him watching mainstream reports about himself enough (and they're relentlessly negative enough) that some of it penetrated the bubble.

Trump's odds in the election are significantly worse than Romney's were. I'd guess that's why.

Watching political jokes from months ago is great.

"Grab them, hug them, kiss them" -The name of Trumps book on dating. That joke is a lot less funny now.

You know what isn't? The one where he got second place in the Iowa caucus, called it rigged, and demanded a redo.

Fortunately for them the renovated Trump University has that covered with their Rewriting History 101 and Fibbing in an Interview 101 courses.

Hey, I thought I'd post my thoughts about California ballot measures, now that I've wrote something about them.

51 (Big School bond measure): Yes, fund schools.

52 (Hospitals pay a fee to receive state money which is matched by the federal government, this writes that setup into the constitution): This is a good measure, but I don't want it written into the constitution. That will make it even harder to pass a budget by making even more of our budget non-discretionary. The legislature can extend it themselves. So, no.

53 (All bonds over 2 billion need voter approval) : No, this is some idiot throwing a temper tantrum and would fuck everything up.

54 (All bills must be publicly posted for 3 days before votes, all legislative sessions are recorded and posted): Not sure. Transparency is good and this allows the waiting period to be waived in emergencies, but it also leads to more attack ads. Ultimately, it seems like a measure that empowers lobbying and constrains politicians. It's up to you which group you trust more.

55 (Continues raises to top marginal income tax rates to fund education, begins to kick in at 263k for single filing): Yes, progressive taxation on the wealthy to fund education is good.

56 (2$-a-pack cigarette tax and taxes on other tobacco products and e-cigarettes.): Yes, but barely. It's a regressive tax imposed on a highly addictive item. It's going to hurt some people and they can't just decide to go cold turkey without pain.

57 (Makes it harder to try kids as adults, makes non-violent offenders eligible for parole earlier and allows more people to get reduced time for good behavior.): Yes, this encourages rehabilitation and will allow us to safely reduce prison overcrowding.

58 (Allows schools to have duel immersion classes, reversing a stupid measure from '98): Yes, duel immersion is far more effective at teaching kids who don't speak English.

59 (Advisory measure telling elected officials to do what they can against Citizen's United): Yes, it's advisory, but dealing with money in politics is a good idea.

60 (Cash grab thinly disguised as requirement for condoms in porn filmed in CA): No, when LA tried doing this, requests for permits dropped by 95%. So, this just drives porn underground and OSHA already regulates this. Just an awful idea all around and is opposed by both parties.

61 (State agencies must pay the same amount as the VA for prescription drugs): No. First, the VA's prices are not made public, so this can't be implemented. Second, drug companies could just refuse to sell to California state agencies or raise the VA's prices. It's a good goal, but bad execution.

62 (Ends the death penalty in CA): Yes, the death penalty has horrible racial and class bias in its use. Too many people on Death Row are exonerated for it to be justice.

63 (Bans grandfathered large-capacity magazines, requires permits to purchase ammunition, requires reporting of thefts and tightens penalties for violating gun regulations a bit): Yes, this is all the common sense gun regulations we should have had decades ago.

64 (Weed legalization and taxation): Yes, this is long overdue. (Many smokers don't like it because of the tax, they prefer the de facto legality it has, but fuck those guys)

65 (Stores currently have to offer bags that are not disposable plastic but can charge 10c to pay for them. This redirects that 10c fee to Wildlife Conservation): No, this is the work of paper bag manufacturers and is just meant to sink 67 by turning retailers against it.

66 (Speeds up the death penalty process): No, this is meant to sink 62 and would only make our use of the death penalty even less just.

67 (Upholds the ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery stores and allows them to sell paper or reusable bags for 10c): Yes, this is very good for the environment.

One source I pay a lot of attention to is FCLCA, the liberal Quaker lobbying arm. I pretty much share their values, so their arguments usually make sense to me.

As a non resident of California who never visits, I have less than no idea what California ballot initiatives are by number. While it's certainly possible for me to simultaneously look up what all of them are and open that up on two screens and go back and forth between the two, if your post requires an appendix to be legible at all, it has failed as a forum post.

It is traditional in California for groups opposed to a ballot initiative to go out and make their own ballot measure that would neuter or walk back the effects of the initiative they don't like or use similar language to go the other way. This confuses voters and lowers support for the measure they don't like and if both measures pass because of the resulting confusion then everything comes up Millhouse.

And then because the initiatives get on the ballot in the order that the paperwork is completed rather than the order the initiatives were submitted, there is absolutely no guaranty that the opposite world version comes later in the numbering order. So the ballots are always really confusing and that is at least partially because there are multi-million dollar industrial advocacy groups deliberately making them as confusing as possible.

So 62 is a measure to repeal the death penalty. 68 is a measure to have moar death penalty and also put death row inmates to work in slave pits with the proceeds going to private citizens. That is not a joke. 62 is sane and 68 is insane, and I have no idea what happens if they both pass.

67 is a measure to prevent grocery stores from giving out disposable plastic bags. 65 is a measure to make it more difficult for grocery stores to sell reusable bags. 65 is an attempt to undermine 67 and make it more difficult to implement. You should vote for 67 and not for 65, things are bad if 65 passes, as it gets really funky whether or not 67 passes at that point.

