I always liked Warcraft's use of dinosaurs (or the Kroot's use of dinosaurs, or the Dark Elves, to go to the Warhammer source). I don't think I've ever GMed a world where dinosaurs are extinct.

You typically get manticores by leaving a sheep unattended on the road for more than ten seconds, or by entering a castle attuned to the winds and then resting. Ten times out of nine, those fuckers will interrupt your sleep.

Pegasasu will visit beautiful dreams if my documentary* is anything to go by. This means you don't farm them or buy them, they just rock up when the right kind of person hits the right level.

Carrion Crawlers roam the oceans near Australia. I imagine the Kuo Toa farm them.

Chimerae are bred by mad wizards, so just look for a massive tower that looks like a penis, surrounded by a perpetual storm.

Dinosaurs? It's definitely yuan-ti that farm these things. And they will cut you an awesome deal for one.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

While it's true that Gith are known for having an understanding with Red Dragons, that's not terribly helpful as far as the heroic arc of any character. It means that one could potentially get a Red Dragon mount as high level Gith for no other reason than that you were one, and it means that the Gith could provide you with a Red Dragon mount as thanks for sacking an Ilithid city or something, that's all end game content. You could just as easily have a Dragon granted to you as a mount by Bahamut in thanks for whatever the fuck you just did, because by the time a Red Dragon is an appropriate mount, the regular opposition is world threatening dark lords.

Red Dragons are level appropriate mounts at some point, but that point is actually quite high level. Most games don't actually go that high, and a Red Dragon big enough for a medium sized character to ride around on would be an appropriate end game boss in most campaigns. In 3rd edition, a Red Dragon capable of flying with a Gith on its back has 19 hit dice. Obviously I think that Dragons should be bigger for the level they are, but the point is probably going to stand. No 6th level Gith is going to be getting a level appropriate Dragon Mount any time soon.

What this means is that Gith player characters need access to lower level things to ride around on. Like Invisible flying Rays or Displacer Beasts or something.

Some non-flying mount possibilities are actually quite badass. One could imagine Azurin riding on the backs of Purple Worms or Bugbears riding Dire Bears, for example. The old Spotted Unicorn shoots fucking prismatic spray out of its face. Certainly, if you're running around in the Stedding of the Hill Giant Warlord or something, and there's a damn roof over your head, a non-flying mount is not problematic in the slightest. It might even be necessary, as a Dire Bat or Pegasus likely flies faster than some of those hallways or rooms can accommodate (remember that Hill Giants are Giants, but only a bit more than like Adre the Giant. Cloud Giants, they are not). You could march around on the back of a Basilisk or Gorgon and do just fine.

However, there may be adventures where people have to have flying mounts. You could have to go to an adventuring locale on a cloud island, or just a regular island. Or beyond the mountains. Or on the other side of a really nasty thorn hedge, or whatever. The point is that if the party wants to go do things that require flying mounts, pretty much all the characters need flying mounts. Sure, there's no pressing need for a Dwarf army to have an air force, there is a need for Dwarf player characters to have access to flying mounts on short notice once they hit mid level.

Winged rhinos, and have the dwarf insist that his mount is an alicorn.

More seriously now, just give them dire bats. I remember Monstrous Manual having a species of giant bat that actually looked like a manta ray. These could be even more appropriate.

And your Dwarf player character is going to be traveling with a Human player character, an Elf player character, and a Halfling player character.

There's no real need for them to have racially specific flying mounts - they should all go buy Pegasi together. Or Griffons, or whatever.

There's a setting consideration where these types of mounts need to be more easily available. Next time I start a campaign, I'm definitley going to include a 'griffon stable' in a fairly large town that the party will know about from Level 1. Then when they get to 4th or 5th level, they can buy a griffon if that seems necessary.

But I can't think of any circumstances where the party would disband, each member would return to the Ancestral Lands of their people, request a flying mount from the Elders, then return to the party with their unique mount before beginning the flight-based adventure.

I think the idea is more like "okay, we need to get to the Sky Fortress, can we get flying mounts?" "Well, the gnome gyrocopters only support small people, we should go to the dwarves across the pass and see if we can buy some of their griffins."

Sure, you would buy your mounts from wherever you happen to be when you need them, but it makes the setting cooler if the elven tree village has different mounts for sale than the human city.

