Ah syllogisms.
  • So you need to aggregate force values because otherwise your system will break down when army sizes double or quintuple.
  • You need to have differences in army composition matter, because otherwise what the fuck are we doing?
  • Adding large numbers of small numbers can give you the same aggregate result as adding small numbers of large numbers because that is how numbers work (see commutative property of multiplication).
As I see it, there are two main levers you can use:
  • Separate numbers that are relatively different. Elven Scouts have a high Skirmish and Patrol value for their cost, while Orcish Berserkers have a high Melee value for their cost.
  • High impact differential results from tactics and events. If you can impose the "choke point" condition, both sides subtract their total manpower from their force strength and elites crush mobs. On the flip side, if you can impose the "overrun" condition, both sides add their manpower to their force strength and mobs crush elites.
