"level-appropriate fire bolts" cost some larger but also non-scaling amount, like 3 or 10. How do you determine what's "level-appropriate" in a point buy system? There's no levels, and everything else is independent variables! https://www.spcforexcel.com/files/images/nocorrelati...

The entire point of a level-based system is that characters get level-appropriate attacks and defenses. Open multiclassing is not compatible with that. "trading raw power for flexibility" is a terrible design goal. If a character gives up "raw power" then they are no longer level...

Re: What if your PHB had actions instead of spells?

So here is the idea: what if you switched out the spells for actions that all players could use? Rather than doing what most games do and maybe include mechanics for 40-50 types of actions crossing 4-5 subsystems, you instead fill the book with a thousand discretely defined actions/mechanics. I kno...

That's a good point. But Cambions and Tieflings are not "always evil". There's the whole thing where their internal nature is in conflict, they're tortured souls, Darkest Elves (tm), etc etc etc. So there's no moral dilemma when they're babies: you don't kill them because they're not moral...

The same issue exists and is compounded by d100 style systems. If you're supposed to be really good at something, you still end up failing 10-20% of the time. I wouldn't call someone that fucks up 1/5 of the time an 'expert'. I would. In my experience, experts typically do a lot worse than that (an...
