Delvers (Coop Puzzles)

Post by Manxome »

Yet another random project of mine that has nothing in particular to do with the forum but that you may be interested in...

Delvers is a cooperative puzzle game implemented as a custom map for WarCraft 3 (requires the expansion). You can also play it solo (you just get shared control of everyone).

The primary conceit of the game is that there are two parallel worlds, the material world and the spirit world. You can get to the spirit world by dying. The two worlds are mostly the same, but have some important differences, so you have to go back and forth and manipulate various objects to solve the puzzles.

The solutions are designed to be emergent from the rules of the world; that is, each of the objects in the game follows specific rules, and you solve puzzles by figuring out how to combine the rules to create desirable effects (kind of like Portal). However, you're also expected to spend some time experimenting in order to deduce what all of the rules are, and some of the puzzles are quite difficult.

Anyway, if you decide to try it out, let me know what you think.

Does it require any particular knowledge of Warcraft 3?

Just the basic user interface...

Left-click or left drag selects units.

Command card in lower-right shows available orders for selected units. Left-click a button and then a target to issue an order, or right click on a target to issue a context-sensitive "smart" order.

Right-click an item on the ground to pick it up. Left-click an item in inventory to use it (if it's usable). Right-click an item in inventory and then left-click on another unit to give them the item, or on the ground to drop it.

Hover the cursor over a command button or an item in inventory to get information on it.

Left click on the minimap to center your view on a desired location.

Oh, and if you hold down shift while issuing orders, you can queue them up so they'll be done in succession--that's not strictly necessary, but occasionally useful.
