"If you're good Christians then even though you've left your own land, there's no reason that we can't be friends. My name is Stepan Mikhailovich Olenko; this is my brother Grigory and my sons Ihor and Ilya. We farm the land south of the village, by the pond, and we have the house with the red roof on top of the hill." He gestures back to the village; you can see it a few miles off, with the largest and wealthiest houses standing prominently on the brow of the hill by the kremlin. "This is Ubor Vyhorsky, the horse breeder, and this is Samuel Karylenko, who is a Jew but a splendid fellow nonetheless." Olenko illustrates this with a slap to his back; Karylenko, an iron-hard man in his early fifties with skin like leather, grimaces with amusement.

"Tell me, you don't appear to brought have any herds. How do you plan to survive? Did you come heavily supplied with seed grain?"

Olenko winces and spits at the steward's response as to diabolists. "Here we call them kresniky, and when we find them they do not live long. Even the nightwalkers and village sorcerors shun them, and when we have sniffed out a kresnik then we seek out the aid of the volkhvy. These last years the kresniks have chased out the volkhvy, and while I hope they return with greater numbers I fear they may not. In such times men look to their own council."

"I am Iosif. Some of our party are on their way to Kyiv to bring some grain and animals, but they will not be able to bring that much. Perhaps we could come to some kind of arrangment. The stone building you see behind you was raised out of the ground in a matter of minutes, and we would happily do the same for your village. One of our party is very skilled with animal magic, and they will do wonders for your herds. One of us is a blacksmith who will make you all swords fit for Princes, and another is a brewer who will make you the most delicious beer you have ever drank. In return, any food or animals you could spare would be most welcome, and any of your tribe who would wish to farm this valley would be welcome to. Once we are established, as well, perhaps our wizards could turn their attention to these kresniky. We were attacked by a pack of wolves on our way here, and I saw with my own eyes how powerful their magics were."

Olenko nods. "That's pretty impressive magic. There's a man in Boromyla who can turn into a great white stag and ensure that the hunting is good. We used to have a nightwalker who could ensure good harvests and keep the spring frosts away from the orchards. I'm sure your magicians can make useful things for trade."

He pauses as Vyhorsky taps him on the arm, looks back at him, and after a flurry of Ruthenian too fast to follow, he resumes speaking Bulgarian. "My friend reminds me that the prince's law threatens us with confiscation if we sell our animals or produce anywhere but at a market he's authorised. The nearest one is at Boromyla, a day away. But I understand that you said you intended to hold a market? This would be very much relevant to our interests."

"We were going to wait until we had become established, but I believe we can hold one sooner. I will confer with our magi and decide when to schedule a market, but I am sure the Prince will not mind if we trade before we properly establish it. How many of the nearby villages would attend such a market?"

He shrugs. "People will not come as villages, they will come as families. Once it is established, traders may come up from Kiev as they do to Boromyla market. Perhaps the Cumans will come too - if what you say about your blacksmith is true, they will buy his wares in abundance. They have a hunger for metal and their herds are fine, although naturally not so fine as ours."

"Of course. Provisionally, let us schedule the first market for the next full moon. In the meantime, if you could tell any merchants that we exist and would happily buy their wares, it would be appreciated."

Unnamed Covenant. 26 March. Spring.

Olenko turns his horse. "At the full moon, then. Until then, may you keep well." He kicks his heels and rides off with his brother and sons.

Karylenko lingers a little longer, waiting until Olenko has ridden out of earshot before speaking. "Stepan Mikhailovich is a good man but a proud one, and will not ask for help. The truth is that we need it. It is not just the kresniks which afflict us. Something has caused the hearth fae of the land to turn against us instead of helping us like once they did. They frighten the animals and spoil the stored grain, and this has caused great hardship over the winter. We would normally ask the volkhvy for help, but the kresniks have driven them off. If you could aid us in this, I am sure we would flourish together."

Kiev. 6 April. Spring.