58 is a straight repeal of a 1998 measure that made bilingual education worse in the state of California, which was terrible. So you should vote for 58.

53 sets arbitrary procedural roadblocks in front of future measures that happen to cost more than $2 Billion dollars, which will have the longterm effect of making our shit even more complicated because big projects will have to be arbitrarily divided up into a series of $1 Billion dollar puzzle pieces that Voltron together and heaven us if we end up getting four out of five lions or something. Vote against that shit.

61 ties prescription drug payments of California State agencies to the prices paid by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Which sounds fucking bizarre until you remember that the VA is allowed to negotiate drug prices and Medicare isn't, so the VA pays a lot less for medications than other governmental agencies. Note that there are a lot of ways this can go badly, because the pharmaceutical companies quite like the current situation where they rip people off right and left and have a number of ways to take their ball and go home rather than accept a markdown. Also, if we subsequently get a Trump administration or a Republican veto proof majority that strips the VA of its negotiating power, then 61 fails outright. However, you should vote for it anyway because the most likely scenario is that drug companies say "Fine, you got me" and then people who get their medication through state programs pay less moneys. 61 would be a lot less likely to work if it wasn't the biggest state. I have every confidence that Pfizer would tell Montana that they just weren't getting drugs any more if they tried to demand unilateral markdowns. But I rather suspect that California is big enough to get in on the same deals that the VA gets for roughly the same reason that the VA is big enough to get them in the first place.

54 is a generic procedural roadblock on all future legislation, but one I happen to support. It requires that all legislative proposals go online three days before they can be voted on in the assembly. This makes the government less agile - it'll be a 3 day wait before emergency Godzilla funds can be voted on. But it also gives groups time to fight back against "sneaky" legislation. So on the balance I'm pretty OK with it.

60 is a mandate for condoms in pornographic films, which is a terrible idea. Not that most pornographic films shouldn't have condoms, but it's not like creampie fetishes are going to go away. And the last thing we need is to drive pornography production under ground so that the workers don't get worker protections. The measure isn't going to stop any AIDS cases and it is going to make it more difficult for some people to get the law involved when there is exploitation of sex workers. It's well meaning in its symbolism, but that is fucking horrible and you should vote against it.

If they both pass, it depends on which got more votes. If 68 has more votes, 62 is void. If 62 gets more votes, who knows, they both go into effect.

Yes, it allows duel-immersion classes again so that kids actually have a prayer of learning english.

Interesting, I've seen a lot of doubt that it would work.

One of my problems with it is that it would allow recordings of discussion in the legislature to be used in attack ads. So, I'm torn.

Also, OSHA already regulates the use of condoms in porn. This measure would see it's creator given a new cushy job which he would be almost impossible to remove from. It also allows private citizens to sue porn producers if OSHA doesn't act fast enough and pocket a portion of the winnings.

Edit: added quick descriptions to my earlier post.

Apparently it's been done elsewhere on the internat, but a discussion with a couple of my drinking buddies just decided that the way to represent the candidates as cocktails would be as follows:

A Trump would be a Manhattan where you substituted Goldschlager for the bourbon and then set it on fire before serving. This reflects Trump's geograpic business roots, his gold obsession, his flakiness and the current state of his campaign.

A Hillary would be a frozen Daiquiri where you swapped out the traditional rum in favor of Banker's Club™ Brandy. This reflects Hillary's reputations for being ice-cold, seeming to be something she's not and her speeches to big banks.

Very likely. But the frenzied crazies probably won't be Trump supporters. The violence thus far has been virtually all directed AT Trumpites and authorities from individuals associated with groups like Black Lives Matter.

It's genuinely horrifying that you think this is true.

The world of Scott Adams where Hillary supporters steal yard signs sometimes and condemn Trump supporters on twitter is the sum total of violence and intimidation in this election is a world of willful ignorance that is difficult to understand. Trump supporters are waving guns around. They are building bombs. This is fucking nuts. Both sides don't do it. This time is different. The Trumpist movement is dangerous, violent, and anti-democratic.

The degree you'd have to have your head in the sand or up your ass to sincerely believe that the violence is not coming from the Trumpists, or that the latest faked O'Keefe video exonerates the movement somehow is significant and disturbing. You are wrong. And your political bedfellows are wrong. Dangerously wrong. And you fuckers will not go down in history as the good guys.

Even if I were a Trump supporter, that would be a really lame comeback. The violence at Trump rallies that so many predicted never materialized - and what did occur was directed *against* the Trumpites, not by them.

The politically-associated violence thus far has been disorganized and low-level criminal. And, not surprisingly, it's been dominated by the sorts of people normally associated with disorganized violent crime.

It would be interesting to see how you would cope with actual directed and politically-motivated violence from the people you so loudly and persistently claim to fear. I don't think you'd be shooting your mouth off if you were truly afraid.

I worry that we're going to find out.

A list of some violent incidents at Trump rallies

That list, from Slate, is roughly half-and-half between events that seem to be instigated by protesters and against protesters. And that's at a very anti-Trump site.

I've noticed that pro-Trump sites tend to focus on the violence directed against Trump supporters and ignore violence initiated by them, and anti-Trump sites the reverse. What a surprise there.
