Good luck. I have a friend who bakes for Panera. He likes the job, but it makes him tough to hang out with.
how so? schedule wise?

Those are good.

You old codgers need to realize that your big bad words stopped being a big deal a long time ago. Long enough ago that when I was eight shit wasn't a big deal, I have no idea what contempt current eight year olds have for people who think shit is a really bad word.
It's one thing for adults to use swear words because they know when and where to shut them off. A two year old doesn't. Swear words are not allowed at school (which he attends twice a week) and other places that we frequent, and I have no desire to be asked to leave because it's disruptive to have my son let fly the profanity.

Further, swearing reflects on the parent and is an indicator of what sort of thing goes on at home. My son and I will be judged by the things that comes out of my his mouth, and I have no desire for that to be reflected on him (people, especially teachers, will assume he's a bad kid), or me (people will assume I'm a bad parent).

And, of course, if I allow my son to swear, my mother will kill me.

;)

It's just a matter of time before my little kiddos start swearing blue. I'm almost resigned to it since I can't help it myself (and my wife isn't much better!). I'll be sad when we have to start restricting what movies we watch when the kids are awake. We watched The Big Lebowski last night and were happy that our son wasn't paying too much interest.

If/when I ever have a kid, I'm teaching it to swear in cockney. People'll think it's too cute to be offended when he's young. When he's old he'll know how to make his intent clear.

Yeah, my daughter just started picking up on the road rage. My wife always joked that she would teach her "Fuck" as her first word, but the first time it got repeated clear as day, she wasn't so keen on it.

Heh, if/when we have a 3rd kid and it winds up lacking any Y chromosomes, it is my intent to name her Alyson Kathryn (my wife loves the letter Y). So I can call her "Alley cat".

My efforts to name our second son "Brock Lee" were defeated sadly, but I have it in writing that my girl name will happen if we ever wind up having any girls.

My husband's family immigrated from Norway, and his dad wanted to name him Kanute. His mom said that was fine so long as she was allowed to have the middle name - myass. Needless to say, that's not his name. Bonus point for my kids, though... There are a ton of Zeldas in the family tree on the Norwegian side, so if I really want to destroy my [future] daughter's life, I can claim legitimacy outside of video games.

And I've heard my mother say over and over and over again that she hates girls' names that begin with H. She was genuinely flabbergasted when I pointed out a decade ago that both of her daughters' first names start with H. Completely missed that one, Mom.
My son makes me laugh. Maybe he'll make you laugh, too.

What I am saying is that it doesn't reflect badly on the parent to anyone except other old people. I don't know how old your teachers are, but if they are under forty, they probably won't assume he's a bad kid, and if they are over forty, they will probably assume he's a bad kid no matter what, because they want to live in the past when everything was better.

Really? I'm well under 30 years of age and think that people who swear are assholes who need have their "Fuck you" thrown back at them.

So really, stop pretending that "only old people" or "only retards" have an issue with swearing. Lots of people value politeness and civil discourse.

If anything, it's the swear-a-lot people who are in the minority.

Really, a concern troll is concerned about tone? OMG this is news to everyone!

FYI, did not say anything about retards. I guess you must have just been foreseeing my response to your complaint, but failed, because your concern trolling is way more important than your retardedness for this issue.

And yes, young people are in the minority to older people, at least those who are in any position to have a conversation about it.

*yawn* Yes Kaelik. Prove again that you're an utter waste of time by trying to change the issue to "Zine is a concern troll" when the issue is really "Kaelik is trying to justify swearing even though society - both young and old - frown upon it because they do actually value civility."

Wanna change topics? Let's bring it on then.

I'm shitting all over your cherrios you dickshit. Because I feel like shitting all over your cheerios.

Because you're a retarded piece of excrement who displays a clinical lack of empathy or socialization. And who's trying to justify his own dickshitness instead of getting psychiatric help.

So let me cut off your only avenue of socialization (which is being a troll) by refusing to answer any more of your trolling. Bye.

