@catharz

go for bioinformatics. nice cash in there. i made some bioperl applications, got cash, slacked for 5 months of it. took me only a month for the apps.

bad stuff is that you really can't do bioinformatics without some institute or pharmacy corp help. server time is kinda expensive.

I'm a military policeman.

In civilian life I do security. Right now I'm guarding the local water company, but I'm hoping they'll move me to a post with fewer stinging insects and less opportunities to get sunburned.

An ESL teacher in Saigon Vietnam. Some of my group want to found a Vietnamese Live Action Vampire game so they can be national directors and cheese their characters to the hilt and then go home and trottle all the munchkins who ruined their game in England. Ah the power of abusing the system.

BS in Molecular Genetics.

Currently a lab tech at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama.

Applying for PhD program soon.

Dream job: running my own biotech company. Or running a pornographic magazine mega-empire. I'll take either one.

Currently considering retraining as electrician since my college education and degree is (in this region and time) employable as a history of shoveling pig shit.

Lack of funding. Plus, I won't take risks like that. This is paid electrician training, with assistance from disability services in my county/state just in case.

BA English
Secondary teaching certification 8-12 LA/Reading
MS...pending. I haven't finished. But I will be a reading specialist. Downside, I work too many hours in a given week, parents, students, and a feeling sometimes that no one will ever say thank you. Upside, watching student faces as they finally get it. The end of the year when students thank you--a few anyway, and having summer time to plan it all over again.

That's cool.

Note that if you are planning for a future position as a teacher it is important to note what zany requirements your state has for certification and make the required adjustments. For example my MA in Computer Science means squat in NY, there is no certification for Computer Sciene. My BS in Physics means I actually have the credits to get in a physics certification, but they just threw in 6 semeser hours in a foreign language.

Oh and don't forget to expect them to tack something on to the certification the day after you graduate and the day before you apply for the certification. I've given a general glance at the requirements in NY over the years and they keep tacking on more and more to it.

When in doubt, adjunct professoring part time at the college level is easy and fun. Take the evening classes, because most of these are part time students who are already working and really want to know things because they have to apply them right away.

Assuming I take my master's I need to take Teacher's Assistant credits.

That's about it.

I'm serious, Virginia requirements for being a teacher are very, very low.

Much of gaming scene in Malaysia (KL I imagine) I've managed to fall in with a few hard coregeeks and some why not as long as we can finish before the soccer types over here in the Nam but there doesn't seem to be any native gaming community here.

And if you want low standards for teaching come over here. white and speak english is about all it to get a job within a week and if you actually have credentials you can teach at universities. Plus tax evasion and low cost of living makes it higher take home pay than many jobs in the developed world. GOD BLESS THE DEVELOPING WORLD

What do you mean by "here", Malaysia or Viet Nam?

Because I used to chat with a guy that was an international lawyer in Malaysia, and he didn't make it sound like a pleasant place to live. (Hot as hell and mind-crushingly conservative.)

Viet Nam I don't actually know much about.

Although, assuming a research gig doesn't present itself, I will probably own a good bit to student loans, getting a nice university job wouldn't be a bad thing. (Would prefer teaching college or high school level myself, I am not largely fond of children that aren't related to me in some way.)

That would be a very accurate description of Malaysia. I'd also add in "unequal protection under the law" as another downside. Also, major roads in the biggest city flood fairly often, and there is a lot of lightning.

On the bright side, they seem to like white people a lot.

Well, he did mention that I could score with as many asian women as I wanted in Malaysia. I don't know if that was an exaggeration or not, I'm actually pretty homely and not pleasant to talk to.

Stop going to gaming conventions, don't watch so much anime, lay off the chips and soda, go for walks, eat steamed vegetables, and so on.

I've met a lot of chunky (and sometimes.. well.. downright fat) nerds in my life, and they tend to be quite brazen about their self image. As in, they don't fuckin care.
Then the guys wonder why they can't get any female attention.
So I watch what they eat when I'm around them.... Doritos, Mountain Dew, burgers, pizza, I mean cmon guys... it doesn't take Dr. Phil to tell you that you're doing it wrong.

Number one fat-maker IMO: high fructose corn syrup. It's in everything bad for you. Try to moderate that.

Then again, I'm not one to talk, given how I have almost no immune system and could probably be making certain lifestyle choices to help correct that (though I'm not sure what exactly).

Well you throw enough money around (not much by North american standards) yeah you can keep asian girls in your bed almost indefinitely; but it takes the same to keep them interested.

Not all are like that, of course; but the ones that jump in the sack with you on short notice generally are. So yes if you want to have sex and have no qualms regard soliciting prostitution; you can keep yourself occupied with beautiful most nights for little money. It doesn't matter much what you look like or how personable you are as long as you got a 20

A bad personality.

No, wait, aside from that.

While I don't mind stating that I have depression to a level that the other thing seriously might not get a chance to kill me, I'd rather not talk about it. I'm disappointed to say it's not sexually transmitted, but some things... I don't even know why I don't feel comfortable talking about it. I'm just dumb like that.

Yeah, me, too. Except my M.A. would be in English rather than as a reading specialist if the classes weren't so incredibly hard to attend.

Oh, yes, the wife, too, but with the M.A. in education and an administrative credential pending.

Honestly, no one understands teacher life like another teacher. Really. You and the FB are lucky indeed.
