Yeah, the first Gym in Gen 2 and Heart Gold/Soul Silver is a Flying-type gym.

And the Pokemon type classifications (as in the types that given Pokemon are assigned, although Pokemon types have a lot of overlap as-is) are often rather vague or confusing (for example, note that Gyarados is Water/Flying, despite being unable to learn any Flying moves, and being a fucking water dragon, and Lucario is Fighting/Steel because Giant Fucking Frog)

As if anyone picked anything other than TYPHLOSION for their starter in GSC/HGSS though. Never happened, ever. Okay, I can see someone maybe wanting the crocodile. And it's no worse than picking Charmander (ie what EVERYONE should do, it's just awesome) in RGB/FRLG, what with the first two gyms being Rock (aka "fuck you") and Water (aka "again, fuck you").

Yeah, the types are dumb. Also the bit where Flying Bugs (including "big enough to ride" Scyther) can't learn Fly, but fucking Pidgey can. Nevermind that there are non-hacked Pikachu with Fly (and Surf). And the two most draconic looking pokemon are Charizard (European) and Gyarados (Asian). Neither is actually Dragon.

I don't know, Blastoise and Venusaur have their merits (and combine to make MOTHERFUCKING VENUSTOISE!)

This made it obvious that my avatar had to be changed.

I always took Totodile as mine. Feraligatr was all kinds of awesome.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

So one of the things I made sure to do when my sister was over was to trade Larvitar over. I now have a Tyranitar to help Haxorus sweep foes. Lucario and Emboar are actually sidelined for a bit.

I derived entirely too much pleasure from Rocksliding the fuck out of shit with Tyranitar.

Now there's even better Rock-type moves. And Crunch and such are now death...

Hm. I need to work on HG

Mine has Rock Polish (because when you use a Flinch move, you want to be faster), Rock Slide, Earthquake and Crunch. I'm willing to swap Rock Slide out for Stone Edge when I get the chance, and then I'll probably swap Rock Polish for an attack-boosting move or something.

Axeface is Sword Dance, Dragon Claw, Ghost Claw (replacing DOUBLE CHOPPA!) and False Swipe. The last one there is for catching stuff, of course. I'll replace it with a Fighting Move when fighting seriously.

Frillish evolved, but aside from Surf, doesn't really have any good moves. Eventually there'll be Surf/Scald/Shadow Ball/X, where X could be Recover or Will-O-Wisp or maybe Rain Dance.

The firebug might join the sweeping team when I can be bothered, pulling a Sunny Day/Heat Wave/Bug Buzz/??? (another Special Attack with good type coverage, maybe Thunder to take care of enemy Rain Dancers).

In Stadium 2, I had some luck with a Lanturn. I delayed evolving a chinchou until it learned Hydro Pump. Then gave it Rain Dance, Thunder, and...I think Ice Beam. Can't remember.

Rain Dance the first turn, then Thunder/Hydro Pump as needed.

Hydro Pump pretty much always hit for me. Just lucky that way. For actual walking-around in-game, I did one up with Surf and Thunderbolt and Ice Beam. Forget the fourth move...

I can never resist making a dancing bug, giving it Quiver Dance/Fiery Dance (ok, that's a lvl 100 move, replace with favorite fire move until then)/Bug Buzz/Something. When I feel like humiliating the computer, I'll give it Rest in the last slot and a Chesto Berry, because I'm the kind of guy that spent a lot of time doing comp stomps in SC.

Of course, Quiver Dance! I forgot what is practically the most important move. And yeah, at level 100, Fiery Dance.

I can see the benefit to ChestoResto, yeah. You can fairly reliably get a few Quiver Dances off, eating the attacks they throw at you (unless you suspect there's going to be a Rock attack or something), then Rest your HP up, Chesto yourself awake, and only lose the one turn spent actually using Rest. And then you're basically good to go for the rest of the day, unleashing STAB moves that do enough damage to OHKO even when they're not Super Effective.

I'll probably go Sunny Day/Quiver Dance/Heatwave (Fiery Dance at 100)/Bug Buzz. As much fun as it'd be to throw a Thunder or Hurricane in there to fuck with Rain Dancers (see: I don't do competetive battles, so it's not really relevant). And this way, not only can it sweep on its own, but setting Sunny Day up means things like Liligant and Leavanny can get their speed boosts. If Lili can learn Solar Beam, even better.

That said, if Vulpix -> Ninetales can be found in Hidden Grottoes, I can just use that, as their Hidden Ability is Drought, so "Free permanent Sunny Day until you swap out for Tyranitar and Sandstorm them".

Incidentally, the Dragon gym was a piece of cake. Occasionally I let Lucario do some Ice Punching for the minions, but the final fight was literally Haxorus going "Sword Dance -> Dragon Claw (OHKO) -> Dragon Claw (OHKO) -> Dragon Claw (OHKO) -> dance in a circle because you just won".

Yeah, I just used Outrage and Blizzard (nothing I had knew Ice Beam, and the TM is in Giant Chasm) and that fucking murdered everything that Drayden had while they were still Dragon Dancing.

Remember, kids: before you start buffing, make sure you can survive a round or two of the other team punching you in the face, because this isn't Dragon Ball Z where you get a free episode (or ten) of charging.

...so I took level 41 Electabuzz out of the PC to bring along to the final gym. I'm not actually sure why I bothered, as Haxorus went up first (of course), and then proceeded to 2-shot Carracosta (DClaw to nearly half, then it shell-smashed, thus reducing its own defence, and the second one did the job without getting into "X used a Full Restore!" range). Then Sword Danced 3 times for Wailord, OHKO from Dragon Claw, and then Hi Jellicent! Shadow Claw! OHKO.