Oh, I know what you're saying, but reality and your perceptions don't really line up all that much. Especially in instances where swearing is against actual rules and punishments ensue as a result of the behavior.

My son likes school. I have no desire to have him excused from class because of his language - especially when all that has to be done to keep him in class is for me to shut up. I refuse to allow my son to be punished for my behavior.

Yeah, it's more of a matter of being pragmatic. It doesn't matter if the rules make sense. The rules are there, and the kid will be disadvantaged if he breaks them.

And even outside of school, there are certain situations that require stricter social rules, such as job interviews and such.

1) Your kid being punished for saying shit is him being punished for your actions? And my perception is the one that doesn't line up with reality?

2) I already said if all the "teachers" or whatever are old people, oh well. But see, younger people are sane enough to notice that when a two year old says shit, that's not grounds for punishing anyone.

Though I'll be honest, I am really confused at how your kid can be so young that he can't possibly be held responsible for his own actions, or be expected to understand it when you tell him not to do something, and yet simultaneously old enough to learn anything in school, and be held responsible for his actions.

The situation you are describing is super confusing, and I'm basically going with "school" is a euphanism for the worst daycare center ever, who think that kicking kids onto the street is an appropriate response to their own failure.

I get uncomfortable with more than occasional swearing, which is yet another example that disproves Kaelik's gross/stupid generalization.

I assume you tried to sit down your kid and give the "that's a bad word and you shouldn't say it" speech?

Yes, to both.
If Maj does not moderate her language (her actions), her children will hear curse words, and (being children) subsequently use them, because they generally learn "if mom does it, it's okay". So when teachers hear this and punish the kid for saying "naughty words", it will indirectly be due to Maj's actions (not moderating her speech).

As to your perceptions lining up with reality...I've had my kids at 6 different schools since my oldest started going. At none of these schools was it permitted for children to swear, regardless of the age of the child or the teacher. THAT is fucking reality.
2) I already said if all the "teachers" or whatever are old people, oh well. But see, younger people are sane enough to notice that when a two year old says shit, that's not grounds for punishing anyone.
I have no idea where you are or what kind of schools you're familiar with, but I'm going to venture to say that at most schools they frown on casual use of curse words, especially in younger children. And yes, they will get punished. This is true even for younger teachers.

It's only confusing for you because you're a retarded narcissist, who somehow thinks that all of modern society subscribes to your own personal social ethic.

But (as has been shown in this very thread), NO, not all of the younger generation of adults think swearing is peachy-keen awesome. It is still frowned on many places, including the majority of schools and workplaces, and you will get in dutch if you do not clean up your mouth. I can be FIRED for using curse words in the workplace.

I am a teacher in my early 30's. I teach 11-12 year olds.

If they use cuss words, I refer them to an administrator, and they are punished according to the district's discipline hierarchy.

I cuss like a sailor outside of work, but not in front of my students. Ever. I can be fired for doing so.

I just got back from a luncheon. I won employee of the year for large business something-or-other (I can't recall right now, but I'm told the place I work for handles forty-eight buildings and there's several companies in this...).

That was the most edible "official function" food I've ever had. The fried rice was kickass.

Oh, the award came with a $50 gift card to Wal-Mart, Wally World being one of the sponsors.

And my boss gave me the day off. So I'm settling in to enjoy my 3-day-weekend.

Yes, let's go back and review my "gross/stupid generalization"

"probably won't assume he's a bad kid,"

Wholly fuck. You getting uncomfortable with more than occasional swearing does prove that young people probably will think he's a bad kid.

It's a good thing that most people are slaves to your will and have complete correlations between totally unrelated things.

Protip: The generalizations I have made are the ones that I have actually said, not the ones other people make up off the top of their head.
PoliteNewb wrote:Yes, to both.

So wait... If Maj does not give birth to her child, it does not hear or say curse words. When teachers here the kid saying "naughty words" it will indirectly be due to Maj's action (giving birth).

