Profanity Wordfilters

Back when we were having the 'fvck' discussion, I didn't really think that any kind of censorship would be desirable. Lately, however, there's been a veritable explosion of 'fuck you you fucker' posting. As a result, I think that some filtering might be appropriate. Not because I'm offended by the words themselves, but because wordfilters force posters to work harder to make ad hominem attacks without looking silly.

"Fvcker" looks more childish than "fucker", which is good. The Something Awful forums apparently go even further by substituting "gently caress". IMO, the sillier the better.

It's sad, but I think I might actually prefer the penile metaphors of old...

Frankly the most offensive swearing is twice as nuanced in its use of slang and several times as revolting. I'd rather people weren't banned from telling someone to fvck themselves because then they'd upgrade things to worse directions than that. It's impossible to really filter it, so why bother? Worse yet, some filters wind up censoring perfectly legitimate and clean words in their... zealousness.

yeah, I'm staunchly in the "Do not fucking censor me" stance... with a bit of "No Fucker rewrites me." Which only applies when filters replace what I said with more palatable words.

damn I wish journalist's insurance were real.. and that I had some...

Strangely enough, I'm agreeing with Catharz here. I never thought I'd long for the day for word filters...

If a profanity filter is reinstated, I'd like to humbly request that "[EDITED]" not be used. It seriously ends up detracting from conversation more often than editing out something bad.

I agree that the "fuckery" is getting ridiculous around here, to the point that it's impeding actual communication. I second Catharz's suggestion that it be edited to something silly..."Hug you, you hugging hugger" just isn't as offensive.

If you can't express your opinion without resorting to sexual profanities, you pretty much fail at communicating.

I can't see anyone being unhappy at the return of the infamous fvck.

I would be. Censoring language is bad. I don't want to do it.

This is offensive:

This is not:
You fucking fucks can lick the sweat of my taint after I ran a marathon without wiping my asshole.
One is slavery, the other is freedom.

I hate censorship. I type in the word filtered versions of swear words. Don't be censoring me.

Down with river crabs.

Side note: Did you know the Australian government censors the internet and that the list of censored sites is secret?

It does? Huh. Given what can be accessed unintentionally and isn't censored, I have a hard time thinking of anything they could be censoring out.

"certainly illustrates the versatility of the word"

honestly, I gotta fall back on the old joke of the word "fuck" being so versatile that it actually takes a certain mastery of the english language to use it more than three times in a sentence and retain coherency.

Frank, you have such a way with words, and, er, pictures...

EDIT

alright, I'm gonna get off the quotes mode now... and actually write something original...

well, I'll try, we'll see how it works out...

Well, it may be true that there are more offensive things than foul language, but does that really mean that we need to treat foul language as perfectly okay and making "fuck you" into "hug you" as some Nazi thing?

Really?

What the hugging hug is up with that hugging attitude?

See, it works just as well without the f-word.

I'd say this worked out rather well...

One of the great things about this country is that it was started by a group of guys who had the fucking balls to look at their tyrannical ruler, whip down their trousers, show him their asses and dangly bits and tell him he could piss right off and suck his god damned tea off a fucking lobster’s cock.

Our country doesn’t have many things it can actually claim as its own. Most of our technology has, as I understand it, been started by other people, and technology’s not what I’m talking about here, anyway, I’m talking about culture. One thing it can call its own is telling people, quite vocally and vociferously, and with great elaboration what fucking orifice they can cram themselves and to fucking fuck right the fuck off.

As I said, our country was founding in the act of telling the man who, if he so wished, could have castrated the lot of us with a rusty, herpes infected olive fork, to fuck off. We told him he was wrong, that we could do better, and no fucker was going to tell us what to do, except ourselves. We won that war. We also tried to, in the grand tradition of people who escape one abusive relationship, tried to replace the fucker we just fought off with the first powerful man that winked at us. Fortunately that man told us we were fucking insane and set us straight. One of our founding fathers is even quoted as saying “there should be a bloody revolution every twenty years”, in effect, telling us we should tell our government to fuck off (the fucking fuckers) every two decades.

