No to both questions
- Unless I'm greatly mistaken 5 is the maximum you can get
- Storn always kills everybody and escapes with the artefact

So was there any difference who was actually carrying device, if Storn always gets away with it?

Yes, Valis was by far the best choice. If we carry it he knocks us from the back and finishes us with the staff unless we're very lucky, if he carries it he can choose his mount to blast everyone else and doesn't waste time making a rant.
