Believe me, that really killed it for me--right at the very end.
And the flaws in the story and characters are so easily fixable, too. Keep the revenge focus, have him survive at the end, and then have to deal with life without revenge. _________________ He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Megatokyo's problem is that Piro fired his writer.
And then it wandered into not-funny self indulgence about awkward romance between the author's self insertion character and a Japanese middle school girl. Not funny. Also creepy as fuck.

MT was awesome back when Rodney (Lago) was involved.
Lago: was it ever proven that it was Roid Rage? From what I heard, steroids had been found, but where injected into his son (who had some defect that effected his growth. Presumably an illegal attempt to boost his height so he wouldn't share his father's shame of being under 6 feet tall), and it was simply Debra who said "IT MUST BE ROID RAGE!" because that's been her eternal nemesis ever since Stone Cold punched her out due to alcohol + roids.
Wiki is useless for this, the WWE elected to delete fucking everything and pretend he never existed, and ED, the most reliable of the three, fails this time by suggesting it was a conspiracy involving the government, Jews and/or Wikipedia. Apparently he had, however, been suffering massively ever since his friend Eddie Guerero died - enough that other wrestlers noticed it. It seems more likely that he snapped due to that, more than anything else.
But yes, Benoit was awesome when he was locking people into THE CRIPPLER CROSSFACE! Not so much when killing his family and becoming a contender for the 2007 Golden ipod award (beaten by Cho Seung-Hui). |

It was fairly well proven that it was not roid rage. Guy was on Xanax at the time, though given that he killed himself and his family in a depressive funk, it's possible that he wasn't on enough Xanax.
Of course, some people have hallucinations as adverse reactions to Xanax, so it's possible that Xanax was the wrong anti-depressant for him altogether. We will now never know.

Sinfest does not update 7 days a week.
Only schlockmercenary does that. I think that it's the only comic that does that. _________________ The Gaming Den; where Mathematics are rigorously applied to Mythology.

Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic does. The author also manages nearly daily updates on The Ten Doctors.
The art isn't clean, but it's a good time. YAFGC can be quite NSFW, though. _________________ "Now that we've determined that up to π angels can dance on the head of a pin, how do we determine the specific number (or fraction) of angels dancing?"

Doesn't it? I thought they had 6 days of 4-panel B&W comics, and then a larger full-color one on Sunday?
Now I'm going to have to go check.
edit: Sinfest generally updates 7 days a week, though there have been occassional gaps of 2 weeks or more. Not bad for a comic that's been running for 9 years.

I actually gave up on Heroes after watching only season one.
My gripe was that it seemed like the writers, rather than giving serious consideration to how the various powers could be used and how they would affect people and the world, just had a particular direction they wanted the story to go and either conveniently forgot about the powers or actually arbitrarily changed their own rules with no explanation any time they got in the way.
In particular, Sylar should have been dead several times over by the end of the season, except that all the attempts to kill him experienced convenient and unexplained technical difficulties at the moment of truth.
Basically, I thought the writers were all railroading DMs. And not even good at railroading. "Your spell doesn't work. The BBEG escapes." |

Seriously.
Pain's a dick. The character is supposed to be a megalomaniacal murderer who is in love with himself, so what he did was surprisingly in-character.
The question becomes why the author decided to enable the character to perform one of the stupidest fridge-stuffings I've ever seen. _________________ This will not happen in D&D Next because Mearls is a hack-of-all-trades, a true renaissance man of fail. - rasmuswagner |

So. Grave of the Fireflies. People have been recommending it to me to watch. Repeatedly. And I gotta ask:
Why in the ass would I want to do that? Am I missing something here? Yes, I know that something can only be great and memorable when we parade human suffering in the name of art--right before retreating to our unfairly comfortable and sheltered lives--but seriously, two kids starving to death because of bad decisions one of them (a pre-teenager at that) makes? WTF? _________________ This will not happen in D&D Next because Mearls is a hack-of-all-trades, a true renaissance man of fail. - rasmuswagner |

The bad decisions aren't really made by them. They are in Imperial Japan during the war. The Americans are firebombing cities and everyone around them is too busy to give the children any food and one of them dies. It is the most depressing animated film ever made. It's world war II told entirely from the perspective of the Japanese home front from the eyes of children. So all the atrocities going on are just implied because the point of view characters are too young to understand any of it. Meanwhile they have to make do with less and less as the people still able to fight take all the resources and orphaned children waste away.
If you were some sort of gung-ho pro-war guy, you should probably watch it, because it is distressingly accurate and even handed. If you already understand viscerally the human cost of conflict you should probably avoid it. It really is like watching someone perform surgery on you.

Yeah. So many people tell me "It's good, but it's as depressing as hell, so you have to watch it once." and I tell them "Fuck off, there are good things that aren't depressing, so I'll watch them instead. Seriously, do you want to undo all the good my meds and exercise regime and bad diet are doing?"
But I would suggest showing it to the "War is great!" people, firstly to punish them and secondly because it might make them at least consider that bad things happen to people in war.
I still haven't watched it and never intend to. From the sounds of it, it deserves the same warning as was given to the Evangelion song "Komm Susser Todd": "Please do not kill yourself while listening to this." |

I'm not so sure it makes people want to kill themselves, though despite the upbeat music the lyrics are nothing to smile about, but probably ideal music to play while checking out. It was on my playlist when I was planning and preparing to do so myself some two years ago, and seemed... perfect. From the perspective of someone who has already locked in Death as their final answer, it makes it seem like an even better idea. Which means it's obviously not something you want the suicidal to listen to.
Likewise, if someone was feeling less than "Off their tits on heroin" kind of happy, I would advise to keep away from Grave of the Fireflies and go watch something much much happier. |

I think it's important to know of the sufferings of others, especially via art. Admittedly, the last time we watched it was before we had to move from our little cabin in Santa Cruz... But it makes you appreciate rice a bit more.
Of course, while we were actually packing, there was a film festival on TNT's movie channel playing several of the reconstruction era Italian films like 'the bike thief'. Seriously depressing films about people who survived the war but were for the most part too old or had their support networks shattered to rebuild their lives.
Anyhow, meds aren't supposed to 'make you happy'; you ought to be able to be happy and sad while taking them.

You, too?
The tortured children and wife was enough to make me put the comic on probation, but this is the last straw.
Though, if he uses this occasion to point out the audience hypocrisy in being OMG GENOCIDED DRAGONS while cheering for loads of murdered (hob)goblins, well, then I'll take back everything I ever said.
It's like the whole Mayuri thing. I keep waiting and waiting for Belkar to face some kind of real comeuppance but it never fucking comes. And I don't think that it'll ever come for either of these two bastards. You know, I really hate fiction sometimes.
