(Warning: spoilered image is fucking huge. It's the cover art to the original UK cover of the Forest of Doom; mine is the US version.)

As you start to speak the Goblin looks up and smiles. Then he starts to metamorphose before your eyes. He becomes taller and turns green. A large spiny tail extends from his baack, his arms thicken and his hands grow sharp claws. His face distorts and becomes reptilian with red eyes, a wide mouth and dozens of razor-sharp teeth. He is not a Goblin but a SHAPE CHANGER, and you must fight him.

SHAPE CHANGER SKILL 10 STAMINA 10

Combat Log:
SC 13, Dick 15. SC is at 8. Luck Test: auto-success. SC is at 6.
SC 20, Dick 15. Dick is at 16.
SC 16, Dick 12. Dick is at 14.
SC 13, Dick 15. SC is at 4. Luck Test: 4,5=Lucky. SC is at 2.
SC 16, Dick 13. Dick is at 12.
SC 16, Dick 16. Tie.
SC 17, Dick 11. Dick is at 10.
SC 17, Dick 17. Tie.
SC 17, Dick 17. Tie.
SC 14, Dick 15. SC is dead.
(Damn, that guy fucked up our shit bad, even with some good LUCK tests tossed in our favor. Do we want to eat any Provisions? One meal gets us up to 14 again and 2 restores us to full. It seems a little early to chug the Luck Potion but we could do that too.)

You slump on to the log exhausted after your long battle. Sadly, the black rod was just part of the Shape Changer's illusion and it exists no more. However, you notice some violet mushrooms growing behind the log. They are unfamiliar to you but look tasty.

(Meal eaten, with a side of mushrooms.)

On eating some of the mushrooms you feel a great turmoil inside your body. You think you might be turning into a Shape Changer! At last you are relieved to feel the turmoil dying down - and you have not become a Shape Changer. But you have eaten Mix-Up Mushrooms - your SKILL score now becomes your LUCK score and your LUCK score becomes your SKILL score. Feeling a little odd you set off north again.

(We've been turned into a frog before, but we're not being turned into a Shape Changer. It's kind of a shame, since the dude on the UK cover is totally badass looking. Anyways, eating the mushrooms here probably is a good tradeoff because of our Potion of Fortune.)

The path continues north and you soon reach another junction.

North is the way to Stonebridge. I'd say we want to try to avoid any path that gets there quicker until we have the hammer.

Walking east you come across a branch in the path heading south. You decide to ignore it and continue east.

The path continues east for some distance and then turns sharply north, narrowing slightly. The trees seem to crowd in on the path even more than usual and a tingling down your spine tells you something is not right. Suddenly a branch from one of the trees to your right whips out and knocks you to the ground. Lose 1 STAMINA Point. You stagger to your feet to see that the tree has moved on to the path, blocking your way. The tree is old, with thick, cracked bark. You can just make out its hidden eyes and mouth in the middle of its trunk and realize you have been attacked by a TREEMAN. You may:

Escape by running back to the junction
Fight the Treeman

(At least this guy isn't a Sword Tree. Oddly enough, since the combat music hasn't actually started yet, we can technically cram some more food in our mouth before fighting.)

In the other book, Fire just gave you a modest bonus in combat versus plants and was thus way worse than just taking your lumps and healing afterwards. Stab this foolio.

It's a tree. I don't think just choosing to fight it will be an autodeath (it might be nigh immortal though. But stabbity stab stab.)

The Treeman lumbers slowly towards you on large, splayed roots. (Dick does not have Fire Capsules.)

The Treeman lashes out at you with two of its main branches and you leap into the attack.

TREEMAN SKILL 8 STAMINA 8

You must defeat the Treeman twice, once for each main branch, before it will die. You may Escape during battle by running back to the junction in the path.

(We didn't run before, so I doubt we'll run now.)

Combat Log:
Treeman 14, Dick 15. Treeman is at 6.
Treeman 15, Dick 21. Treeman is at 4.
Treeman 13, Dick 18. Treeman is at 2.
Treeman 18, Dick 22. Treeman is dead.
Round 2:
Treeman 17, Dick 18. Treeman is at 6.
Treeman 13, Dick 14. Treeman is at 4.
Treeman 18, Dick 17. Dick is at 15.
Treeman 15, Dick 16. Treeman is at 2.
Treeman 19, Dick 18. Dick is at 13.
Treeman 16, Dick 21. Treeman is dead.
(Round 1 is a Flawless but the Treeman gets in some Dick punches in Round 2.)

Wiping the thick green sap-blood from your sword you set off north again. You are relieved to see that the trees are at last beginning to thin out and appear less threatening.

Daylight appears through the trees on either side of the path as the forest thins out more. Soon the path leads out of the trees on to a large plain with tall grasses. Beyond you see rising ground leading to low hills. A new branch off the path leads east. Continuing your quest you may:

Keep on walking north
Go east

You arrive at a four-way junction in the path. South leads back to the forest so you discount that option.

The path ends at a junction. The way south leads back to the forest so you decide to head north.

As you walk along the path through the waist-high grasses you watch the grass rippling in the wind. Soon you get the uncomfortable feeling that the
grass has a will of its own and is moving independently of the wind. Suddenly a clump of grass stretches out across the path and wraps itself around your ankle. Other clumps of grass try to grab your arms and legs. You realize that you are surrounded by TANGLEWEED. (Dick does not have a Potion of Plant Control)

Despite your struggles the Tangleweed manages to grab your limbs and drag you to the ground. You see the grass begin to curl itself round your neck and tighten its grip. You choke and try to cough. But then you realize that the Tangleweed is not trying to strangle you—it is just trying to make as much contact as it can with your exposed flesh so that it can suck your blood! With horror, you see hundreds of tiny blood-ringed punctures on your arms and legs. Finally the weed, having drunk enough, releases its grip. Lose 3 STAMINA points. If you are still alive, you rise to your feet and stand shakily rubbing your wounds. Relieved to be alive, you start walking north again.

(Well, it's Scorpion Swamp's Crab Grass meets Beneath Nightmare Castle's Kiss of Death Protoplasm. But it lacks the multiple ways of bypassing it of the former and also lacks the descriptiveness and interesting trigger method of the latter, although in all fairness it predates both. We're at 10 STAMINA again, do we want to eat?)

As the path proceeds northwards, the grass becomes shorter and the ground starts to rise gently. Ahead you can hear the sound of flowing water. You soon reach the bank of a gently flowing river. There is no bridge but you see that the path continues north on the other side of the river. Standing proudly in front of you is a magnificent white beast, half-man, half-horse, A bow and a quiver of arrows are slung behind his back. He is a CENTAUR. Will you:

Try to start a conversation with him?
Walk around him and wade into the river?
Draw your sword and attack him?
