One by one, the barrel lids clatter to the boards. Only more salt fish, and no further rats.
The gaff hook is fastened to the spear and used to probe the box. You cannot get it very far in due to the curvature and crosshandle, but you can fit it in one eyehole and out the other, and feel around a little. There is neither resistance nor sound, no sign of anything in the box within the limited reach of your hook.
There is no sign of anything on the perch. As you enter the room, the dresser drawer slams shut with a BANG, apparently by itself. Willie cautiously approaches the dresser, and sees that someone has written 'lay my bones to rest' in the dust upon the mirror. Behind the dust, Willie sees some sort of motion reflected from the direction of the bed, as if the curtains were being parted.

"Dirk, watch out for anything that may come out of that mirror."
If anything threatens mirror Willie, "normal" Willie will attack the corresponding place in "normal" space. I.e. he will fight as if something was there.
If something physically (or otherwise) comes out of the mirror with hostile intentions, Willie will engage it.

The fish seems unpleasant, but unspoiled. A tiny nibble confirms that impression.

What has the head of a jungle king,
the body of a hill-climber,
the tail of a legless lizard, and
the breath of a winged hoarder?
The answer's in the box!

You stand for long moments, 'being ware,' but there are no further movements, from the mirror, the dresser or the bed-curtains. Long-honed adventuring instincts tell you that whatever may be in here is waiting for you to act.

"Sure." Sir Puppykicker says. "The question is, is it going to be you or me getting in that black doorway....." he grins and claps a hand over Dappa's shoulder to keep him from running. "...or perhaps him?"

"The lion is king of the jungle, a snake is a limbless lizard, don't know about the mountain climber or the bad breath but that says chimera to me."

Sir Puppykicker shrugs. "Whichever signal you think you'd be able to make in a hurry when there's trouble. It'd probably have to be something along the lines of giving a certain number of tugs on the rope, since I can't see a damn thing through this door, and we don't know if I'd be able to hear anything through it, either, not where magic is involved."

If you're not going to interact with the packing-case, the only obvious remaining objects of interest are the stacked smaller boxes on the other side of the hold.
You fasten the rope securely and agree on the standard 'two tugs' signal. Dirk tests the darkness with his spear, which shows no ill effects from passing through the darkness and back, then with a hand, and then finally plunges through himself.
Impossible as it might seem, you find yourself in a truly vast subterranean chamber, its ceiling so far above your head that it is hardly visible. Ahead of you lies dense purple shrubland. Beyond that, you can make out four mountainous pillars rising high into the sky.
Behind the bed-curtain is a skeleton (or rather, two skeletons), lying upon the bed. The first is that of a human, missing his right leg below the knee; the other is that of a bird, which lies by the first skeleton's shoulder. Both are connected to the bed by cobwebs, and very dusty.

Willie/Dirk V.
Dirk O.
Willie pries the drawer open a crack before it shuts itself again. Then the torture implements fly from the wall at both of you, bruising and nicking you before falling to the floor. Lose 1 STAMINA each. Finally, a single cutlass lifts off the wall and advances towards Willie, spinning aggressively.
The lurid purple plants are so thick that you would have to hack your way through. You could do it, but the rope is too short to allow much progress in any event.
"Yeah, that looks like a nope, at least without the rest of the party here."
Bajinga walks up to one of the smaller boxes and tries to lift or, failing that, drag it to the ladder, all the while not leting the chimera box out of sight. Then she opens it, using her knife to pry it open if necessary.