The great city of Kiev sits on the hills above the Dniepr, its cathedral and palaces dominating the view for miles around. Each of the three great gates opens onto its own market square, where traders come to exchange their wares. Every compass point of humanity seems to pour into this city: from the north come Russians and Lithuanians, from the east Alans and Cumans, from the west Germans, Hungarians and Poles, and from the south Jews and Greeks. Here and there one finds even stranger folk: Vikings, Italians, Arabs, Czechs, Franks, Armenians and Turks. The hubbub is incredible: some find it overwhelming, others find it intoxicating.

Many people here sell the goods the covenant needs. From Greek merchants the covenfolk buy glassware and finely-made tools for the labs. From Jewish merchants the covenfolk buy huge sacks of Egyptian grain to feed the covenant, bales of Syrian cotton to clothe it, and ink for the magi's books. From Varangian merchants they buy wool and seasoned timber, goods the covenant will need until they start to produce their own. Further investigation into the markets might yield some more unusual goods.

Here and there, there are people who might be persuaded to come and join the covenant: desperate runaways, footloose mercenaries, or families looking for a home. If the covenfolk want to look into this, they might be able to find some interesting people.
If anyone wants to characterise a grog and make a Bargain roll for them, they can investigate unusual goods or try to get a better deal on the covenant staples. Likewise, if they want to go recruiting then they can make Folk Ken rolls.

EDIT: Each grog may only do one of these two things.

For every teamster or escorting soldier, I'd like either a Carouse roll or a roll on a Temperate or Pious personality trait if they have those traits. If players would like to characterise grogs and make the rolls for them, please do so; otherwise I'll apply a statistical spread.

Ease Factors are:
12+ for the Bargain roll to get a better deal
15+ for the Bargain roll to find unusual goods
12+ for the Folk Ken roll to recruit new people
9+ for the Carouse roll
9+ for the personality trait roll if avoiding Carouse.

The Unnamed Covenant. 26 March 1220. Spring. (Morning)
Nidratr sits up from where they have leaned over the table listening, ears twitching and, if anyone had the line of sight to see it, or knowledge of body language, rolling his eyes, "Camille, Petrus, let me be frank, I may be good with creation and destruction of organic forms, but I'm a novice compared to the two of you when it comes to vis and organization. I have no head, at the moment, for this discussion of who should own what. In the north, a man owns what he makes, and if the village has need of it, someone asks him, and possibly offers an arrangement. If some cur refuses the village use of his resources in a time of great need, the jarl may cuff him upside the head and take what is needed, but only when the man is a true and utter jackass who is risking the safety or survival of the village by refusing. Essentially, I'm trusting you two to not screw us all. And honestly, I do trust you two to not do that."

They crane their neck to look through a window and eye the position of the sun in the sky, "it would seem we've come to some arrangement, and I believe we can always reconvene to argue about things from a stance of experience and knowledge, rather than speculation, later. Not that that is ideal, but that's about the only point when I'll be able to have much input, short of me running and pouring over tomes and notes right this instant. All I will say, is that the wolf of virtue should... not have a say, as such, but their perspective should be listened to on matters that will affect him. Animals, especially magical animals, can have valid insight on matters of food or defense. Especially once they've gotten used to the idea that they are not spending every minute of every day scraping a survival out the earth."
Korgan0 wrote:The Unnamed Covenant. 26 March 1220. Spring.

"We come from many far-away lands, but we are, one and all, Christians, and we have kin from all Christendom.
Nidratr stifles a smirk, but spares a very understanding glance for Karylenko.

I'll probably step into the role of one of Nidratr's shield maidens, but that will be this afternoon, since I need to go bug a manager soon

The Unnamed Covenant. 26 March 1220. Spring. (Morning)

I thank you for your trust, Nidratr. To be perfectly frank, the Wolf is, well, exactly who I had in mind when I thought up this position of Trusted Friend.

