[Non-political] News that makes you Laugh/Cry/Both...

Post by Prak »

fbmf, if you think this is too likely to fall into political arguments, sorry. Hopefully we can keep ourselves focused on nerdshit and not get political here.

Woman Marries R2D2, Wedding Presided Over by Darth Maul
...there is not a part of this which does not confuse me. Though it's at least vaguely saner than hikkikomori in Japan or Korea marrying video game characters... (I was about to wonder what they do when they want to play a different game, but then I realized they probably have a second console/handset for that...) This seems to just be a random act of nerdery, and the woman doesn't actually believe she's in a commited relationship with a movie prop.

Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

There was a contest for a wedding under the three-story high gundam in Japan... That was really pretty.

It did look pretty, yeah. It's a another crazy act of nerdery, but harmless crazy.

I honestly wonder what the "gays will ruin marriage" people think about nerds marrying inanimate objects. I'd love to see someone marry their vibrator, just for the spectacle of it.

...Because legal marriage requires two consenting people? The argument for opposite marriage is based around the old tradition that women could not consent, but her husband or male relative could.

But a goat or vibrator or child or someone in a connected power structure or drunk cannot consent, so...

Can we please not turn this thread into bestiality and pedophilia? You know, like what happens with every other thread that deals with the issue of consent?

Post three and there's already side comments about social issues...

I enjoy meteor showers, and I await the day when I have a car again so I can drive out and watch another. The recent one looked like it was cool. I particularly liked this one picture...

"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

My girlfriend wants to get married under the Gundam. She's not too bothered who to, it's the Gundam she wants. I just accept this as part of what happens when nerds get together.

It's all good. My wife and I had an Ewok village cake and a Wicket cake at our wedding reception, plus Star Wars figures on every table.

Keep in mind this was in a slightly upper-class Italian restaurant. The wait staff said they'd never had so much fun setting up for an event.

Caterers love nerds because they do stuff that's different and fun.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Bananas and coconuts are the reason that you can't move back to the isles that were bombed. They collect the radioactive potassium and cesium.

Those aren't really 'false' alerts, if they trigger the radiation sensors. o-o

Around five years ago in Sweden, some Larpers were murdered in costume, so the press went with the "Roleplaying gone bad" angle - "D&D teaches kids how to kill" (or something to that effect) was the most memorable headline.

When it turned out they were random targets of a non-gamer who killed them for their stuff, the media just sort of went quiet and pretended they hadn't said anything (as usual).

And here in Melbourne, someone was convicted a while ago for murder, with the prosecution bringing forward this grant total of evidence:
[*]He is an unsocial geek who plays D&D

Pious students might have to spend more time studying and less time on electives to pass more stringent math and science requirements.

There is a certain 'no duh' and 'isn't that how it's supposed to work?' to this.

They get a special break during the day and only have to graduate with 18 credits?

Damn. I should have gone to school in Utah. I woke up early to go to seminary when I was in high school. Our high school required 22 credits to graduate, and most of the classes I took were honors/college prep.

:tsk:

Was it on this messageboard that the article about the Creativity Crisis {OK, newsweek, brains} was posted? Because I think that article actually addresses the real problems in the school system: So long as we put the emphasis on learning for the sake of passing a test, we're not going to do very well, but when we put the emphasis on the practical and everyday applications of knowledge, then people excel.

I saw an article recently that was discussing a study that learning seems not to be a straight accumulation of knowledge - so on average, kids do better, then worse, then better again on the same material as they progress.

Did anyone else see that? I'll have to look for it.

My school had electives lined up so that the forestry students could take double-block classes in the morning and not miss required classes. I took a double-block of electronics.

Wii sextoy mod (Note: probably not safe for most people's work).

My only surprise is that this wasn't out earlier.
