Are these unorthodox druid idea recommended?

Post by Lago_AM3P »

A) Taking an actual honest-to-god level of monk.
B) Taking a level of contemplative.
C) Buying wildshape armor and changing into a treant.
D) My DM, for some weird reason, will not allow wolf trip cheese but WILL allow octopus cheese.
E) It looks like those silly spells in MotW are going to be approved soon. Gah.

So. What do you recommend?

A: Absolutely not. Invest in a Monk's Belt. Virtually all creatures have a belt slot, so you don't even have to do anything funny to use it while in animal form. That gives you more monking than you would get out of a level of Monk and doesn't cost your precious levels.

B: It depends upon what domains you're allowed. Losing 3/4 of a BAB and a level of Wildshaping is bad, but getting the War Domain is crazy good. This can really work out for you if you get the right domains (especially as this will allow crap like the Mysticism domain and the Hero domain).

C: This is entirely good as far as ideas go. You won't be able to pull this off for a while, however.

D: Looked at from a strict rules point of view, one of those cheese sets is legal and one is not. Which one is debatable. It's like the electric field which looks like a magnetic field if you are moving. Try to get your hands on Multitasking. This requires proficiency in the Boot Blade.

E: Gah. Well, casting Nature's Avatar on yourself is crazy-go-nuts.

A) Agreed. 1 Level of Monk is not worth the divergence of your spellcasting progression and loss of BAB. The Monk's Belt is 13,000 GP though, so keep that in mind in regards to how late in your build you can either buy or make the Belt.

B) For Druids who are more spellcaster oriented, I like 1 level of the Spell Domain (FRCS). Anyspell, Greater Anyspell, & Limited Wish give you an amazing breadth of arcane spells at your disposal. You can even use the Anyspells to cast Bard-only and Hexblade-only (woo-hoo!) spells. Using your 6th level slot to cast Improvisation is damn good for a Druid. If you choose to be a Druid spellcaster who really digs his spontaneous SNA spellcasting. Load up on the SpFocus: Conj, Aug. Summoning, & Rashemi Elemental Summoning chain of feats. With your Anyspells, "call" in more arcane conjuration spells that can more effectively use that Spell Focus feat. And of course, if you are in the FRCS, you want the Initiate of Mystra feat to accompany your Spell domain and slavish devotion to Mystra. If you are not in the FRCS, I'm sure you can take these feats and finagle them into your campaign's respective pantheon.

C) What level are you starting at? I have some good suggestions for forms to take at any given level. Whether combat or utility oriented.

D) Related to Frank's Multitasking mentioning ... it would be nice to have Armor Spikes to add to your repertoire as well. But since they are weapons, the Opposable enhancement (MotW) just doesn't seem to mechanically fit the Armor Spikes M.O. You should be able to use Armor Spikes as "off-hand" weapons as listed in their description - which may or may not add to your total attacks. But would certainly be nice to enhance your grappling and to provide you extra Weapon enhancement goodies like Spellblade (MoF). Food for thought.

E) Enjoy Briar Web insanity! That's one spell that needs to be higher than 2nd level.
