Nice review, AH. Do you think the book would have been better if it'd discarded the serious tone and went for comedic value instead?

You can do comedic Cthulhu roleplay. Pokethulhu is a thing that happened. It's not even the stupidest thing that's ever happened. But people will still want serious Cthulhu roleplay in Japan. Because Japan does have connections to the Mythos and the weird fiction canon. But it's not inhabited by a bunch of fucking lizard people hybrids.

The thing people tend not get with CoC is that you have to go beyond the source material. It's not enough to come up with some weird cosmic history and some freaky cults; you need to come up with goals and motivations and, ideally, a lot of that ancient history should be stuff that the players guess at. Terrible revelations work better when they creep up on you. Any player that reads any portion of this book is going to read about reptilians controlling the government, and that's terrible. Even the parts left up as an option to the Keeper are half-assed to an incredible degree.
