The House reauthorizes the FISA program for 6 more years. It will now go to the Senate.

Trump initially quoted Fox News, complained about the program on Twitter, saying it would have allowed the previous administration to surveil the Trump campaign. He then walked the tweet back 90 minutes later.

Just what I don't want: more NSA powers under the Trump administration.

The EPA made a rule that prevents scientists who are getting EPA grants for enviromental research from serving on advisory boards.

Since pretty much all environmental research is funded by EPA grants, this is essentially a prohibits qualified scientists from advising the EPA.

He's back and he's running for Senate. And still talking about how Obahma's a secret foreigner. Between him, McSally, and Ward, I don't care who the democrat is, they are probably getting my vote.

Is there a law preventing convicted criminals from running for senate, or is it just one of those things that hasn't really happened before but of course if anyone was going to do it, it'd be a Republican?

Technically, there's a democratic convicted criminal running for Senate, or at least the primary in 2018.

But there probably isn't a law, and you know, there probably shouldn't be, for the same reasons that there shouldn't be laws preventing formerly convicted people from voting. Because allegedly, the point of convictions isn't to brand someone on the forehead with a flaming letter so we know they are eternally bad people we should punish for life.

If you think someone's past crimes reflect an ongoing character flaw that should prevent them from serving, don't vote for them. Or you know, if you think that someone's past "crimes" indicate a sound moral judgment and they should be elected President, vote for Nelson Mandella.

I'm okay with that not being a law, I just thought it actually was a law. There do seem to be a lot of ways to get disqualified from various political matters in America. I might have just made that assumption based on the bit where you can't vote while you're in prison or something.

Not at the Federal level. Some States have laws preventing it. Florida, for example, broadly bars convicted felons and people adjudicated mentally incompetent from holding office.

Florida wrote:

(a) No person convicted of a felony, or adjudicated in this or any other state to be mentally incompetent, shall be qualified to vote or hold office until restoration of civil rights or removal of disability.
(b) No person may appear on the ballot for re-election to any of the following offices:
(1) Florida representative,
(2) Florida senator,
(3) Florida Lieutenant governor,
(4) any office of the Florida cabinet,
(5) U.S. Representative from Florida, or
(6) U.S. Senator from Florida

Most States don't, however, or have a limited time of disqualification.

All senate Democrats and one Republican support a net neutrality bill to block the FCC decision. All they need is one more Republican vote, as it is not vulnerable to a filibuster. Sadly, it faces longer odds in the House...

The shutdown actually happened. We'll have to see how long it lasts. Trump is spinning on Twitter already.

I'm trying to remember who it was who said any government shutdown is the fault of the president, back when Obama was facing a possible shutdown. There was definitely someone saying that, on Twitter and possibly to any camera he could see.

Having the government shut down on the one year anniversary of Donald Trump's inauguration is one of those pieces of heavy handed symbolism that makes me roll my eyes at this particular cheesy political thriller. That it was caused by the Republicans spending two different budget reconciliation votes on not passing an actual budget and instead doing a failed healthcare repeal and a successful tax giveaway to rich people just makes it less believable.

Ah but Frank, you forget: FICTION has to be believeable. Reality has no such need . .
