My point is that languages are essentially an adventure tax. You either know a language, or you can't participate in an adventure. So I don't see much of a reason to have language as a buyable feature on the character sheet. If PCs are going to be in OrcTown, then give everyone Orcish for free. It'...

Frank - thanks for the pointers. Really, I think the biggest value of purchasing the Ars Magica IP would be for the name "Ars Magica" itself. Given that the line has been losing a small amount of money for long enough that Atlas Games is no longer going to publish books for the game, I'm n...

I've seen the current devs, back then mostly as mods and general RPG.net posters thinking that the BP/XP divide was a good idea back in... 2011/12 or something. These guys liked it, and even if they didn't like it, went so far down the path of defending that they've gone into full retard denial mode...

If I ever come across a big chunk of change, I'd buy the Ars Magica IP and try and make a better game, it's really not that hard to. The game needs mechanical simplification in many places, reworking combat, and a reworked setting that is logically consistent with simple and much improved, believab...

I'd like to point out that with my group (for a game of 2 years) Aristotelian vs Newtonian physics never even became a thing because I mainly just ignored anything like that in Ars Magica in the first place and used common sense. None of my players read the rule book to the point where they would ev...

Ars Magica has a really small RNG and numeric inputs all over the fucking place. There's pretty much no way to make combat be anything other than a hot mess. Most Ars Magica fans engage in little or no battlefield stuff. They might tell you it's because they are Real Roleplayers, but mostly it's a ...

Combat has been a mess in every edition and either outright failed or suffered from weird edge cases making no sense - i.e. in 4th edition a naked man with a sword would easily kill a man in full chainmal with a sword. When I ran 5th edition for two years, I just avoided actual combat as much as pos...

One of the problems with 1E and 2E was that the freelancers hired to write the world described as if only the cities in the corebook existed. Somehow, over time, that meant creation got narratively smaller, not larger. The blank spaces are meant to be "play" areas for SGs. And yes, it's a ...

I think the lack of rules is 5E's major draw. That's what the people want and I'm not surprised that, with all the 'Rules Lite' RPGs that've been kickstarted and otherwise funded with the idea that less rules > more mentality, that 5E has players. What I'm actually surprised at is the LACK of conte...

All of my friends who have tried 5th Ed have liked it and switched to it. That represents people in 3-4 groups as there's some crossover between groups. Even when chatting to total strangers in the local RPG shop - people in my town at least really like 5th edition and it largely seems to me, people...

Personally I have a huge hate on for narrative story games, at least those that bill themselves as RPGs, since the needs of a storygame and an RPG are very different. Add to that that I'm terrible at the whole social interaction thing... But conceptually interesting, at least. What's wrong with sto...

There are two Golarion setting books, "Pathfinder Chronicles: Campaign Setting" from the 3.5 era and the "Inner Sea World Guide" which is the updated PF version. The differences are minor to moderate, Paizo fiddled with their timelines a bit and changed some cultures and details...

Random tangent here - has anyone ever actually made Tiers out of the pathfinder classes? Or have a link to someone's attempt? 4chan did, actually. Thanks! Minmax boards did it too, with predictable results (the same dumb shit as JaronK's original, but now in Pathfinder) http://www.minmaxboards.com/...

Blade probably did it better. Instead of having multiple vampire organizations, they had one vampire organization with various factions. Faction lines were basically determined by age. The oldskool vamps were loyal to house first. The younger vamps gave no fucks about clan lines. Plus you had the p...

It's amazing reading Frank's assessment, is that it rings so many bells for me as a teenager reading the game. It's why nWoD tried so hard to mechanically re-balance the game... Frank's points were obvious to me and in the back of my mind when I when I first started reading VtM in 1999. But because ...

Godbound - The Exalted Slayer

So, according to therpgsite.com, there is a better game than Exalted, and does what Exalted does, designed by one guy, and is actually better. *Edit: their opinion, not mine. It's still in beta, version 0.13. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4qCWY8UnLrcMTRrWFpjaklkU0k/view I thought I'd throw it ou...
