It was just...a barrel. It would go up and down based on various inputs. You had to make it go down really really far in order to get past it.

Normally the way you'd make stuff like that move in the Sonic games, and in Sonic 3 up to that point, was to jump on it. So you'd jump, and jump, and jump...and never push the barrel down far enough to get to the passage underneath it.

But it turns out, for this puzzle, you simply had to make Sonic look up and down (using the D-pad) and that would cause the barrel to move. Nevermind that this mechanic had not been used at all in Sonic 3 up to this point (and the game was at least 2/3rds of the way over by now), nor was it ever used after that point, nor was there any indication that this was what you even had to do.

I sort of beat that by being a kid. And pressing up on the D-pad because I thought it'd make him jump higher. And down for...whatever reason.

Ahhhh. Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I spent so many fucking hours on Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and S3&K. I got all the Chaos Emeralds on the latter two (all fourteen of them in the full S3&K), beat it with all the characters.

Good times. Nostalgia trip.

And the special stages are hardcoded into my fingers. I play them a bit, and they all start coming back to me.

Hmm, I probably should have posted news of my victory in MK II here and not in the Video Games thread a few days ago:
Darth Rabbitt wrote:I actually beat Mortal Kombat 2 without cheats!

(See Shrapnel's "games that were designed to cause pain" thread for more from me on MK II's difficulty, which inspired me to try the game out again.)

I have to thank you, shau, for the advice with Baraka; his blade spinning attack does out-prioritize Kintaro's stomp (but not his throws.)

Shao Kahn is actually a huge wimp in this game; I lost the first round to him (the first round I've ever fought him without cheating, since Kintaro is so damn hard) and then fucking destroyed him in the next two.

ALL HAIL KING BARAKA

I almost have the nostalgia in me to buy Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition.
Except if it's still "-> <- -> LK HP" and "Hold LP for five seconds" for moves rather than simple QCF+Punch, then it'll be a pain to get used to. And the lack of controller for PC. And I imagine it's not actually that much fun.
