Buh? Sure you're quoting the right person? I asked 2 questions that were matters of fact, and I don't think I expressed any kind of opionions on this system. I'm just idly curious about whether XP usually comes in 1, 2, or 5 digit numbers in the D20 variant discussed in this thread. Also, and separately from the first point, I am wondering whether Dreamscarred Press thinks casting is more valuable than a tiny numeric bonus to attack rolls. Perhaps if I were more interested in the system, I'd get into more complex stuff like whether one thing scales in cost exponentially and the other linearly, but I do all my point buy game systems with Shadowrun / aWoD dice pool system hacks.fectin wrote:But specializing always beats generalizing in D&D. If you're a wizard, and you can give up anything to increase your caster level, you do it and don't look back. As far as I know, that's what "optimizing" means. There is no situation in which "more spells" is less advantageous than e.g. BAB. At best, you're in a screw-you antimagic field, where it doesn't matter because wizards have crap BAB anyway.Avoraciopoctules wrote:How large are are the point buy numbers being talked about here? Compare the Amber diceless system, where you always have weaknesses which are exploitable (often by the other people at the table), and trading down a significant amount on any one area actually makes you overall less capable. Not that it matters, because the setting will shit on you whatever you do and it's MTP anyway. But pulling actual mechanics out does make it easier to talk about.

Taste the fury of fectin's strawman bane weapon! Opinions that never existed don't stand a chance.Avoraciopoctules wrote:Buh? Sure you're quoting the right person? I've gotten a look at the rules, it's an interesting concept but their are some problems.
First it is very complicated to build a character, the XP costs aren't rounded off too one or two significant digits, so even if you are very good at arithmetic you'll want a calculator. The cost to increase your save or BAB increase for higher values, their really should have been a table that shows how much +5 is going to cost you, instead of having to sum values 1 through 5.
Secondly, to make the process a bit easier they made some, perhaps too drastic over generalizations. All feats cost the same, while I'd argue a non-fighter feat should cost a bit more, metamagic feats should cost a good chunk more than a fighter feat. The real stickler is that the cost to purchase casting is the same if you want Wizard, Cleric or Druid casting. Those three options are very powerful, but they are no where near equal.
I've always wanted a working point-buy system for D&D, I've gone so far as to try and make my own, but maybe people are right when they say you can't do D&D right with a point buy system.
