So Phantasy Star was released 30 years ago, and to celebrate Sega announced a new Phantasy Star game closer to the first quadrology with turn-based combat and more fantasy elements like PS1 rather than photon weaponss and androids everywhere that have become the staple of pretty much most of the titles for the last couple decades.

Free to play for mobile. And no english trailer so probably will remain Japan only.

I'm not even mad at this point. The most recent PS games that got translated were for the DS and PSP. Still one got to wonder if Sega really hates money that much since PS is one of their best IPs and even today there's plenty of kids playing the original games in emulators and loving that shit besides the old fans.

Not to mention PSO2 has a lot of English players (Ship 2 especially) despite it being Japan-only, with fans translating the game continuously. I think Sega just doesn't know what to do with Phantasy Star in the west - either that or they're just supremely bad with marketing their IPs AT ALL considering how little fanfare the still extremely good Yakuza series gets on a western release.

Also, androids have been there since the start. Along with space travel.

I mostly remember 3 and 4, which definitely had space travel, androids and beam weapons. It doesn't surprise me they took a fine idea ("Let's make another not-online one") and then fucked it up. Or that they forgot there are countries not called Japan.

Nintendo has this problem super hard, as does Squenix.

(Also the first Phantasy Star definitely had robits and lazors and space ships. That has been a major setting element since the beginning.)

Well yeah, I'm one of those.

Considering how they go out of their way to block non-japanese IPs, demanding the use of assorted proxies, I would dare say it could be somebody at Sega really has a grudge against the west.

Actually there's some theories around that's what caused the dreamcast to fail and Sega to exit the console business. Basically Sega of America was actually doing better than the branch in Japan and the original branch didn't like that one bit.

I never said anything about the first PS not having space travel. It's part of the series charm where you get to go from planet to planet.

And yeah there were robotesque NPCs/enemies from the start, but only on PS3 did we actually get an Android active party member (plus a Gynoid to boot). Also trivia, Toyonaka Ozaki the character designer for Mieu wrote a doujin info book about her where it seems she's advanced enough to have all human metabolic functions except blinking and birth (and aging/sickness I guess), and actually enjoys having warm baths.

As for beam weaponry in the first Phantasy Star there were exactly two beam weapons for the whole party (a beam sword and a laser gun) and they weren't even the best weapons for their characters. In PS II/III/IV beam weapons remained relatively rare, until the online PS where suddenly 99% of the weapons are photon-based with neon glowing bits and that became the new standard.

A few pages ago, I mentioned this mod for the first Dark Souls called Prepare to Die Again (https://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls/mods/1372/). It remixes enemy, item, and bonfire locations. Some bossfights are also modified. It's mostly just single-player.

I recently finished my playthrough, and it's a really good mod. Most of the remixes are most evident in the first third or half of the game. It's fun to be wandering around Blighttown, or Sen's Fortress, low on Estus, and not know where you're going to encounter another safe zone. Some of the new locations are pretty clever and require much better locational awareness to discover than those in the base game.

For the post-Anor Londo areas, the mod author did a remarkable job of fixing the entire Lost Izalith portion. The dino butts are gone, enemy variety is significantly improved, and the Bed of Chaos is now an actual (if kind of easy) boss fight. The other major late-game rework is the Four Kings -- there are now only four of them, and you fight them in a slightly different way. The Seath, Nito, and DLC areas all felt basically the same to me.

Not all of the changes are positive. I think there's a greater tendency toward DS2-style gank squads. You might want a weapon with a wide range of attack. But some of the least fair parts of the base game have been fixed, most notably the Large Divine Ember location in Tomb of the Giants.

So yeah. You should play this mod. It's worth it.

Funny, considering SEGA was founded in America...

With the success of Yakuza in The West and Sega folks saying "it is successful because it doesn't cater to western tastes, as our fans want that authentic Japanese flavor", I hope PSO2 gets a proper release in English.

It's the exact kind of gameplay I wish FFXIV, Diablo, Guild Wars, etc. had.

You'd think they'd say "It's successful DESPITE our lack of marketing so maybe we should actually maybe start marketing it now and make it even more successful".

Anyone play Diablo 3? I'm currently playing s14 and am having trouble with progression. Specifically, Maltheal t13 and clearing a t70 grift solo. I was told that my build sucked and I didn't deserve to progress by some rando. As is my custom I implied I was having carnal relations with his mother but it got me thinking, maybe he had a point.

I'm currently using the zuni garg build on Icy Veins (https://us.diablo3.com/en/profile/Count ... /103230743). Is the Zuni build specifically inferior or are pet builds in general shit? If there's a pet build that might work better I'm open to suggestions, I have a lot of shit cubed and do have all the witch doctors sets in my stash.

EDIT: I actually figured it out myself.

What the fuck.