The Unnamed Covenant. 26 March 1220. Spring. (Afternoon)

Petrus, having cast Whispering Winds successfully, listened to the conversation between the steward and the others. He will track down the rest of the covenant and the steward, and call yet another impromptu meeting, in which he will relay what was said, with the steward's input. "Well, it seems we have some direction. Once we get our labs set up, I can spend a season extracting vis, which should give us enough to set up an Aegis for the first year. I have four pawns of Vim vis on me, and should be able to obtain three to four pawns of Vim vis in a season, which in turn should bring us up to the amount required for the Aegis ritual I learnt. Given that the only magicians in area will either be hostile to us or the recipient of a magical attack on our end, having our Aegis up and covering this mound will be of crucial importance. I am assuming here that we intend to strike these diabolists, as I have no intent of letting them live, and I believe that doing otherwise will jeopardize our relationship with the locals, be in direct violation of the Code, and be hazardous to our health. In, um, addition, perhaps it would be wise to make sure conditions are in order for this market we will hold, although I am not sure what that would entail. Are there any suggestions as for how to make this a possibility? Perhaps setting an area aside, or spreading the word, or some such? Alas, this lies outside of my area of expertise."

Sitting up from his place on the stone floor Orsen adds his thoughts, "Though I care nothing for your prattle on the distribution of vis. I'm disturbed at all the hate you seem to be throwing the wolf's way. Petrus seems to only want members to vote on subjects with which they have experience. Have any of us had experience with running a covenant in the past? At least the Wolf of Virtue has lead a group of wolves for, what it seems, a long time.

I definitely think there should be representatives for the non-magical covenfolk as well. I know there isn't much for them if they flee. May as well give them a nice life. For those who care more for their magical pursuits, high morale is essential for efficiency."

There is a knock on the door; one of the covenfolk puts their head in.

"Begging your pardon, sirs," she says in Norman-accented French, "but there's a wolf outside. It says... " she gulps, "it says it's here to represent the interests of its constituents on the council. Whatever that means. I don't hold with talking wolves, sirs, but if it's indeed a friend of yours then it isn't my place to question."

Vergil responds in equally accented French, "Send him in. A talking wolf is something not even most maga see every day." He nods to Orsen, "We have reason to hear what it has to say."

Nidratr rights their chair and sits back down, "I greatly approve, it's a good thing for the wolf to volunteer for that. Who better to speak to those whose voice might be overlooked, than a talking member of a species which usually has no voice?"

The servant stands back worriedly as the Wolf of Virtue saunters in, lickings its chops. It somewhat awkwardly takes a seat, curling up on it and putting its head on the table.

"You are discussing important governance matters yes? Good. I have arrived so now we can discuss. What is issue-of-day?"

Being as he says it in Russian, only Orsen can follow the words but the message is pretty obvious. When the point is explained to him he shakes his head sagely and casts his vote along with Petrus, not wanting resources to be automatically pooled. It is, however, in favour of the notion of a rotating Treasurer to manage those resources which are shared.

Again, there is a knock on the door, and a terrified servant enters with a bowl of diced raw mutton, placing it on the table and running away. The Wolf looks at it, then at the rest of the council, then begins to gnaw at it while listening to the discussion.[/i]

Theodricus:
-Bargain 1d10 +5(Bargain) = 5 (no botch)

Kiev. 6 April. Spring.

The Byzantine trader laughs at Theodricus's attempts to bargain for better prices on glassware. "So you serve wizards, do you? We Romans have wizards who wouldn't even piss in this stuff you think is so fine, and who wouldn't blink at the cost. You can pay the same price as everyone else."

That evening, Theodricus is faced with the peculiar situation of being a young man adrift in a major city with money in his pocket and nobody telling him what to do with it. As a result, he wakes up the next morning with a throbbing hangover and an empty pocket. The tavern keeper - a gruff but kind elderly Varangian - nurses him back to a semblance of sobriety and sends him out to rejoin the other grogs.

There are some memories floating in his head of conversations he had last night. A scarred sailor spoke about a dragon that's been ravaging the sea lanes around Kaffa, which spared a particular ship because a scholar was onboard who could speak knowledgeably on geometry, a subject which delighted the dragon. A Cuman traveller told a story of a place not far away where the rocks cling to steel as though magically enchanted. A Lithuanian mercenary held forth on a war brewing between the princes of Rus' which would surely enrich the slave traders and lead to great destruction in the countryside. Or maybe it was the Cuman who told about that and a Bulgarian told the tale of the magic rocks? And where were they exactly? He can't remember, and the more he tries to remember the more the memories become merged and muddied and indistinct.

