Guillaume's been a long time friend of mine and I've found his fanfiction to be of a much better read than most others.

I would suggest reading The greater evil series. A great reworking of Pokemon into a fantastical world.

I too have started writing fanfiction lately. Uh, on adultfanfiction.net and I don't think I will be linking it. But something I've found is that it works better if you plan the whole thing out ahead of time, listing the chapters, with dot points.

Have others found that to be the case?

Yeah, I read all his fanfics except ARSENAL a while back, they're fun.

As for writing fanfic, it's just like normal writing, except with way less quality control on what gets published. So just write well and you'll be fine. Here's a few quick resources:

Bleach Fanfics

Stray Cat Strut Once upon a time, a boy who was met a cat that wasn't. Things sort of snowballed from there.
Love and the Art of War Ise Nanao accidentally gets into a date with Zaraki. It goes better than either of them would have guessed.

Harry Potter Fanfics

Osward the Ottoman Harry beat Voldemort by turning him into an Ottoman. Decides to keep him, despite the wishes of everyone else.
Altered Destinies Harry goes back in time to assassinate Voldemort as a baby to stop his horrible future from happening. Finds Timn Riddle being beaten as a kid and can't go through with it. Ends up being his guardian and gets dragged into WW2. Pretty good story.
A Black Comedy "Two years after defeating Voldemort, Harry falls into an alternate dimension with his godfather. Together, they embark on a new life filled with drunken debauchery, thievery, and generally antagonizing all their old family, friends, and enemies." This story is hilarious and really makes me laugh.
Number Games Ron Weasley, an aging quidditch player in the middle of possibly the biggest game of his life, looks back at the places where his life changed for the better and the worse.
To Fight the Coming Darkness NonHBP. Harry Potter and Susan Bones. Gritty realism, independent Harry and a believable Voldemort all in a desperate battle to control the fate of the wizarding world.
The Lie I've Lived "Not all of James died that night. Not all of Harry lived. The Triwizard Tournament as it should have been and a hero discovering who he really wants to be." The Dementors in year 3 shook free a bunch of memories from James Potter. After making a bargain with the Sorting Hat (horrible, foul mouthed artifact on parole) he gains the memories and tries to figure out what he is. Oh, and survive in the Triwizard Tournament. This story was awesome.
Bungle in the Jungle: A Harry Potter Adventure Harry finds out his memory has been tampered with and has been manipulated during his summer. Tags along with Bill to south america on an expedition to find a Horcrux there. Learns a lot about himself and the world, and kills a shitload of Inferi.

Naruto Fanfics

The Indirect Approach On the eve of the Chuunin Exams, during his training with Jiraiya, Uzumaki Naruto is going to learn the hard way that some enemies just can't be beaten without use of a more... Indirect approach...
The Melody of the Fox Tayuya didn't die after the Sasuke Rescue arc, Konoha gets her to defect thanks to a bond with Naruto. An interesting story that I've enjoyed, aside from the ending.
Spying no Jutsu "Disguised as a girl, Naruto will spy on Kage level kunoichi at the Cute Polar Bear Hot Springs Festival. On a related note, Sasuke deals with his growing attraction to a mysterious new kunoichi." This story is definitely worth a read and it does NOT involve Naruto falling in love with Sasuke, I assure you. The sequel could end up being awesome, if it gets updated more.
Fuuinjutsu Naruto gets sent back in time to the Yondaime's era, which fucks up his chakra. Ends up working for the Third as a Seal specialist and spy.
Kyubed: Shinobi's Revenge on Naruto Two ninjas from earth (crossover?) end up there. Teach Naruto to be an actual ninja, unlike those posers. It's been pretty good, have had some laughs.
Tempered in Water Apparently Haku was a girl pretending to be a boy pretending to be a girl. Ends up being spared and is now attached to him by the hip. It's definitely not all roses as Mist does not like loose ends.
Naruto: Altered History Nobody knows that Naruto has the kyuubi in him, not even himself. Hated anyway for being an asshole. Gets trained by Anko. Pretty awesome story.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Fanfics
Taking Sights Gendo gets sent back in time after Instrumentality and decides that i wasn't the best of plans, so he tries to change it for the better. Unfortunately, his original plans are a bitch to beat. This story has hilariously surreal moments.
Shinji Just Snaps and Totally Wales on Everything. The title sums it up.
"The One I love Is..." A classic Eva fanfic from back in the day. Worth reading.
This page has a few good Eva stories, such as "Higher Learning"

Crossovers
Evangelion/Warhammer 40k. Thousand Shinji Shinji gets raised by a Thousand Son's pysker and becomes a scheming bastard with psychic powers. Way better than it sounds.

Browncoat, Green Eyes Harry Potter/Firefly. Harry finds himself woken up from stasis via a magic ring sometime after the Serenity movie. Hijinks ensue.

