Let's have a Touhou thread. What's the worst that could happen?

All that I know about touhou I've learned from I Wanna Be the Guy fangames. This amounts to: touhou characters shoot cherries, they are accompanied by music, they are fearsome foes.

The most I know about touhou is that the series has some really great music. I have a few of the soundtracks in my library.

It's a series of Bullet Hell (see: Raiden) games, with a cult following. As is often the case, the intensity of the fans makes it seem more widespread than it actually is. The games are Nintendo Hard (relying on reflexes and pattern recognition/memorisation, as well as general awareness of everything that is happening around you), with good music and a silly. funny story line to them. The characters are both over the top and cute.

They also have many Flash games, the majority of which are not Bullet Hell. Examples I can think of:
[*]Suppository Sniper (yes, you have to shoot suppositories up their asses)
[*]Doors-and-trampolines (enemy avoider + item collector)
[*]CIRNO MATH CHALLENGE! (you need to pick the wrong answer, unless the correct answer is nine)
[*]Pattern-trace/mouse-flick "get your damage on one attack as high as possible"
[*]Balance the gems on the wings

There are also short anime clips (fan-made) and AMVs, as well as a huge amount of fan-manga and 4-panel comics. Also, there's a Flash "game" that basically acts as a template system to make your own comics of them.

Also, there's touhou fanart for any situation, no matter how convoluted. It's like a specialised version of rule 34.

All the 4e you'll ever want to see, often lacking errata. Would actually be handy for 3e spells and conditions and so on, but I suppose all the Touhoufags Touhou fans play 4e D&D, and love it. Plus, they'd do it for Pathfinder, so never mind.

I'd like to emphasize how good Touhou's music is. Touhou's music is so popular that ZUN, the creator of Touhou, is credited as composer on at least 4400 albums. I'm not making that up to impress you, that's the actual number. And it's rising. Some albums are amateurish and terrible, of course, but a surprising number are seriously awesome. As much as I like just about everything Touhou, I still spend more time listening to arrangements than anything.

As an introduction to the actual games, I recommend Imperishable Night; it's relatively easy, and has lots of playable characters and features. Or, if you like fighting games, try Scarlet Weather Rhapsody--it's like Street Fighter with girls and lasers.

I was wondering when a thread like this would pop up.

I don't even understand the 4400 albums thing. I mean, I've written and recorded an album in a month's time, and it was okay. I could churn out a shitty album in less than a day if I felt like it. Even aleatoric music takes time to render and arrange.

After a cursory glance, I see a bunch of compilations, so that makes a little more sense. But still, even 95% of those credits were just comps/remixes/reissues, that's still what we in the biz like to call "a living fucktonne of albums."

Most of those are done by fans - ZUN has a very generous policy regarding derivative works and doesn't mind people selling them for money.

From that link, his actual discography is 30 titles - which is still very good, especially when you consider that he composes, programs, draws and writes all his games solo and has a full time job. I assume - it might be much simpler than it sounds in my head.

There's a thriving doujin market - similar range of amateurish to amazing - and quite a few games that go beyond just flash stuff... Touhouvania, Touhoumon, Touhou Mother (Earthbound crossover), at least four top-down RPGs, a dozen puzzle games, Touhou Soccer, MegaMari (Mario Bros), a 3D dogfighter, one pretty solid 3D platformer where you run around as Youmu and cut up everything...

Just about the only thing he's not keen on are anime adaptations because they'd take attention away from the actual games and music, as well as make him clear up the deliberately vague plotlines and multiple endings.

As I was just giving another friend a guide to the music last week, here's the generic links I gave him - they've a diverse collection of quality arrangements - the originals are certainly worth checking out as well:

So, how excited is the Den about Reitaisai 10 this weekend? Nitori and Koishi for the fighting game came were completely unexpected, and for the regular danmaku game, Sakuya makes her comeback!

I should stop playing roguelikes and try to win UFO on normal. Fuck Shou.

EDIT: speling

Fightan gaems... eh. But I'm all over Double Dealing Character. Also, a lot of interesting albums have been announced. In particular I'm looking forward to The Flames Of The Inferno; I haven't liked CROW'SCLAW's last few releases, but I think this might make up for them.

I've beaten it, but I have no suggestions for Shou. Shou is a real fucker.

Lately I've been trying to earn my first Lunatic 1cc, on EoSD. Every time I start the game I'm SO SURE I'll get it, but I always lose my nerve and start making mistakes around Koakuma.

Yeah, this is just making me want to dig out Hypercanvas and record an album. Which I do NOT have time for. :)

Was listening to this when I notice something strange in the recommended videos. Also sorts of Cirno and touhou stuff... and then a video for an A-10 Warthog strafing run. I... guess they're both sorta related... I mean, they both make bullet hells.

Also, these songs are pretty good:

About DDC, Kagerou has some nasty spellcards. Yuugi is the other lvl 3 boss I remember that forces you to leave the bottom of the screen, but Knock Out in Three Steps is just memorization. Kagerou's last card... *shudders*

EDIT: Lets be earnest about writing the correct spellcard names!

DDC is a good "turnaround" of events: finally the "Holy War" has ended and new phenomena start happening! And Sekibanki looks like a good doujin material, with a good amount of hidden power and funny stories about Yukkuri heads; and a new favorite, for me, at least.

Ichirin's last two cards also force you to leave the bottom, and they might even be harder. Not to say Kagerou isn't damned hard, of course.

Except for most of Sekibanki's patterns (Flying Head, especially, is boring) and the seriously fucked bombs, I'm digging DDC. I really want to know how the corrupted and uncorrupted storylines differ.

With Marisa, you live fast and die young.

And sorry for not remembering Ichirin. I keep trying to forget UFO, for reasons.

All I know about Touhou is:

1.) Touhou pornography is the standard punishment for trying to download TTRPG books that aren't actually released yet.

2.) Touhou is the second-most common thing in Mario romhacks or fangames, next to actual Mario critters.
Josh Kablack wrote:Your freedom to make rulings up on the fly is in direct conflict with my freedom to interact with an internally consistent narrative. Your freedom to add and change rules in the middle of the game is in direct conflict with my ability to understand that rules system before I decided whether or not to join your game.

In short, your entire post is dismissive of not merely my intelligence, but my agency. And I don't mean agency as a player within one of your games, I mean my agency as a person. You do not want me to be informed when I make the fundamental decisions of deciding whether to join your game or buying your rules system.

1.) In particular, the punishment used to be Touhou futa porn. Not Futo porn, sadly.

2.) Touhou is an absolute juggernaut among japanese geeks. Maybe because ZUN has a strong indie ethic, encouraging fan-works and refusing to cash in and go fully commercial.
