Blindfolds of truedarkness (MIC) are indeed allowed and encouraged. Just make sure to get an intelligent mount to help you get to the enemy because the range is only 30'.

I've actually got an idea synergy that would work pretty well with these two characters.

Something about a humanoid that looks like they have more than one set of arms (an illusion), wearing a belt of Enlarge Person and Reduce Person; has a helmet that looks like a spider's head, and chitters.

and keeps at the barbarian's heels.

Ok. I'm guessing the throwing of acid/fire/cold is ok as well?

As in, I can assume that I can dig them out of a bandolier or something.

Yeah. Just pay per item. At this level it isn't a real drain on resources either.