"Orsen, could you translate? Lupus, the position of treasurer would only deal with magical substances, which we call vis, and which can be used for various magical rituals. I argue that, given how highly magi prize vis, perhaps as wolves prize the choicest piece of a carcass, giving one person control of such a precious resource could very easily lead to an unequal distribution of the vis. Mundane resources are under the control of the steward, subject to broad direction by the council as a whole."

The Unnamed Covenant. 26 March 1220. Spring. (Morning)

The Wolf of Virtue looks at Petrus in a patronising way. Until this moment it probably didn't even occur to him that wolves could look patronising, but this one manages. "The first share of the kill goes to the highest in station. That's only right and proper. Only dogs fight over scraps, and to divide it equally is... " the Wolf shudders, "is fitting only for herbivores." He tucks into the plate of raw diced herbivore in front of him to make his position on them clear.

The Unnamed Covenant. 28 March 1220. Spring.

On the third day of spring, the covenant wakes to discover that there are small white flowers growing all over the summit of the mound. Or rather, over three quarters of the summit: one of the oxen has already grazed its way across them industriously, hungry for fresh fodder after four months of hay.

Examination via Intellego Vim spontaneous magic reveals that these flowers each contain a minute quantity of vis; between them there is about three pawns of Herbam. This will need to be stored in the form of approximately a cubic metre of little white flowers until someone gets a lab built and can distill them into a more convenient powder or liquid.

Nidratr will set to work casting an ReAn effect with Circle range/Ring duration to keep animals away from the flowers after persuading the ox to leave the flowers alone with another ReAn effect.

(getting ready to bug business people, will do calculations later, unless someone wants to do them for me)

ReAn Sun Dur, Target 1, to persuade ox to not eat the white flowers
1d10+12*=20+2**=22/2=11

*aura modifiers unknown
**forgot the loud and showy modifiers on the roll

Ox is persuaded.

ReAn to ward animals from flowers
Target- Circle, Dur- Ring, Range- Touch?
1d10+14***=18/2=9

Mag 7 ward created. I think?

***still don't know about aura, but did remember the loud and showy mods.

"Then we are herbivores, I suppose. Strange herbivores, but powerful ones. Surely you have faced a great bull aurochs, hmm?"

Petrus will violently shoo away the oxen, trusting in his Gift. If that fails, he will round up the covenfolk, and commission them to pick and store the flowers.

The Unnamed Covenant. 26 March 1220. Spring. (Morning)

The Wolf chokes a little, unused to the concept of the word "herbivore" not used as a pejorative. When he recovers it's evident that he has nothing but contempt for Petrus. "I have seen wild aurochs. They have bull. Others obey bull. My pack obeys me. When fighting comes I command pack and he commands herd. For this he receives best mates and best grazing. In harsh winter he chooses who must die to save food. Even herbivores understand leadership."

It considers a little. "I move - move is right word yes? - that if covenant is going to be herbivore then matter is settled. Camille has approval. Unanimous approval even, whatever 'unanimous' mean. I move also that Orsen be Treasurer because he can beat me up and I can beat any of the rest of you up. Is good system of leadership yes?"

The Unnamed Covenant. 28 March 1220. Spring.

The ox is persuaded to back away; Petrus panics the rest of the animals into bolting, for which he receives dirty looks from the covenfolk. The flowers appear to have grown onto a ground-hugging vine of sorts which has appeared overnight. They're small and star shaped and don't appear to be any species that anyone recognises.

Nidratr traces circles around the patches of flowers, protecting them from the depredations of grazing animals.
The Aura is 3 up here on the mound.

An Int + Magic Lore roll of 9+, speciality in Auras applying, can tell you that this sort of thing is fairly typical of how vis manifests. Auras which produce vis do so at regular times or in response to events, and successfully harvesting that vis requires you to turn up at the right time and take away the physical form of the vis before something happens to it - for example, an ox eating it.

The summit of the mound is large, about 50m radius. As such a single colossal circle would be very difficult to draw - it would require thirty successful concentration checks in a row. I'm assuming that Nidratr is putting the circles around the dense patches of flowers rather than trying for a single circle.
