Animal Feats

Post by fbmf »

Inspired by a discussion over on Nifty...

How does the raven qualify for the Weapon Finesse feat?

The Monster Manual gives it to her, but doesn't list it as a bonus feat, and raven's don't have the prerequisite +1 base attack bonus.

I noticed the answer earlier back with the polymorph errata hoo-ha. It's in the Monster Manual Errata

MM 3.5 Errata wrote:

Some creatures that have this feat lack the +1 base
attack bonus prerequisite. Since bonus feats do not
require the creature to fulfill any feat prerequisites (see
page 301 in the Monster Manual), make the Weapon
Finesse feat a bonus feat and add an additional feat (see
the table below).

...which is of course exactly the logic that inspires Hungry Jack. Good times.

Hungry Jack is Frank's somewhat legendary Rogue who took a feat at 10th level(in lieu of a Rogue special ability) that allowed him to swallow his enemies whole. Gaping Maw or something.

EDIT: "Gape of the Serpent" was the feat.

Whoa, I never really understood what was so cheesy about Rogue bonus feats when mentioned here (I assumed that it was that they are usually superior to rogue abilties), mostly because I never noticed the bonus feat clause until recently.

I suppose the same goes for human bonus feat as well (since a quasi-recent FAQ ruled that the "extra feat" is in fact a bonus feat lost when Alter Selfing). Man, this makes Alter Self-Human better than ever!

Heh, if swallowed characters lose their dex to AC that makes a level 10 rogue with swallow whole even nastier.

Humans do not get a "bonus feat", they get an "extra feat".

Fighters actually do get a "bonus feat" but they can only select feats off a specific list and they can only select a feat that they qualify for. But if they stop qualifying for the feat they can still use it because it is a bonus feat.

That's why I mentioned the FAQ where they clarify it as a bonus feat.

stupid ass FAQ wrote:
When my human is polymorphed* into another
creature, he loses any extraordinary special attacks and
qualities. Does this include his bonus feat and bonus skill
points? If so, how do I figure out which feat and skill points
are derived from his racial traits?

A human’s bonus feat and bonus skill points—like most
other racial traits—are considered extraordinary qualities, and
thus are lost when the character would lose such abilities
(including when polymorphed). This is a good reason to keep
track of which feat is your human bonus feat, since it might
have wide-reaching effects. (For instance, if Dodge was your
bonus feat, you’d lose the benefits of any other feats that have
Dodge as a prerequisite, such as Mobility and Spring Attack.)
<snip>
*The question and answer uses “polymorph” to refer to all
spells of the polymorph spell chain (including alter self,
polymorph, baleful polymorph, polymorph any object, and
shapechange), as well as to other effects that refer to spells in
the chain (such as the druid’s wild shape class feature).

[edit: cleaned up copy-fu]

It could be the questioner just confused Andy by first referring to it as a bonus feat instead of an extra feat. It really should have been corrected in the question though, rather than reinforced as a bonus feat since that is a technical name for something in this game.

Yeah... that FAQ answer is messed up in like a million gajillion ways.

1. Humans don't have a bonus feat.
2. Polymorphing allows you to keep your skills.
3. Polymorphing allows you to keep your feats.

There's basically no part of that FAQ entry that makes any sense. There's actually not a single sentence in it that doesn't have at least one factual error in it, making it possibly the worst answer ever.

I dunno, Frank. That very last sentence doesn't seem to have any factual errors in it. ;)
