[D&D3ish]Crypts of Chaos: Scouting Interest

Post by Ancient History »

I've been tinkering with an idea for a one-off, play-by-post game using the D&D3.+ ish ruleset. Scouting interest to see if anyone is interested in the game.

The Premise
One part sandbox, one part dungeon crawl. Your group has been wisked away to the Crypts of Chaos by the Mad God. What you do there is entirely up to you, but I've drafted out an initial maze and some locations, so we can play it by ear until you escape or reach an ending you find suitable. There may be a prophecy involved at some point, but don't get your panties in a twist about it.

The Hook
I'd like to try an open-ended D&D3ish ruleset. That means that we begin with the System Reference Document ( http://d20srd.org ), and any class, feat, rule, etc. in there is open for use. Players may also choose to import any D&D rule, class, feat, spell, etc. from a published sourcebook, magazine, web supplement, etc. with the following guidelines and restrictions:

1) Any book/magazine/source you use, I get to use as Mister Cavern. Any book/magazine/source you don't use, I don't get to use either.
2) Any rule that would affect the other players' characters, they get a vote on whether it goes in the game. Majority rules.
3) No straight-up fan material.
4) No material not in the English language.
5) Anything from a related d20 system (Pathfinder, True20, etc.) may be allowed, but goes up to a vote from the rest of the players. Majority rules.

Ideally, I'd like to start everybody at Effective Character Level 1, but we can maybe bend that if people are hard-up to play level-adjusted races or monsters.

The Golden Rule
This is designed to be a fun game, to allow players to play whatever they want. If that means munchkinning out, awesome. If that means I get three different flavors of winged elf, awesome. I do not require players to play nice with each other, and don't care what alignment/classes/etc. anyone goes for. I want to see people crawl through a dungeon and have fun. If you're up for it, let's hear it.

The Treasure List
1. Beneath the thirteen step to the dragon's lair, the third black scroll.

2. Beneath the fallen warden, a soul stone.

3. Behind the plaque of Vectra, a false brick: the missing trump.

4. Sixteen steps in Hel, then left three steps, the stone above is hollow: the Black Orb.

5. Pull the left lever, descend the stairs, paint the sigil of the fly with blood to access the vault of the runestone.

6. Beneath the Fountain of Lustful Death, to the south, on the altar, make a sacrifice and grasp the cursed blade.

7. Pull the third lever in the third row to reveal a soul stone.

8. In the Brides' Room, descend the stair beneath the third coffin in the third row: life without end.

9. East of the entrance, the center of the spiral: behind the light is the second black scroll.

10. In the Chamber of the Serpent, press the left eye: the Crown of Stars.

11. Between the Devil's Chessboards, press the left eye. Let three others drink before you, then break the chain: The Ring of Elemental Mastery.

12. In the Crypts of the Fallen, the third house on the third street: The Giant's Pizzle and the Daemon Engine.

13. West of the entrance, above the Threshold of the Succubus, insert the Giant's Pizzle to gain the familiar.

14. Beneath the Fountain of Blood, to the north, touch the altar: redemption.

15. Above the God's Coin, a hidden passage, riddle the guardian, and access the Library of the Stone Wizards.

16. On the threshold of the Mad God, third step hollow: the Empty Cube.

At the end of each line is a mark - a cross with a dot in each quadrant.

Sounds great! And I just happen to have a bunch of free time right now.

What happens if a PC dies? New character? Does the player get booted out of the game?

If the player wants to keep playing, I'm cool with new characters.

I have that book. :)

Since new PCs or spooky revenants are both possible, how does a basic human Rogue with 14 in every attribute sound?

Whatever floats your boat. Start drawing up a character sheet. Any gear or whatever not from the SRD, make a note so I know where to look.

Hmm, colour me interested. I have time for play by post, it's IRC that's going to be tricky.

I'll look at making either an elemental-worshipping Cleric (taking some sub-optimal choices but ultimately "being a cleric"), or do the "multiclass shenanigans to qualify for Spooky Spook at level 3".

Sounds really awesome. Would you allow some Tome stuff like the Frank Fire Mage?

Please see rule #3. Though we can maybe put that to the vote. Or maybe you can build something similar using all the other options.

If we're voting, I vote against initial inclusion of Tome or other fan material. We can always let in more crazy later on, but cutting allowed material from the list is generally more painful for everyone.

I'm interested. I'll see about rolling up some kind of basic spell caster. 14s in every stat would be fine, or I could roll some dice.

Also, your SRD link includes Psionics, UA variant rules (many of which are incompatible and/or complete unworkable), and divine rules. Are those in by default? Personally, I'd rather they weren't, unless there's stuff in there that players specifically want to include. But I'll play either way.

Everything in SRD is permissable - if there are any particular rules from UA that somebody wants to use that would cause an issue, we'll work that out.

Olaf Abdulov Image
M TN Human Rogue, Level 1, Init +6, HP 8/8, Speed 30 ft.
AC 14, Touch 12, Flat-footed 12, Fort +2, Ref +6, Will +2, Base Attack Bonus +0
Morningstar +2 (1d8+2, 20 / x2)
Shortbow +2 (1d6, 20 / x3)
Sap +2 (1d6+2 subdual, 20 / x2)
Leather Armor (+2 Armor, +2 Dex)
Abilities Str 14, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 14, Cha 14

Olaf is a peasant from the land of Bogarus. Not content with life as a fifth child on the potato farm of his parents, he moved to a city looking for work and soon turned to burglary. He was not very successful. One day, he busted into a decrepit temple and tried to pry the quartz eyes out of an idol. Unfortunately for him, this drew the attention of the Mad God.

Fair enough. A lot of those rules end up just being minor bonuses, which aren't a big deal in the long run.

Well, Shrapnel's craziness has gotten me wanting to play a lost predacon (basically I'd just do a warforged druid)... if that'd be ok.
Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

Sure. Just make it clear what books or whatever from Eberron you're using.

Cool. First step is making sure they even can be druids by RAW, though.

Every time I go to make a level 1 sorcerer or wizard, it's a painful reminder of just how good the Beguiler class is. Oh well.

I used 14s for all stats, but I can change that later. Still got a few things to finish up (gear, languages): Cadwyn

Cadwyn grew up on his family's farm, helping to herd the cattle, guard them, and, when necessary, recover them from the vile cattle thieves in the next valley. He also participated in the glorious liberation of cows originally belonging to said vile thieves, where he went berserk, growing to great size and causing his enemies to see fearsome visions. His natural skill with magic seems to have caught the attention of the Mad God.

Oh come on, Frank is hardly someone you can compare to a typical fan writer. That is not being fair to the man, considering he has actually written stuff for this hobby at one point and gotten paid for it.

Looks like Team ChaosCrypts is going to be pretty multicultural. I hope we can get along well enough to work together against the owlbear menace.

And to think I was mildly concerned that my silly camp character would break the mood.

I did the 4drop1 thing. What kind of starting cash does a 1st level Cleric get? My PHB is packed in storage and that's one of the three things they don't include in the SRD.

Sources I would like to use:
[*]Player's Guide to Faerun (or any other book that includes the Metal Domain, honestly - CDiv probably has it), for the Metal Domain.
[*]CompChamp, for the Fire Devotion feat
[*]PHBII, for the Sacred Healing feat
[*]FRCS (or IIRC CompWar or a Dragon Magazine, reprinted on here) for the Lucerne Hammer

Honestly I could take different domains/feats/weapons though, if people don't want my choices unlocking superdoomstuff against us.