Yes, if I had to face a Steel gym I wouldn't feel so cocky I'm sure. Then I'd actually have to bust out Emboar/Lucario. Or you know, Earthquaking Tyranitar, whatevs.

And getting Scald was very important, as now my Jellicent can do some serious damage (while being a Wall at the same time). And as much as I prefer Water Absorb, Cursed Body is really cute for randomly Disabling enemy moves.

The Water Gym Leader is a fucking joke.

Like the Gen III one in R/S/E (which was made even more hilarious by the fact that in Emerald he's Champion, although it makes the game much easier, which is needed since Gen III is the hardest Generation IMO) and the Electric one in D/P/Pt (made easier given that I started out with the Fucking Continent Pokemon.)

Giovanni was fairly easy to beat, but Ground actually is a decent offensive type, despite being a poor defensive type (comparable to Ice, actually) and he had really good Ground Pokemon (really high leveled ones, too; they were on par with the Elite Four's in most generations IIRC.)

Also, he's the first Gym Leader to do anything outside his Gym (and the only one to have another significant position at the same time,) heads the best criminal organization (they just want to take over the world, none of this hippie save the environment or the Pokemon bullshit, and don't need Legendaries to carry out their plots,) and most importantly he has an awesome hat in Gen IV.

That being said, he's only slightly tougher than the Water or Electric 8th Gym Leaders, and that's mostly on virtue of having better Pokemon at higher levels (but I love him anyways.)

The hardest 8th Gym Leader was Clair, by far, especially her Kingdra that has decent stats and only is vulnerable to Dragon-type moves (and in Gen II those were very rare.)

Here's a toast to Turtler!

And here's proof that's relevant to Pokemon.

EDIT: I just realized that I need to link to at least one image macro or video in any post relating to Pokemon because Giant Frog.

Yeah, Clair is tough. I love the way everyone else speaks about her in HGSS, saying her outfit is embarrassing.

As for doing things out of the gym, I assume you mean meaningful things, right? Because the Normal leader in 2gen spends plenty of time shopping, Lance is always wandering around, doing stuff, FIGHTING CRIME, and Clair sometimes hangs out at the Dragon Den just to sulk or something.

Roxxie leads a band, though that's actually in her gym. Elena (I think that's her name, I just think "Lady Gaga" now thanks to you) is a fashion queen... in her gym. Whatshisname is a renowned painter... in his gym. But let's face it, when you're gym leader, you get to move your hobbies into your gym. You're allowed to do that shit.

I suppose I could mention that Clay is a miner, and... wasn't there a Ground/Rock gym leader who was an actual scientist of fossils in one of the games? Arguably Brock and Misty go off adventuring with Ash. Sabrina leaves her gym to go be a movie star, a move that I thoroughly endorse. But she's not doing the two at the same time.

So nobody has had Giovanni's success or ambition, sure, but plenty of them... kind of do other stuff sometimes.

I liked that in FR/LG too, just the gossip they'd have about Gym Leaders and other trainers of note.

It made it seem more like a world, somehow.

Kind of like the size/weight comparisons in the Pokedex.
Koumei wrote:As for doing things out of the gym, I assume you mean meaningful things, right?
Yeah, I meant the only meaningful one (save Misty and Brock in the anime, but I was referring to the games' continuity, and even in Yellow Special Pikachu Edition they remain Gym Leaders.)
Koumei wrote:Elena (I think that's her name, I just think "Lady Gaga" now thanks to you) is a fashion queen... in her gym.
I believe that is the single greatest contribution to humanity that I have ever made.

Certainly it is to the Den.

Blaine was a scientist of some sort (if you go by the manga and, I think the first movie?, he was an ex-team rocket scientist), and Erika was an Ikebana instructor.

I need to amend the "most annoying" list. The Shadow Triad are way up there, with all of their "We appear out of nowhere, grab you, teleport you elsewhere and vanish. There is nothing you can do even though you just won the battle, nya-nya" antics. I mean, if a DM in a tabletop game did that more than once, players would walk out.

I used my Masterball on a fucking Metagros. Sure, it's Catch Rate 3 (as in, literally as hard as every Legendary which isn't called Groudon or Kyogre - those two are bizarrely easier to catch), but it still feels like a waste. It was on literally 1 HP (False Swipe) and Paralysed, and wasted all 20 Ultra Balls and 5 Timer Balls.

Oh well, if it becomes relevant I could always win another one, or transfer then trade a pokemon holding one of the 600 I miraculously have in Diamond. Maybe a Dunsparc carrying one, seriously, what the fuck is up with so many areas having "Dunsparc: 1% chance of showing up in Hidden Grotto", taunting me with the checklist?

You get a second Master Ball post-game; if you go to the Player 2 Laboratory after beating the Elite Four, Team Plasma's ship will be there and Colress will be there and ask to fight you; if you win, he gives you another Master Ball.

Also, Rashirom and Zekram (sp?) seem to have really high catch rates for legendaries too; in both games I just used an Ultra Ball when they were at low health and caught them.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can transfer items from Gen IV to Gen V.

Reshizekyuuremiromnom were pretty easy to catch in BW, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were easy this time round too. And I went and sold about 300K worth of gateux and lava cookies to the chief lady who pays premium rates (I guess she'll be baking some kind of desert slice?) and then bought 99 each of Dark and Ultra Balls and a bunch of Timer Balls.
Darth Rabbitt wrote:Unfortunately, I don't think you can transfer items from Gen IV to Gen V.
Damnation. Still, given my DS' wireless doesn't actually seem to work at all and I'll therefore need a new AR to get the stupid event pokemon, I guess I can just use that for Master Balls.

Yeah, it only works with DP though, not with any of the newer games. Not because I would need to input all the code by hand (although that is also true), but because losing the link cable means "lol you can't upgrade the firmware of the AR, which the newer games require because fuck you".
