"In this place I wouldn't be certain of anything. It would seem in keeping with the Mad God to have the floor fail to drop, say, one time in ten. Just as you are getting used to the cylinder dropping, suddenly it rolls on by and..." Kai makes a squishing motion with his hands.

"I'm more worried that the pressure plate does something different if you trigger it while the cylinder is rolling. Maybe the checkered walls close in and crush whoever's between them. But there's not much I can do to check that."

Shojiro advances north. If the checkered walls and pressure plate are in a direction that is not north, he advances in that direction instead.

[Ancient History]

Shojiro advances north, along the path with the checkered walls; his steps seem to echo a little strangely as he passed between the red, white, and black tiles, but nothing untoward happens. When he reaches the end, and stands once more before the room with the door and the pile of keys tied together with a chain, he feels the floor press down yet again under his tread - and somewhere far behind there is a booming metallic thud, and a brief scream in the darkness.

Shojiro calls back to the others.

"Something sounded different this time. Maybe a creature was crushed or a badly-oiled mechanism triggered."

He continues into the door room.

[Ancient History]

In the center of the north wall is what appears to be an elaborate circular door, with a knob in the middle, over a hundred key holes of different shapes, sizes, and metals set into the stone. On the left is a large pile of keys, also of different shapes, sizes, and materials, bound together by a chain and heaped together. On the western wall, an opening reveals a smooth passage downwards.

Shojiro moves to the right-hand side of the north wall, takes out a hammer and chisel, and begins to chip away the stone from the edge of the circular door. He keeps an eye on the keys, ready to hold his breath if necessary.

Kai carefully follows Shojiro's lead, gingerly walking between the checkered walls whilst looking around for signs of danger.

As he steps between the checkered walls, Chip trips on the ledge of a floor tile. His shoulder slams into the checkered corridor wall, which gives off a reverberating boom in response as his weight presses against one of the red tiles. [Spot check passed] Chip stares down at his feet, and notices that the wall has shifted a fraction of an inch.

Shojiro's initial blow leave a faint but discernible mark in the dark stone. Further blows are rewarded with a deeper gouge, then a tiny sliver of rock falls away. Soon Shojiro falls into a rhythm, the steady repetitive clink of chisel on stock echoing down the hallway.

Archibald waits until Kothre has crossed. If everything seems kosher, he's going to follow in her footsteps.

"So that wall does move." Cadwyn observes. He pulls out a coil of rope, and begins to tie one end of it to the lever, making sure not to pull the lever while doing so. Once Archibald crosses, Cadwyn will shepherd Madoc across, with the coil of rope unspooling behind him.

[Ancient History]

Chip, Kothre, Archibald, Cadwyn & Madoc all make it safely across the slightly-askew checkered walls without further incident, Cadwyn's rope now attached to the lever.

As before, you hear the golden cylinder rumble past - this time, from somewhere beneath your feet.

"Okay then. Let's see if this works. Might need to put a spike in the wall." Cadwyn plants his foot on the rope, and pulls up on the free side, to try to get the rope to pull downward on the distant lever.

[Ancient History]

Cadwyn pulls. The rope stretches taught. Long moments go by, veins popping out on his forehead as he tries to apply greater force on the rope. Madoc worries at the loose end of the rope. As you all watch the short handle of the lever responds, slowly inching downward - and then just as it reaches the midpoint, there is a soft click and it snaps into the down position.

All around you, the stone begins to hum and vibrate. There is the sound of huge weights falling or gears shifting, the deep thrum of strange mechanics behind the walls, the floors, the ceiling. Then there is a sudden lurch as the entire corridor - rotates at a right angle, so that what was the floor is now the eastern wall, and what was the western wall is now the floor - which everyone lands on in a tumble of limbs, knocked prone by the sudden shift. Fortunately, few of you tumbled far enough to receive any damage.

Shojiro, however, is in the room at the end of the corridor when the horizontal suddenly becomes vertical. He scrabbles for a hold at the wall but misses [failed Reflex save] and falls - to land in the opening, and slides down out of sight. The pile of keys likewise shifts, and when it hits the "floor" that was the western walls, rises up into a vaguely humanoid shape, dark pits where its eyes should be.