Did we listen? Nah, we tell a guy he needs to prove himself popular again or fuck off every four years, and that after eight years he needs to fuck off for good, but that’s it. But, our country loves telling people to fuck off. Charlie Manson told a bunch of people they could serve him or fuck off, so they served him. Then he had them tell some people to fuck off, with knives, I believe, maybe some guns.

The Unibomber blew up a building, and in that act of terror, in essence told the country they could fuck right off the mortal coil.

Hunter S Thompson told people, on a regular basis, that if they disagreed with what he was doing and saying that it meant they were still dangerously sane and needed to get fucked up or fuck off.

The states-bound population of a whole race of people, ones we enslaved, made work on our farms, and held the lives of in our hands, and whipped at a whim, told us to fuck off. Now that same race seems to tell fashion, music, common sense and simple decency to fuck off. Don’t you love America? Oh, they’re also telling America they need some fucking handouts for their ancestor’s servitude… the jury’s still out on that one…

Another race was told they had no claim to the land and that we wanted it, so they could fuck right off. They tried to counter with a fuck off of their own, and were all but silenced by the great American ability to tell someone to fuck off. Unfortunately, that is.

Nowadays, people tell one another to fuck off on a regular basis. Pretty much anyone who doesn’t like how you dress, what you listen to, who you fuck, what you eat, how you look, or what you read is telling you to fuck off. The great thing about our country? We can say it right the fuck back. And add a “and sit and spin you god damned whore-spawned, filth encrusted, bugger.” Even if the person is not, in the classical definition, a bugger. We don’t let little annoyances like word definition accuracy get in our way in this country.

And now, we have a great chance. Usually a forum’s mods will decide completely on their own whether to filter vulgarity. This site’s mods have given us the choice, and we told censorship to fuck off. Now some people want to give censorship another chance because things have gotten out of hand. I have one thing to say to censorship:

“Fuck off and go sodomize yourself with rusty adrenaline needle infected with a dozen god damned sexually transmitted diseases while being fucked by effluvient, diarrhetic horses on angel dust, until you are pinned to the ground by the sheer weight of dried shit and cum. No one fucking rewrites us.”

I don't know which side I just made a better arguement for...

The side that if it is offending people, we have a problem, but the words themselves are not a problem.

y'know, I should have realized that's how it would have turned out when I decided to try my hand at writing in a particular fictional character's style...

Objectionable porn is about half of it, the rest who knows, certainly not the public. Anyone who leaks that list is a hero. Check the news thread for the latest secret bullshit.

You addlepated boneheaded cretin of a dolt, that's the sort of effluvient foolishness a good-for-nothing halfwit idiot jackanape loser kook mouthbreather nincompoop oaf pansy simpleton twit wouldn't be enough of an uncouth vulgarian wretch to post unless some xanthippe yellow-bellied sapsucker zero put him up to it.

There will always be censorship on this board to some degree, if only to avoid being on the wrong side of the law. Serious threats aren't allowed. Pornography ('I know it when I see it, or possibly by how much pink is in an image') isn't allowed. Off topic discussions that make us look like a bunch of trolling idiots get deleted.

On the other hand, I'm perfectly happy to request chains of the cultural variety: why not show a little restraint when making pointless personal attacks?

Words are meaningless, only the intent counts.
I don't care about curse words used as punctuation. I do care that wordfilters break the meaning of perfectly non profanity phrases. I do care that wordfilters do nothing to mask the intent of profanity phrases.

Sure. Just because this board tolerates people being crude or even callous doesn't really mean that the board should tolerate people being directly inflammatory...

OR

I don't fvcking care about fvcking fvcks in your fvcking sentence but don't call someone a fvcking useless fvck, that's fvcking pointless.

I don't like the unimaginative language, simply because it betrays a lack of thinking on the part of the poster.

You ought to have all day to post something.

So, no on the autocensoring, yes on the 'your words are adding nothing to this discussion'.
