I think he does a remarkable job, considering that he's seventeen.

What irritates me is that he got the job. I'm sick of seeing Martin set up his Mary Sues to catch all the limelight despite being way less competent than anyone else in the cast. Yeah, it's pretty understandable that they aren't making the best decisions given their age, but everything seems to work out just fine for them anyway while Ned Stark got his head chopped off.

Fourteen in the books.
I can see it being potentially annoying that he gets most people on his side with relative ease and has no determined opponents who aren't shown as thoroughly malevolent; Alliser Thorne has no redeeming features in the show, and doesn't even get his explain-my-PoV speech in the books, while Janos Slynt is a corrupt sycophant through and through. Admittedly Bowen Marsh is the exception but he only acts that way after Jon's had no sympathetic opponents for four books, by which point the pattern's rather been set, and even at the end he's in tears as he follows his decision to its conclusion.

Okay then given that I've not read or watched anything game of thrones related maybe it'd be better to briefly describe MG and see if it rings any bells. In a world where pretty much everything wants to kill and eat them sentient mice have banded together into a society of loosely affiliated cities and villages. One such city is the stronghold of the Mouse Guard a military organization which has something of a complicated relationship with the big cities.

Members of the mouse guard protect mice as they travel, attempt to keep villages and cities safe, and just generally run around stabbing things, except in winter, only someone with a death wish goes out in winter if they can help it.

Well given I've already ordered Torchbearer, and it's supposed to be a Mouseguard hack (minus the mice), would getting Mouseguard be worthwhile still? ie is the fluff and such interesting enough to be worth going over on its own?

If so I'll probably go with that. Alternatively I'm still open to any other suggestions.

Yes, the fluff s interesting enough.

Is there actually any place I can buy it? It doesn't seem to be on the Burning Wheel site, so all I'm finding is a bunch of crazy overpriced used copies.

If you don't mind using a PDF there's this. Otherwise the game is out of print. Though Arcadia claims they intend to reprint it some time this year.

This isn't an old school book by a long shot, but I'm not sure where else to put this up.

I just printed off all 400 pages of Dungeons: the Dragoning: 40k: 7th Edition. If there's interest, I'd be willing to rip into it and tell you all why it's terrible (and trust me, it is terrible).

That sounds fantastic. One guy started on it but never finished, and thought it was "actually surprisingly good and playable", so failed on that point. And I used to have it + the supplement for it, but decided to rid my hard drive of it, in case it ever got too full and I might one day need the space for porn or something.

(I mean between "delete D:tD40k7E" and "clear out Temporary Internet folder", we know the best option. Even when you have plenty of space.)

Not OSSR, but if anyone wants to do a drunk review of Farcast 151 I'd appreciate it.

Anyone wanna do Complete Psionic?

Or I could do it, though updates would be sporadic.

I'm not volunteering to pay money for it or taint my harddrive with a download of it, but it'd be hilarious to see that one. I mean, it'd be like a review of Thatcher: easiest target ever, you know it's going to be mean!

My favourite thing about that book was that fans of Psionics actually paid money to be told "your stuff is weaker now, HAHAHA EAT A DICK". Not even 4E did that, they released their errata & downgrades for free.

Not really. While they did introduce some nerfs in the book on the whole that bastard was a massive power-up. Bullshit like Linked Power and Synchronity are much larger psionic giveaways than some nerfs to the already pretty weak and impotent Astral Construct power.

If you want a major sourcebook whose only purpose were across-the-board nerfs you'd be talking about the Complete Warrior.

Anyway, in addition to recasting my perennial vote for Exalted: Lunars I also vote that someone does the translated Sword World 2.0 RPG.

From what I know of the mechanics, that game is more Neckbeard Old Skool than Lamentations of the Flame Princess.

I'd love to see, and would be willing to do, a Sword World 2.0 drunk review. Unfortunately, as far as I know they only English version is a partially completed fan translation of Book 1. I really have no way to know whether reviewing that is fair or not. It's a little bit like drunk reviewing something after having only heard a second hand report of its contents in a bar.

Once when I was running Sigil Prep, I allowed a Psion on the grounds that I felt obligated to include absolutely everything ever like there were a committee that forced it for "official" SP games. Anyway, he wanted a rule of "we will include only the following (new powers and feats that don't affect existing stuff), not (the nerfs) introduced in C:Shit". I told him he was free to not use any element of the book at all, but the basic rules have been amended to reflect any revisions made to powers such as "DC 10 + level + stat mod".

He flipped his shit about that one. In retrospect, it would have been best to just go "No, fuck you, I hate psionics" rather than going "Sure, but you're not going to enjoy it", but still. Granted, I've never really been too pleased with the idea of one-trick-pony characters (yes, the Tripstar falls just as much into this. The Fire Mage is close, but at least gets other fancy tricks at later levels - still, I only accept it's presence as-is on the grounds that it was created in response to "make a mage that's dumbed down").

But yeah. Many bitter tears that he couldn't have a character that focused on "I hit it for (level+boosts)d6 of (whatever it doesn't resist) damage, (Ref or Fort, choose the worst one!) half, DC (no)." and had no other abilities.

Granted, he also wanted a skill "Profession: King of the Universe" (from his home plane, as the prince of such) that "works basically like Leadership, you make skill checks to convert people into your followers". And when I explained that A) that is totally bullshit, and B) SP is largely about making fun of rules as they are written, not just changing them on whims, this later came to haunt me in the form of "Technically, by the dictionary, you're only prone if you're on the ground, lying face-down. We're making fun of the rules as they're written, right? I'm lying down but not prone!"

[/storytime]

At least that had some feats and prestige classes that were halfway worth taking, even if they were taken by Clerics and Druids more than by Fighty Men. Might have had one or two good Exotic Weapons too, but let's just say I have my doubts.

Can I request Monsters of Faerun? It was quite obviously written by people who failed to understand how 3rd Edition worked. It's full of horrifically CRed monsters and random humanoids lacking any interesting abilities.

LOTFP has released a free adventure.

It would be interesting to see another Denizen's perspective on it.

I might give it a shot later, I *think* I have that book somewhere. I picked it up on the cheap when someone recommended the Good Lich* to me, it's just a question as to whether it survived moving house 6 times.

*Which is a great example on its own. They are Liches, except Good. Now that is nothing special or ruinous, that's a grand idea. They literally only differ in that they get Animate Dead at will.
