Where would the money go?

Post by Username17 »

Let's say that hypothetically you're a Fighter, and you can't (and don't have to) spend your wealth-by-level on magic swords or attribute enhancements or any other numeric bonus. All of your wealth instead goes into things that give you a real tactical or strategic benefit. Where would the money go?

So you're a 6th level character, you have 13,000 gp worth of stuff and none of it is a fvcking +1 Sword. What would you have?

You're a 10th level character, and you've got 49,000 gp of weird swag and none of it is used up in stupid Cloacks of Resistance. What else would you have?

You're a 15th level character, and you have 200,000 worth of special swag that isn't a belt of giant strength or a +4 shield. What is it?

Grendel's dragonskin bag, Alladin's lamp (or carpet), Perseus' helmet and sandals, an enchanted rice grinder, and maybe a magical stone horse.

Then again, the cash might just go to prosthetics:
A jewel of slumbering scarlet whose colour sometimes shifts to smouldering blue to replace his right eye, and a many-faceted crystal, which pulses as if possessed of independent life to replace his left.
A nine-fingered, alien thing of iron, wood and carved amethyst to replace his right hand, cut from the creature who had sliced off his own hand. A many jointed limb of silver, gold and lapis lazuli to replace his left. So on and so forth.

I don't have a specific list, but here's my thoughts:

A castle, large tracts of land, and servants tending to me.

I would go out, do some profitable dungeoneering, then retire for a few weeks persuing gentlemanly passtimes.
In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.

Bracers of Deflection. Periapts of Healing. Eyes of Seeming, Wings of flying, Bobs of Dragon Fvcking. Anything and everything possibly useful. Heck, an Animated sword, to have for a sparring partner.

No really. Getting out of the thing where magic items are merely a plus one sword and the Mage and Rogue have all the baubles... Priceless.

Ale & Wenches!

Charity.

Give it back to the people the Dragon stole it off.

Tax.

Leave half of it on the dungeon floor.

Seriously, if you go ahead and write up that idea for equipment you had a thread about a while back thats where it'd be goin. It'd be great.

The major cloak of displacement always struck me as a waste since it required a standard action to activate.

People would buy magic items that are way overpriced but give obscure benefits in certain situations. Like that Kiira thing from Lost Empires of Faerûn that stores everything you see and hear when you wear it.

Holy nerfbat batman! that is a HUGE 3.5 nerf :jawdrop:
good thing I'm playing 3.125H and not 3.5.
The 3.5 version is a total waste of 50k, even if it worked as a lesser when it wasn't switched on it's only barely worth it, as written it bites!

While I was going through the list of items, i noticed one thing: everything is either too expensive or merely adds a static bonus.

What can you do? Even items that are "kinda neat" but not good like a Ring of Elemental Command is so expensive that you can't afford it while dumb items that add to skill checks are affordable. Heck, if you get a Ring of Shooting Stars you sell it in the market rather than actually use the damn thing.

I'm actually tempted to check out the items in 2e to see just how many items went from "that cool thing we got that we use once in a while" like an Apparatus of Kwalish and turned into a +stat item out of Diablo II.

which kiira thing?

The Kiira N’Vaelahr (PGF p123) 75,040gp turns someone into a videocam, it's a good way to have your minion watch something, come back and "play you the tape".

Kiira (MoF p162) 7,500gp +2 Competence bonus on Knowledge checks after a full round of concentration. Acts as a spellbook capable of holding 30 levels of spells.

Telkiira (LEoF pg 155-156) 100,000 gp, does all kinds of crazy stuff, you must have elf blood or you get 2 negitive levels and the shiny doesn't work. Can be locked if you are the wrong family etc. holds 10 one hour memories, most likely elf pr0n I would guess.

I was talking about the first one. It solves whodunit's in a pinch if you can get the badguy to monologue while you secretly tape it.

In a world of where illusions are so good that some are even partially real, what use is that? Who'd believe it?
