Interesting note about that: in the entire rest of the world, "Liberal" means "wanting to liberalize markets". That is, in the rest of the world outside the US, "Liberals" are what in the US are called "Economic Conservatives".

Weird? It gets weirder. In the rest of the world "Liberals" and "Conservatives" fight it out over whether money or divine right (ie.: aristocracy) should be given a free hand in doing absolutely anything they want. Which means that if you are a factory worker, the only argument between Liberals and Conservatives is whether they should take away your Minimum Wage protections (liberals) or your right to own property (Conservatives).

People who argue for the role of government as an arm of the people to protect the rights of the individual and the group from the depradations of aristocrats and capitalists are called socialists.

So um... you aren't a Liberal. Neither am I. We are Socialists. Only in the US are these words all screwed up. The United States has no official aristocracy, and so it has no real Conservatives. People with essentially conservative ideologies rally around rich people instead of the landed nobility to make the same arguments - which is why the "conservatives" in the US sound so fvcking schizophrenic all the time. They are trying to make conservative and liberal arguments for the same position: namely that they should have all the money and all the power.

That's also why the "liberals" in the US are so fvcking schizophrenic all the time. They also have Liberals in their camp, as well as Socialists, and there is little meeting of the eyes there, let me tell you.

Makes me glad I gave the finger to politics and politicians in general. It was apperantly worse than I thought.

Over here we have one sort of "conservative" party, and the rest is liberal. The big difference is right-wing vs left-wing.

Well, the larger than expected victory by the Australian Liberal party was fairly big news on an international level. John Howard is the leader of one of the few countries on earth willing to enter into Bush's unilateral coalition (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean). With the victory of the Liberal party in Australia, neocons in the states are hailing it as a validation of American world policy in White Oceania (the only section of that region that isn't Malaysia that these people give a damn about).

Considering the number of people in the US who seem to take John Howard's showing in the election as a signal to establish American-led empire in Jakarta, I don't think that failing to keep track of that sort of thing is really a safe policy for an American to take.

I think he won more because the other guy was a lame duck. Not that I expect anyone who wants to put spin on the situation to bother looking at why Howard won.