Okay, so I finally got a computer, and I finally got Skyrim (special edition) for said computer. Fine and dandy. Except... except I can't find the fucking Creation Kit! I've looked, and the internet tells me that I can find it in Steam, under Library - Tools, and it should be in a list of various downloads and such... BUT IT ISN'T THERE! IT'S NOT IN THE JESUS-FUCKING LIST!

So, my quandary is such: where the fuck is this thing? Is it because I got the special edition? Do I have to buy the regular version of Skyrim just to get the fucking thing? Is there somewhere else I can get it?

Seriously, fuck Steam, fuck Valve, fuck Bethesda, fuck the internet, fuck video games, and fuck James Watt for good measure.

Assuming you've installed Skyrim at least once? They don't sell the non enhanced edition anymore.

I did poke around with my copy and found a link to a wiki page here that has a link to click to download the Creation Kit.

Yes, Skyrim is installed on my computer. Clicking that link opens up Steam, which is then followed by a window that says "Preparing to launch creation kit" which then immediately disappears... and brings me to the Steam home page... and no Creation Kit in sight.

Once again... fuck Steam. Fuck Valve. Fuck the whole fucking human race.

To be fair before Skyrim the elder scroll series was pretty niche.

Speaking of phone tiddy rpgs, Fire Emblem Heroes added some new missions where you deploy eight units at a time (instead of the usual four) in a much bigger map than normal with the objective of capturing the enemy base instead of just killing the other team. Plus both sides get reinforcements at the end of each turn to cover any losses they sufered (back at the base and you can block the spawn points by sitting on them) and there's a ten turn limit, so overall it's actually feeling like a proper tactical rpg now!

Also we can now equip hats and assorted head accessories. Made me a pope princess.

If you define "success" as "profit", then yes. If you factor in popularity or any other metric at all, you'll find it's right in there with the other Skinner Box mobile RPGs.

Thanks, maglag. I had almost gotten myself to uninstall FEH so I could spend my time on better games and now you've gone and told me about this. I have a family, you know! :P

I have no idea what basis for that you've got. Oblivion was extremely popular, Morrowind was...well, it wasn't necessarily the first RPG people would name in 2002-2004, but probably in top-5 of those. Daggerfall and Arena, on the other hand, were indeed pretty niche.

Oblivion was the third highest critically rated game of 2006, and was the fastest selling Xbox360 at launch, looking like the 3rd or 4th highest selling title of 2006 by the end of the year.

The opposite in fact Maglag, I'd even go so far as to say they were overhyped. Then again my dislike of TES 3 and 4 mostly stems from the pants on head retarded leveling system.

However Between them putting the boots to the modding community and this bullshit it will be a while before I pick up anything with their name on it.

Profit is literally the only measure of success.

Pretty sure it isn't. For example, Bayformers made mega-millions at the box office, but each and every one of them is a garbage fire. Financial success does not make something good. You could gild shit in gold and people would buy it, but it would still be shit.

(Although I must say I have nothing against the Fate series. In fact, I rather like it.)

Profit's a funny thing.

Amazon.com basically never made any profit at all. until roughly 2016. By then, the company was already worth over a hundred billion dollars. They make about 12 billion a year now, because they killed all their competitors by not making any profit for fifteen years, but I don't think they suddenly became a success since 2016, when their growth finally levelled off. See also, facebook.

IBM make lots of profit, always have, but really, where they were 25 years ago, you wouldn't call that a success story to get where they are now. You don't own any IBM products, for instance.

Trump went bankrupt all the fucking time, and is now POTUS. Which, like, yeah, he's making serious bank off it too, but I wouldn't call him a successful president on the bit where he doesn't do anything but fuck up his own supporters lives. Even stupidly rich people don't want trade wars.

So, like, there's a relationship between profit and success, but, there's more to it.

Random (very well researched) article on how people dissing popular games after the fact was bullshit.

Interesting read. Played Myst, did not care for it personally. It did keep the adventure game genre going which was a good thing.

Author sounds like the kind of asshole that thinks listening to the rain on a window for 10 hours is deep. So he can go fuck right off. Especially when he starts inserting his politics into the article.

I guess we just have different standards for popularity, because Fate Grand Motherfucking Order is stupidly popular here in China, not only getting big booths at every gaming/anime event besides assorted merchandise everywhere else, but even the fans organizing life theather plays at said events. Skyrim meanwhile gets maybe a few props on sale here and there if that, and there's about zero Oblivion/earlier stuff in view.

Basically Oblivion and Morrowind may've had a moment in the sun among PC gamers when they came out, but it didn't last beyond some small groups of hardcore fans that won't let go and keep modding it, but then you can find modding communities for any half-decent games. But they basically stayed like that, PC games, while Skyrim and Fate/Grand order transcend the medium and spill into the real world. Players aren't even calling for HD remasters of Oblivion/earlier nor recommending it to new players.