Gnomes don't necessarily have to be WoW or Dragonlance style tinkerers. Someone previously lamented the noisiness of giant insects, but that could tie into gnome illusionists using their magic to make dragonfly or wasp cavalry charges into a deafening laser show. And if you want a quieter option, there's always giant moths. Bonus points you could use some bullshit about trapping them with dancing lights.

This might actually be a useful design space in which to differentiate races. In our world, some peoples (Dakota, Mongol, Boer) were extremely fond of horses, and others (Tupi, Tibetan, Zulu) went around on foot. This is partly to do with their environment, as steppe peoples will naturally make more use of mounts than jungle or mountain folk. However it's also to do with development levels, since agricultural or nomadic civilisations will have mounts widely available to every commoner, while urban folk will tend to restrict them to the elites.

Now, adventurers will of course all ride, and that's only sensible: they need to travel and they need to fight. But in the same way that every fighter wears dwarf-made armour and every ranger wears an elven cloak, people are going to adopt the mounts of the race who are best at being mounted. Look at Arab racehorses and Spanish destriers: the wealthy people elsewhere in the world were generally pretty quick to recognise them and adopt them.

I think that even with the point that player characters will have more need for mid-level and flying mounts than npc armies that it would be good to have in setting racial preferences as just a bit of extra colour for the setting.

Dire Bears and such make a lot more sense in an earth-derived fantasy world if Dwarves have been breeding bears for tens of thousands of years. So just take all the dire animals from 3e as mounts for someone for a start.

And obviously the chimeras and owlbears and rubber dogs and other things that Wizards made were made for someone superheroic to ride to adventure on. And the horses that you get by bargaining with fiends, .... Oops, I think I just included the whole monster manual. Though a careful read through the Monstrous Manual might just find it's all in there somewhere anyway, everything is either a mount or rides one.

And here's another reason you can't play Centaurs, because what will they fly on? I mean, obviously than those epic airborne whales with the forest on top, but what about lower levels?

Mature Adult White Dragons are Huge and only CR 12. You could fill in the intervening levels with horseshoes of Air Walk, because part of the Centaur package is a big land speed.

Magic carpets.

And, yeah, if you're going to have monster race-specific mounts, they should make sense. If bears can be domesticated and can carry humans and orcs just as well as dwarves, you can bet that dwarves won't have the monopoly on bear mounts.

Wings of Flying appear to work regardless of your physiology.

The Xanth novel Isle of View features winged centaurs prominently on the cover. If I recall correctly, they were the result of a hippogriff and centaur mating.

If you like Lucky Star then I will explain in great detail why Lucky Star is the a shitty shitty anime for shitty shitty people, and how the characters have no interesting abilities at all, and everything is poorly designed especially the skill challenges.

The question of what Centaurs fly on is not specific to Centaur physiology it also applies just as well to Ogre or Giant PC's. Those would be rare enough that we could probably just find a couple huge CR 6 flying creatures to put in the world unconnected to any particular nationality. It is a good problem to solve though because I have seen many large sized PC's in my day and I don't think I've seen any of them who've managed to get a mount.

The issue with flying mounts for large characters is a tough one. While you can ride a beast that is one size bigger than you, it normally requires a critter two sizes bigger to fly with you on its back. Special rules exist for a couple of large flying creatures (pegasi and such), but normally a frost giant would need a gargantuan flier to get into the air.

Personally, I think that is not a good rule and should be removed - even if it does mean that halflings can ride medium sized giant bees. Also I think that D&D is way too stingy with handing out huge and gargantuan size (especially 3.5, where a bunch of big things were bumped down to large).

Giants ride Rocs.

Dwarves should not get a flying mount - Frank described at the front that mounts shape culture; not being airborne would tend to push them underground, where there's lots of stone over their head to negate other cultures' airborne advantage.

Maybe a burrower though. Giant Thoqqua?

Where does it say this rule? Because the Pegasus and Hippogriff are Large sized.

Also, the CRs for riding a Dragon become much more reasonable if they only have to be Larged sized for Medium characters:
`black 9
`blue 8
`green 8
`red 5
`white 8
`brass 10
`bronze 9
`copper 11
`gold 7
`silver 10

Land sharks are a pretty good mount for a large humanoid. Behir are centipede shaped, and are really more of a medium creature's mount.

Pretty much everything from monsters of faerun is unusable as is. But some of them are conceptually usable. I could imagine an elf riding a Peyton, for example.

"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

I'm sorry, my laptop fan died and bricked my computer. Until the new one arrives and I see if I can recover any of my writing projects from the hard drive, you'll be subjected to hilarious autocorrect errors from me.
