'Ho ho, yes, that'll do nicely,' chuckles the castaway, and proceeds to tell you that the treasure is hidden in a system of caves west of his camp. 'Mind you,' Scrimshaw adds, 'Blackscar's hoard is cursed. Those are pearls that were his eyes. Any thief who tries to steal it will get all they deserve. Don't say I didn't warn you.' With that the mad old man skips off, pleased with his present, ignoring you completely.

Look for Blackscar's treasure?
Look for signs of Cinnabar's pirates?

Eventually you come to a wide cave entrance at the foot of a rocky escarpment. Inside, a tunnel leads off into the darkness.

Light your lantern and go inside?
Head northeast, back to the island's interior, instead?

The tunnel winds its way into the hill until it opens into a high-ceilinged chamber, with stalactites pointing down from the cave roof. A piercing squeaking starts up as, disturbed by the light from your lanternm, three large bats flap down from their roosts to drive you off. As the creatures batter you with their wings, you catch a glimpse of their greatly enlarged front teeth. You must fight the Vampire Bats.

First VAMPIRE BAT Skill 5 Stamina 4
Second VAMPIRE BAT Skill 5 Stamina 5
Third VAMPIRE BAT Skill 5 Stamina 4

While you are fighting one of the screeching bats, the others will land on you and suck your blood. Each round you fight the first Vampire Bat, take 2 automatic damage from the other two; each round you fight the second Vampire Bat, take 1 automatic damage from the last one.

You throw your dagger, doing 2 damage to First VAMPIRE BAT.

Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 19, First VAMPIRE BAT Attack Strength: 17. First VAMPIRE BAT is dead. Bonnie Blood's Stamina is 15.
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 19, Second VAMPIRE BAT Attack Strength: 8. Second VAMPIRE BAT's Stamina is 3. Bonnie Blood's Stamina is 14.
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 22, Second VAMPIRE BAT Attack Strength: 11. Second VAMPIRE BAT's Stamina is 1. Bonnie Blood's Stamina is 13.
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 16, Second VAMPIRE BAT Attack Strength: 10. Second VAMPIRE BAT is dead. Bonnie Blood's Stamina is 12.
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 16, VAMPIRE BAT Attack Strength: 10. VAMPIRE BAT's Stamina is 2
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 17, VAMPIRE BAT Attack Strength: 14. VAMPIRE BAT is dead.

Test your Luck; an 8 succeeds.

Leaving the bats' chamber you continue along the tunnel. Suddenly your lantern illuminates a horrifying scene: a mouldering human skeleton hangs impaled on a row of spears that jut out from one wall of the tunnel. Too late you wonder if you may have strayed too far this time. The next second there is a whooshing, whistling sound and you react instantly. Test your Skill; a 9 succeeds.

The spears just miss your back as you hurl yourself forwards. Picking yourself up from the tunnel floor, you reassess the situation. This place is proving to be more dangerous by the minute.

Continue?
Turn back and leave the caves?

Also, since you just took damage, highlighting the option to eat here.

Continue. Eat a provision, we aren't low on stamina, but we have plenty of food anyway.

And bats that get an auto hit when we are fighting someone else are a lot nastier than skill 5 suggests.

You eat a Meal and continue on.

Not much further on, the tunnel comes to an end before a blank rock wall, at the foot of which is a murky pool. There is no sign of any treasure and there appears to be no way on...unless it is through the pool! You don't know how deep the pool is or for how long you may have to hold your breath.

Dive into the water?
Turn back?

Yeah, this one is a bit dubious, but as a rule, ignore the "are you sure?" sections. Into the pool.

You gasp in shock as you hit the freezing water and disappear beneath the surface of the pool. Feeling your way forwards under the water, you find an opening in the rock wall. Swimming through it you emerge inside another cave. Glowing crystals placed around the cavern provide light to see by, which is reflected off glinting gold coins and the facets of precious jewels. You have never seen such a fabulous hoard. Lying, almost discarded, to one side of the treasure pile is a curious sword-like weapon carved from bone!

Take a closer look at the bone weapon?
Collect some of the gold and jewels?
Leave Blackscar's 'cursed' treasure untouched?

Treasure Golem.JPG (127.11 KiB) Viewed 276 times
Picking up the weapon you see that it has a keenly honed edge and curious lettering etched on one side of its large, curved blade. Hearing a sound like pebbles being tumbled on a beach, you look round and stare wide-eyed in surprise at the sight before you. The treasure pile itself has animated, taking on a humanoid form, and is striding towards you. With the bone sword in your hand you feel particularly adept at hand-to-hand combat (increase your Attack Strength by 1 point for this battle). Encouraged, you prepare to take on the magically created Golem, which watches you with eyes that are pearls.

TREASURE GOLEM Skill 9 Stamina 10

You throw the dagger, doing 2 damage.

Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 17, TREASURE GOLEM Attack Strength: 12. TREASURE GOLEM's Stamina is 6
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 23, TREASURE GOLEM Attack Strength: 17. TREASURE GOLEM's Stamina is 4
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 18, TREASURE GOLEM Attack Strength: 15. TREASURE GOLEM's Stamina is 2
Bonnie Blood Attack Strength: 21, TREASURE GOLEM Attack Strength: 12. TREASURE GOLEM is dead.

The spell animating it broken, the Golem collapses into a heap of gold and jewels. The bone weapon served you well in your fight with Blackscar's cursed hoard and its edge was not dulled by the Golem's hard body, so you decide to keep hold of it. Whenever you use it against undead, spirits, or magical creatures, you may add 1 to your Attack Strength.

Leave the cave?
Take some of the treasure?

Also vote on which weapon to use as your default weapon; you can hold on to the other weapon since the gamebook doesn't say you can't.

Yeah, bone sword and leave. Even if the curse was it turns into a golem and attacks us, a magic sword is nice enough anyway.