Going Native Galactica/Star Trek: TNG. "What do you do when you're a lost Starfleet officer in the Beta Quadrant? You blend in and hope for the best." Turns out Gaeta was a stranded Starfleet Officer who got stranded. What happens when the fleet gets found by Starfleet? Will Gaeta be tried for violating the Prime Directive?

Children of an Elder God Evangelion/Lovecraft mythos. This story is awesome and fuses the subjects very well. Read this if nothing else.

People Lie Naruto/Lovecraftian mythos. OOC? Definitely. Is it interesting and at times awesome? Definitely.

Aeon Natum Engel FEAR/Eva/CthulhuTech crossover. Or rather, CT with the plot of Eva transplanted with elements from FEAR. It was a pretty decent read.
Aeon Entelechy Evangelion A rewrite of ANE, and is immensely better in a lot of ways. Both are worth reading. In progress.

Megaman fanfiction set before any of the games. Features young Dr. Light and Wily working as part of a team trying to save the world from multiple manmade ecological disasters.
Guiding Rainbow's Light

Part of an anthology of Megaman fanfiction by different authors. Varying quality within the anthology, but this story was pretty memorable. A mostly-human division of Maverick Hunters and the discrimination they face. Really captures the horror of the Maverick Virus effectively.

MARVEL STORIES:
Polarity A zombie apocalypse focusing on Spiderman C-list villain The Shocker. I rather enjoy this story.
The Shocker: Legit? The Shocker has gotten sick of a damaged body and living off povetry fare in between jail stints. Today he's not going to jail, and instead tries to be a hero.

CROSSOVERS:
In Flight Fate/Sekirei Plan. Shirou takes the place of Minato in Sekirei Plan. Shit gets awesome. I'm glad this addresses how fucked up the show's concept is (only seen 2 episodes, myself)
The Hill of Swords Fate/Familiar of Zero. Shirou is summoned by Louise instead of Saito. Cool stuff happens. The author and Shirou eventually turn Louise into a decent human being. Watched the show after reading this and wished that she'd die instead. Hurr, female on male violence is hi-larious.
Chains of the Kindred 40k/Halo. A convoy of Imperial ships enter a strange warp phenomenon and end up at earth just as the Covenant attack in Halo 2. Things just get worse as Chaos and Tyranids get involved.
The Black Company in Middle Earth Black Company/LoTR. The Black Company works for Sauron during the War of the Ring. It really felt like the Black Company, to me.

WARHAMMER 40K
Gav and Bob A story about an Ogryn soldier. Sad, but I liked it.

HARRY POTTER
The Substitute The Goblet of Fire's connection to Harry during the Tournament reveals that Harry may not be what he seems. Sad

Naruto Fanfic:
Never Cut Twice An oldie. After the failed Sasuke rescue mission Naruto goes AWOL and becomes a missing nin. Ends up meeting strange and interesting people. It has a lot of amusing moments. 'Giggity Giggity Gig no Jutsu', indeed.

Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness describes what was going on at Hogwarts during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

A MSTing For All Seasons contains some of the best MSTs I've ever read including MSTs of the infamous Oscarfics and the works of Dr. Thinker (check the Megane 6.7 area for those).

Also, from the hardcore rationalists that brought you Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality comes Luminosity, a retelling of Twilight with Bella as an introspective Guile Hero. It's an interesting concept, but Stephenie Meyer gives me hives so I haven't gotten too far into it.

Totally seconding Black Comedy, one of my favorites. Anyway:

Stealing Harry "In an alternate universe where Sirius Black never went to Azkaban, Harry divides his life between the Dursleys' house and Mr. Black's bookshop -- until Sirius realises what the Dursleys are doing to him, and takes him away from their care." Longfic is looooooong. But good.
Carnival of Dark and Dangerous Creatures Being a werewolf sucks, and people will go out of their way to make it suck as much as possible for Lupin. Dark.
Harry the Hufflepuff Trying to become the King of Slackers takes surprising amounts of work. Comparatively short but really funny.
The Serpent and the Mirror "From the Case Files of Dr. Dumbledore (psychiatrist): The Case of Harry P." Good reinterpretation, that one.
The Scarlet Line "From the Files of Dr. D.: The Case of Edward C." 'Nuff said.
No Antidote Marty is your standard 10 year old starting Trainer. Marty is badly poisoned by a bunch of Beedrils, incurable brain damage. The story is about his Bulbasaur. Character-driven. Sad.
Reluctance A 21 year old /b/tard is booted into a Pokemon journey. Abandoned after 3 chapters, but those were pretty enjoyable 3 chapters. Humor.

I have a couple horrible drafts in various stages of completion...one where Gotrek & Felix fight tooth-daemons with gigantic brushes, and another Star Wars fic which can probably be best summed up with the words "Force Sex"...they may never see the light of day, and the world is better for it.
