Saw Krampus the other day. I liked it. It's probably not up to the standards of a lot of people here, but it was an old-fashioned monster movie that went heavy on the practical effects. You have to appreciate that.

That being said I wouldn't call it a horror movie, more like a monster movie with a lot of black humor (or a black comedy with monsters in it, not sure which).

So I got the Hastune Miku unoffical manga omnibus. Chapter 15 has Meiko Unnamed Onee-san complaining about how there's a new, good-looking model with a good voice showing up.

The FF7 Abridged has been really hit-or-miss for me. Some of the episodes are fucking hilarious and others are mediocre, with few chuckle-worthy moments. Barrett has consistently been the funniest character and Tifa has consistently been the least.

I'm genuinely curious to see if the series' quality drops with the source material's (I found almost everything out of Midgar in that game to be overwhelmingly mediocre, especially when compared to how good the Midgar portion was.)

I may have already said this, but I read Long Halloween, a Batman graphic novel.

I found it pretty good. I could dig Batman if it did the more detectivey angle instead of "I'm going to throw money at the problem and invent a solution on the spot. Then put it on a batarang and hit someone in the head with it."

Also, I like how it's basically a Shakespearean tragedy--it didn't need to turn out like it did.

So, anyway, yeah, 8/10, would read again.

The last few OOTSes haven't been bad. I actually rather liked Terms and Conditions, even though it was talky, since it at least recognized the main plot.

Shame Roy doesn't have Throw Anything, though.

So, strange as it may sound, I never saw Robocop. Recently downloaded it, just started watching.

...this thing was put out in 1987, and I counted at least six black cops in the precinct in the first ten minutes. That is fucking astonishing, given that we still have movies with all-white casts.

It just struck me as I was watching. Granted, most of those cops were extras in the background with a line at most, but it still seemed remarkable.

The Robocop is symmetrical critiques are worth reading.

But what impresses me is that the film was only off by one letter in predicting the SUV.

It's funny you mention it; I've got this notion I like to share sometimes about how race relations are on the downslide ('things are better than when my grandparents were my age; they are worse than when my parents were') and Robocop is a movie I invoke specifically as a quick proof. You can substitute any number of other sweaty action movies from the era; Total Recall; the Warriors; whatever.

Yeah, the lead character was generally always a white male, but everybody else looked like they were cast directly out of an end-to-end walk through LA.

That's an interesting point, actually, yeah. I mean, Predator and They Live both had pretty significant supporting characters that were black, RoboCop has a black police sergeant.

I have a hard time taking it seriously given that he said "any number of sweaty action movies" but the ones he name checked are all weird and very self-conscious about American culture. For example, The Warriors has quite a bit of diversity in its cast, but it's also rather bowdlerized compared to the original book, which was basically a lurid '60s pulp novel about brown people murdering and raping one another.
