Freeware PC Games

Post by Avoraciopoctules »

I spend a lot of time following indie gaming news and kickstarters, and I figured I'd make a thread for any stuff worth recommending now that we have a videogame board.

To start off, check this out: http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php
Iji is an excellent platformer-RPG-shooter with good replay value.

This is what I'm currently playing: http://indiegames.com/2013/04/freeware_ ... se_as.html
Being the Final Fantasy boss who throws waves of slowly-harder monsters at the hero to level them up so they can save the world sounds kinda funny.
EDIT: Now that I've finished it, As Was Foretold wasn't really all that great.

Cave Story was recently remastered, retranslated, and rereleased for a few consoles and on Steam, but the original game and associated fan translation are highly recommended and still available: http://www.cavestory.org/

I got Cave Story Plus in an indie bundle. It had a fun bonus level and some silly seasonal sprite swaps, but it isn't really worth getting over the original for more than a couple bucks.

Some fairly cool stuff here. Out of the games in the current bundle, Wesnoth is cool (and has ridiculous amounts of fan content / mods), and the smash bros demake is surprisingly fun. I've played it with my friends a few times.

Podunkian's made some neat stuff.

The Underside's demo is a great Cave Story clone, and I laughed at the MGS parody stuff.

I played the non-flash version of Tower of Heaven, and it was a really clever high-lethality platformer that didn't last long enough to outstay its welcome.

Tower of Heaven is awesome. Incredibly challenging, but you know what you have to do.

An Untitled Story is an excellent choice if you like sidescrolling platformers, exploration, and upgrading capabilities as you go. Cute, but it gets really hard later on. I really enjoyed it.

Castlevania clone, but think the really early Castlevanias. I haven't finished this one, but I also have a lot of fun with it. Some cool boss fights.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Hmm. That new game they kickstarted looks like it might be pretty good.

Here's another graphical adventure game: http://crystalshard.net/atotk.php

It's sitting at version 1.something right now. When I stopped playing (about Freshman year), it was at 0.99c or 0.99d I think.

EDIT: To clarify, I stopped playing it around freshman year, but I got back into it this semester (and have subsequently failed to find the right combination of time and motivation to play though it again, so I'll probably drop it again)

Eversion is a short but sweet retro style platformer.

I'll also link Digital: A Love Story, which is also a stylish little adventure.

I played the sequel and it was pretty cool, but I never actually tried Digital. Maybe I should finally give it a shot.

A few come to mind:

The Ur-Quan Masters, a port/remake of Star Control 2, a wonderful Sci-fi RPG/exploration/action game in the vein of the venerable Starflight.

Tales of Game's offerings, particularly Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, a Final Fantasy-style JRPG about Charles Barkley. Surreal and very funny, and something of a send-up of the JRPG genre and it's more rabid fans. Also notable is The Sewer Goblet, a Wu-Tang Clan themed roguelike.

Privateer Gemini Gold, a remake of Wing Commander: Privateer, a RPG/space-dogfighting game.

Barkley's pretty rad. I'm looking forward to when the sequel gets finished, though that's gonna be a commercial game. Maybe there will be a demo.

Barkley 1 is free, already out, and has at least one good LP available.

Barkley 2 should be available to buy next year, or December of this one if we are lucky.

If you like hard shmups, try hydorah. It's really good.

Both are fun little arcade games. I love luftrauser, and look forward to the commercial sequel.

I wanna be the guy! Entertaining masocore retro platforming. Made because Cat Mario was too easy.
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

I wanna be the Boshy! made because I wanna be the Guy was too easy. Twitch streamer Kalemandu currently has the world record, and still tries to beat his best several times weekly.

Additionally, there are tons of other IWBTG fan games, most of dubious quality, some occasionally good.