Fuck! You just blew my mind, I had no idea that Maj's kid was being punished for her giving birth to him.

Or you know, something being necessary for X to occur does not mean that anyone being punished for X is being punished because of the necessary action. And the kid is actually being punished, assuming that there actually would be punishment, because of what the kid choose to do.
PoliteNewb wrote:As to your perceptions lining up with reality...I've had my kids at 6 different schools since my oldest started going. At none of these schools was it permitted for children to swear, regardless of the age of the child or the teacher. THAT is fucking reality.
At no school that I ever went to was it permitted to swear either. That's because school regulations are made by people who get elected by people who are overprotective of their kids enough to show up at local school board meetings with strong preferences. What the rules are has very little to do with what actually happens.

I mean fuck, at the school I went to, anyone who cussed was supposed to be expelled. Not suspended, or detention, or whatever, straight up expelled zero tolerance. Do you think that was even close to the case ever?
PoliteNewb wrote:I have no idea where you are or what kind of schools you're familiar with, but I'm going to venture to say that at most schools they frown on casual use of curse words, especially in younger children. And yes, they will get punished. This is true even for younger teachers.
You do realize this is about a two year old right? Like literally anything you have to say about real schools doesn't even apply, because this actually can't be a real school. I mean, it's not that I don't think real schools have rules against things, it's just that if your kid is too young to be responsible for their own actions, I think mostly people won't decide that they need to be punished, and are bad kids.
PoliteNewb wrote:It's only confusing for you because you're a retarded narcissist, who somehow thinks that all of modern society subscribes to your own personal social ethic.
You are really dumb. First of all, I'm pretty sure exactly no on subscribes to my own personal social ethic, but no, the reason I am confused is because how the fuck can a two year old go to school. Preschool is like 4, so you can't be in school in the first place at two.

You explained this beautifully. Thank you.
Virgil wrote:I assume you tried to sit down your kid and give the "that's a bad word and you shouldn't say it" speech?
He's two. He's seriously 26 months old. The whole "this abstract action is bad, don't do it" isn't even developmentally applicable right now.
Kaelik wrote:Or you know, something being necessary for X to occur does not mean that anyone being punished for X is being punished because of the necessary action.
Call me when you have kids.

Seriously, what a kid does is the parents' responsibility. And all I have to do is stop swearing. That's it. Why wouldn't I do that?
Kaelik wrote:I mean, it's not that I don't think real schools have rules against things, it's just that if your kid is too young to be responsible for their own actions, I think mostly people won't decide that they need to be punished, and are bad kids.
How do you think children learn about responsibility? They have to learn that an action results in a consequence. When my son climbs up onto the bathroom counter and gets into the medicine cabinet, he gets punished. I'm not going to be all permissive just because he's two - that just sends him the message that I don't care about what he's doing and he can get away with it.
Kaelik wrote:how the fuck can a two year old go to school.
My son doesn't talk. There's nothing wrong with him, and he's been saying occasional words since he was eleven months-ish old, but he doesn't talk. His doctor told me he was fine but I still requested help, and so she referred me to the speech therapist for the local school district. They have a program for really young kids, and he met the prerequisites of failure* so I enrolled him. It's not the kind of school where you sit down at a desk and pretend like you're paying attention to the teacher - that doesn't get anyone to start talking. It's the kind of school where the teacher is directly interacting with the kids [and the kids are interacting with each other] and playing games designed to elicit a response.

If Giovanni says something he's not supposed to, and it gets picked up by the other children (which happens frequently), then he will be excused from the class. If he keeps doing it, the disruption to the other students will mean he's not able to participate in the program. And if taking the prudity of the school district and shoving it up my own ass is what I have to do in order to help my son, then guess what I'm not going to be doing? Swearing.

Fuck you, Kaelik.

* Talk about a conflict of interest. When your child is being tested for anything, you want them to do well, but if they do too well, then they aren't eligible to be helped in the area in which they are lacking.
