I'm still holding out that the end boss will have special rules for being shot up by silver bullets that make them useful despite the end boss' probably high SKILL.

Kill the toad with the Wulfen Sword, it won't even be able to touch us unless we get really bad RNG.

I second using the sword, even if the bullets aren't useful later, the worst that'll happen is some unnecessary sword fights with weak monster.

Use sword.

Also I'd suggest automatically ignoring bullets for all enemies that have an effective attack strength differential of 3 or more, don't have a nasty special attack (8+ STAMINA, 1+SKILL, hidden paragraph, plague etc) and 20 or less starting STAMINA

That would be pretty much everybody, I think. Our actual SKILL is 12 so we can't use the gun on anyone with higher than 11 SKILL......but our effective fighting SKILL is 14 most of the time due to our equipment bonuses, so the only situation where it'd be viable would be those special occasion where we have to fight with a penalty.

Anyway, I missed a picture in my last update....here's the toad and the crone:
Image
COMBAT LOG:
Giant Toad 9, Triple W 22. GT is at 5.
GT 15, Triple W 19. GT is at 3.
GT 11, Triple W 21. GT is at 1.
GT 16, Triple W 21. GT is killed.
Armed and with your ire up, you leap at the cantankerous old witch who shrieks while trying to strike you with her crackling wand.

CRONE SKILL 6 STAMINA 6

If the witch manages to hit you, by winning an Attack Round, roll one dice and consult the table below to see what damage it does.

Dice Roll Damage
1-2 Lose 2 STAMINA points.
3-4 Lose 3 STAMINA points.
5 Lose 2 STAMINA points and 1 SKILL point.
6 Lose 2 STAMINA points, 1 LUCK points and add 1 to your CHANGE score.

If you reduce the witch's STAMINA score to 2 points or less, turn to 359.
Well, she does have special abilities, but I'm not sure whether that falls under "nasty special attack" category that Mr Shine mentioned.

Use the sword again?

Sword it is!

COMBAT LOG:
Crone 7, Triple W 24. Crone is at 4.
Crone 14, Triple W 21. Crone is at 2.
The old woman suddenly drops to her knees crying. 'Spare me and I can help you defeat the lord of Castle Wulfen, the ultimate evil power in all of Lupravia. That is why you're here isn't it? Will you let the witch live, in the hope that she will prove true to her word or will you finish her now, while you have the chance?
Do we trust the witch?

I think I posted the Undertale "Mercy" button in a LP here before so I'm not doing it again.

Spare her.

'Tell me what you know,' you demand, your voice barely more than a growl.

'Count Varcolac was not always as he is now,' the crone explains. 'Once he was an ordinary mortal man but now he is something much greater, and much less. For all his strength and invulnerability there is one thing he fears, the touch of silver, and one weapon in particular - a consecrated Silver Dagger. So much so, in fact, that he has gone to great lengths to hide it within the castle, while also keeping it near him, for fear of anyone else chancing upon it and using its power against him.'

'Where can I find this dagger?' you demand.

'Not far from here,' the witch stammers, fearful before your bestial anger. 'Return to the main hall where you doubtless entered the castle and climb the stairs. Beyond the double doors you want the Map Room. In this room there is a secret door; the means of opening it is hidden within the picture of Castle Wulfen itself. Beyond this door lies the dagger's resting place. It is bound to be guarded but by what I do not know.' This is valuable information indeed. (Regain 1 LUCK point.) If you ever find yourself in the Map Room, to look for this secret door, deduct 50 from the paragraph you are on at the time and turn to this new reference. 'Now, leave me in peace!' the old crone snarls. Will you leave, as she demands, or finish her first, just to be sure?
LUCK is back to full.

Are we sure we want to spare her?

3 vs 2, Mercy wins over Bloodlust!
As soon as you turn your back on the old woman, and hear her muttering the words of another incantation, you realize that you should never have trusted a witch. Before you can you anything else to defend yourself, you feel the change you have been dreading come over you, freeing the wolf inside you from its fleshy prison. Howling in pain and frustration, your clothes and possessions falling from your new lupine form you run from the witch's kitchen on all fours, out of the castle and into then night, in search of a pack to call your own. Your adventure is over.
We didn't even eat that treacherous witch before we leave? What a wimpy werewolf we'd make!

That's twice.....Jonathan Green really wants to hammer home the "don't trust a witch you idiot!" message.

Rewinding to give the witch her just desserts......
An evil practitioner of the Black Arts lies dead at your feet: you were right not to trust this servant of the Dark Powers, for who knows what vile witchcraft she might have used on you, given the chance. (Restore 1 LUCK point.) There is little the crone has that you could possibly want, or use, but two things intrigue you: her book and the bubbling concoction steadily simmering on the hearth. The bubbling brew doesn't seem to smell quite so noxious anymore. Do you want to:

Look at the crone's book?
Sample some of the concoction she was busy brewing?
Leave the kitchen and take the other passageway leading from the entrance gall?
Leave and ascend the grand staircase to the double doors?
The brew doesn't smell quite as noxious now....I guess it was actually the witch's body odour.

Do we want to dabble in the Black Arts ourselves?

Yeah, play with the evil book.

(Why wouldn't she cast the werewolfing spell right away if it was that easy?)

If this was a more shitty book I'd just grin and bear it, but as is I have to call bullshit on that ending. If she was scared of us because we were an angry wolf man why would she make us even more of one? And why would that not immediately result in us eating her? I could've accepted a CHANGE score hit or something if she curses us but that's just stupid.

Anyhow, read the book.

Literally all results where she stabs us in the back for sparing her after giving us actually correct information instead of just using the time bought to curse us a bit harder are bullshit.

And yeah read the book.

The crone's Cook Book is in fact a book of spells. Most of the charms recorded on the crinkled parchment pages in a spidery hand are curses or simple hedge wizard's love spells. However, there is one that catches your eye, a Transformation Spell on page 79, a potent charm against skin-changers. Taking the crone's Cook Book with you, will you:

Sample some of the concoction she was busy brewing?
Leave the kitchen and take the other passageway leading from the entrance hall?
Leave and ascend the grand staircase to the double doors?
Is it too much to hope that we might get to use that hedge wizard's love spell on someone later?
Yes, it is.

There's actually an FF gamebook where the player gets the opportunity to use a love potion somewhere. Not this book though, sadly.
Shall we drink the yummy brew? If not, where do we go next?

I think she was probably making it for someone to drink. Half a vote to drink it.
