So here's the deal: it's a draft format game. Which means that the first thing we are doing is to create our own nations. The game will take place in the middle era, and that means that you draft your troops and commanders from different factions in the middle era. If you draft a build-anywhere troop, you can select any troop that is build-anywhere for any faction in the middle era unless someone has already selected it. Ditto for capital-only troops and commanders. Yes, that means that only one person is getting Jaguar Warriors.

Starting army would be your General and your Scout plus 400 gold worth of your third and fourth drafted national troops. PD from 1-19 would be 20 gold worth of your 3rd and fourth drafted build-anywhere troop led by your General. At 20+ you get 40 gold worth of your 1st and 2nd drafted troop and your second-drafted capital only commander.

The bolded bits are because you can select your Pretender from any faction in any era, not just the middle era. I assume this means that someone will select the Lich Queen. And when you select your starting gems, you can select any composition - even if someone else has already selected the same gem composition.

Yes. And vice versa, if for some reason that matters. So you can take Caelum High Seraphs, Pans, Marsh Masters, or Skrattir for a build-anywhere commander, but Daughters of Avalon or Initiates of the Deep have to be capital-only. And yes, that doesn't make a lot of sense. But it's easy to adjudicate, as opposed to having an argument about where a hypothetical country "deserves" to get build-anywhere Panic Apostates.

You won't be a water nation, so while amphibious troops may be extremely helpful, capital-only aquatic troops will simply drown if you try to purchase them.

Think carefully about the national spells. A lot of the really good national spells are actually 3 or 4 national spells in a series and you'd only get one. Further, a lot of spells require a context that will not necessarily exist. For example: since you won't actually be Pangaea, you won't come equipped with holy spells that boost undead or with the ability to create vine dead. So the Carrion Centaur will just kill population to make normal ghouls.

How are draft picks decided? I've worked up a tentative list, but some choices are obviously dependent on other choices being available.

Also, can national spells be non-rituals?

There are a couple of different methods.

Straight draft. People pick in order. You can stagger this, so that whoever picks first, gets the last pick in the following round and the second person to pick, becomes first in the following round, eg.

1,2,3,4,5
2,3,4,5,1
3,4,5,1,2
...and so on.

Snake draft. The picking order reverses after every round. You can also stagger this to limit the number of back-to-back picks, similar to what has been done in the SadAss game.

Then you have the lottery. Usually this just randomly determines the initial order in a draft, but you could do it for every round. Normally this would be a chore, but with the number of online programs supporting this (fantasy sports leagues), it is a little easier.

I have no preference, but would advise against an unmodified straight draft. That way, with the proportion of players to picks, people will be getting 1st pick in at least one category.
Also, can national spells be non-rituals?
I guess so. Things like Eriu's spell songs would be pretty easy to port over into a new nation. Same goes for the Holy spells.

Yep. If you want to get Regrowth (Pangaea, Enchantment 4) in order to empower your priests to give regen to your undead units, or Holy Pyre (Marignon, Evocation 4) to give your fire mages some cheap low level AoE spam, that's fine too. You could even grab yourself a global enchantment by snagging Illwinter (Jotunheim, Blood 6) or Carrion Woods (Pangaea, Enchantment 8) to give yourself an extra middle finger to give to the planet in the late game. Any spell that is Blue for any mid-era faction can be drafted if one of the other factions hasn't taken it already. It will require the same amount of research, the same paths, and have the same cost in gems or fatigue as it does for whatever faction you're poaching it from.

The only thing to remember is that a lot of spells are part of a series and you only get three literal spells, not three classes of spells. So you might want to look closer at things like Call the Amesha Spenta (Caelum, Conjuration 8) that makes six different flavors of Spenta and less at things like Angelic Host (Marignon, Conjuration 7) that only gives you the one flavor of Archangel. If you were actually Shinuyama, you would get all three Tengu spells, but for the Draft that would eat up all three spell picks.

What Angel said. A Grand Thaumaturg is just an Astral/Death priest in draft format. He's not actually able to raise longdead. Special reanimation, such as giant longdead, carrion beasts, or monkey ghouls are also nation-specific.

Note however that Demon and Undead priests will have the reanimate command regardless of what nation they work for. But they will only have the generic options - no lictors, no soulless atlanteans.

Having looked at it a bit closer, I think the draft order for build-anywhere leaders should be altered a bit:
  • Build-anywhere Priest (no magic paths other than Holy)
  • Build-anywhere General (No magic paths at all, leadership of 40+)
  • Build-anywhere Scout (No magic paths at all, stealthy)
  • Build Anywhere Commander (Open)
  • Second Build-Anywhere Commander (Open)
And then your PD starts with the general and you start with the general and the scout. It's not glamorous, but people really do structurally need a unit that can ferry troops and it's a bit too trench warfare for people to be popping Level 3 Priests on 1 point of province defense - and too stupid the other way to have peoples' PD running away on turn one because the PD Commander pops without the ability to lead troops.

Thoughts?

So, what decides your second PD leader under this model?

Also, if you can't have a priest as your first PD commander, it cuts off the strategy of having a priest and some sacreds as your early PD to squeeze some extra out of your bless.

I use indie commanders to ferry troops around. Fundamentally, I think that you should just give the factions a commander and a scout to start, and let all factions recruit a basic scout and commander. I don't think that MA has the depth to really give 9 or 10 people a scout and no magic no holy commander that they will care about. Once the fliers and the spies are taken, people will basically be left with guys that are just not that good. Not a big deal the way these games tend to work out, but that would be a borring round for the draft (top 6 or so grab the giant scouts, the spys and the fliers, everyone else gets nothing of interest).
I think that the leadership is irrelevant for PD unless you have undead or magic beings in it, as long as the commander can lead the unit type, the number doesn't matter. Also, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there is more than one noncapital no magic H3 in the game, and I think that guy is aquatic anyway.

I would be interested in playing, but I can't commit to 24 hour hosting schedules for another month, my schedule involves being away from a dominions computer from 9am to 9pm on tuesdays and thursdays. Depending on how long this takes to get set up, this might be a nonissue.

There are more than just scouts who are giants, flyers, or spies. There are also assassins, stealthy troop leaders, and some other weird stuff.

Definitely enough for ten players.

The Something Awful format seems to limit the draftable units only from a specific number of nations and not all of them.

In retrospect that might be a better way to do it, otherwise people will still have a ton of good picks for the 2nd or even third commander choices anyway due to having choices from, what, 15 nations for half the number of players?

Well, personally I kinda think that assassins are like scouts that draw wardecs. And stealthy troop leaders will likely already get taken in the "recruit anywhere general" round, but if you think there are 10 picks worth making then I don't really object. My only concern was that there was not enough depth, if there is, then I have no problem drafting commanders and scouts. Personally I would define enough depth as around 12 exciting things.

@Zinegata: It is a good thing that your second choice matters in my opinion.
