Man, this book really drags things out on individual puzzles. First it was the orange blob, and now we're still dealing with this? How many encounters/puzzles can the author fit into the book at this rate? 4? 5?

And it would seem that either our choices don't really matter here, or that there'd be loads of ways to die here without even knowing what we should do o get past this, never of which seems ideal.

(Actually, I'm not sure I ever got further than the orange blob section, so maybe it's the later)

Votes counted, Jang Mistral will maintain speed, and set a course of pitch +55, roll +90, and yaw +13, since that option won over maintaining speed and setting a course of pitch +55, roll +30, and yaw +13 by a 2-1 vote.

206
Your position, relative to the Grand Archipelago, is: pitch 0, roll 0, yaw 0: you are directly behind it! You fire your lasers at its most vunerable spot, and then roar away. Several seconds later the pirate’s ship explodes in a massive fireball of heat and light. After a moment’s jubilation, you switch back into time-warp, and continue on to Aarok, and your main mission. Turn to 279.
Image
279
Eventually, you reach Aarok and exit from the warp. However, as you manoeuvre the Starspray through the atmosphere’s defences of mines, projectiles and atomic blimps, you are detected and attacked by an automated defence module.

DEFENCE MODULE RATING 6 LASERS 2 SHIELDS 6

If you win, turn to 52.

The fight:
Defence Module shoots first since its rating is higher than the player’s.
Round 1: Defence Module Attack Roll: 4, Player Shields: 8;
Player Attack Roll: 1, Defence Module Shields: 4
Round 2: Defence Module Attack Roll: 6, Player Shields: 8;
Player Attack Roll: 4, Defence Module Shields: 4
Round 3: Defence Module Attack Roll: 5, Player Shields: 8;
Player Attack Roll: 5, Defence Module Shields: 4
Round 4: Defence Module Attack Roll: 1, Player Shields: 6;
Player Attack Roll: 3, Defence Module Shields: 2
Round 5: Defence Module Attack Roll: 6, Player Shields: 6;
Player Attack Roll: 6, Defence Module Shields: 2
Round 6: Defence Module Attack Roll: 6, Player Shields: 6;
Player Attack Roll: 2, Defence Module Shields: 0
Jang Mistral actually manages to survive this Combat-Weapon Clash by only taking 2 Shields damage before destroying the Defence Module.

52
You pilot the Starspray northwards towards Aarok’s main spaceport at Central City. The city soon appears: a large blue-walled fortress shimmering in the dawn light. But suddenly a red beam streams out from one of the city towers, scoring a direct hit on your craft. Your port thruster is pierced. Although it does not explode, you will have to crash-land somewhere short of the spaceport. Will you veer towards a black swamp in the north-west (turn to 154), or towards a purple desert in the north-east (turn to 84)?

Please vote before 6:00 PM PDT to guarantee that it will be counted.

Crashing into a swamp reduces fire risk, and allows wreckage to be undetected underwater, so swamp I guess.

(And, oh, so that's what that speed pitch yaw roll thing was going for.)

I'd rather not risk drowning in a swamp, so I'd go for the desert.

Thank you for the votes. I will break the 1-1 tie and have Jang Mistral veer towards a purple desert in the north-east.

84
You brace yourself as the Starspray skims over a dune crest and plummets into a valley of sand and ash. Deduct 2 points from your STAMINA. After a brief reconnaissance, you gather your equipment and depart on foot towards the distant city. Turn to 376.

376
For a long time you struggle over the purple dunes, baking under the blazing star of Sev. When evening arrives, you are still a long march away from the city walls. Near by, a cluster of flat-topped pillars, arranged in a rough circle, jut from the desert floor; you are determined to camp there for the night. But when you arrive, you hear a peculiar, low-pitched gabbling: a pack of desert creatures, or mutants, must have smelt you from the surrounding dunes. You may wish to climb one of the pillars for safety (turn to 281), or you could try to sneak quietly away (turn to 31).

Climbing one of the pillars for safety received 3 votes, so Jang Mistral will do that.

281
Before you can climb to the top, a dozen hairy spider-critters leap over a dune, shrieking wildly. Three of them begin to climb your pillar; the others scuttle up nearby columns. Will you plant your heel in the face of the first spider below you (turn to 210), shoot several off a nearby pillar (turn to 228), or use your laser-sword and buckler to dislodge those below (turn to 178)?

Votes counted, Jang Mistral will use his laser-sword and buckler to dislodge those below, as that option won over planting his heel in the face of the first spider below him by a 3-1 vote.

178
You must fight the spiders from a precarious position, so deduct 1 point from your SKILL temporarily during the following combat.

BROWN SPIDER SKILL 8 STAMINA 4
FAT SPIDER SKILL 7 STAMINA 4
SPINDLY SPIDER 6 STAMINA 6

If you win, turn to 273.
Image
The fight:
(Brown Spider)
Round 1: Brown Spider Attack Strength: 16, Player Attack Strength: 14;
Brown Spider Stamina: 4, Player Stamina: 13
Round 2: Brown Spider Attack Strength: 14, Player Attack Strength: 23;
Brown Spider Stamina: 2, Player Stamina: 13
Round 3: Brown Spider Attack Strength: 16, Player Attack Strength: 17;
Brown Spider Stamina: 0, Player Stamina: 13

(Fat Spider)
Round 1: Fat Spider Attack Strength: 14, Player Attack Strength: 16;
Fat Spider Stamina: 2, Player Stamina: 13
Round 2: Fat Spider Attack Strength: 11, Player Attack Strength: 18;
Fat Spider Stamina: 0, Player Stamina: 13

(Spindly Spider)
Round 1: Spindly Spider Attack Strength: 11, Player Attack Strength: 15;
Spindly Spider Stamina: 4, Player Stamina: 13
Round 2: Spindly Spider Attack Strength: 14, Player Attack Strength: 17;
Spindly Spider Stamina: 2, Player Stamina: 13
Round 3: Spindly Spider Attack Strength: 16, Player Attack Strength: 18;
Spindly Spider Stamina: 0, Player Stamina: 13
Jang Mistral kills the Spiders fairly easily, but take 2 Stamina damage from a lucky hit from the Brown Spider.

273
The remaining spiders, scuttling to the tops of nearby columns, shriek at you and begin spinning long webs. The nearest spider streams a cord across the gap. It glues fast, allowing three other spiders to rush across at you. Will you kick the spiders (turn to 210), or turn your pistol on them (turn to 228)?
