Kathy hochul has now added another demand to her budget. Either the democratic legislature agrees to her demand or NY state doesn't get a budget, and her new demand, to go with overturning bail reform and jailing more innocent people is also that prosecutors should be allowed to withhold evidence from the Defense.

Just flatly the most fucked up desire to lock up as many innocent people as possible.

Kathy hochul has specifically and explicitly admitted that she is going to jail innocent people because if she doesn't lock up the innocent people the newspapers will be mean to her.

Nothing will happen because like 70% of all democrats agree that any amount of cruelty is justified as long as a democratic politican says "its so I can win elections" (without having to ever prove that it helps win elections) but in any sane government this would be immediate grounds for impeachment and this should incite a revolution to overthrow the state government of new york (but obviously wont).

One might also hope that saying something like that might also get the newspapers to say things about them.

EDIT: Er, not with any particular expectation they will or anything.

Presumably different newspapers I don't think Rubert Murdoch is going to tell the Post to criticze her for that decision.

A black homeless man, Jordan Neely, was murdered in the middle of the subway, slowly, by a white vigilante while onlookers stood by and watched.

The police immediately crowned the white murderer honorary cop and started releasing private arrest records for Jordan Neely so they could do "he's no angel" routine while the white murderer was released without charges and his name is kept dead secret.

Anyway, the democratic governor wants to vastly increase the cops budget and raise their salaries while cutting public defender salaries and firing them in a state where the average cop makes more then the average public defender.

NY and many other states allegedly abolished the death penalty, but interestingly, as official executions have declined the number of cop murders is at a record high every year like June Temperatures. Cops murdering people as judge jury and executioner is the new death penalty and we have lots of those in NY and the state government is aware of supports them and implements policies to encourage them as a way to outsource death penalties to a place society will accept. Wonder if that will have any spillover in the amount of vigilante murders or anything.

So the thing Jordan Neely did to get murdered was yell about how hungry he was on the subway, clearly a capital offense.

The governor has weighed in. "Actions have consequences." Is her response. This is apparently not about how the murderer will be tried, but instead the governor explicitly saying that being murdered is the consequence for being poor and yelling on the subway.

Boy I love to live in liberal NY where the mayor explicitly endorses vigilante murder of poor people.

A day later, Hochul (or well actually a staffer in her office, not her) has figured out which way the wind is blowing and is now trying to claim that "consequences" was supposed to be a reference to charging the murderer with murder in "clarifications" to the newspapers.

I encourage anyone who believes that is what she was saying to watch her remarks in context, as they were televised.

“For too long, those suffering from mental illness have been treated with indifference,”

An actual quote from the statement of the super rich person who killed a man on the subway for yelling.

The grand jury is going to indict, right? This is a murder that was literally recorded, and where nobody could possibly think Neely was a threat (given he had 3 people restraining him) or that a chokehold was needed. I haven't watched the video because fuck seeing another innocent person get choked to death by a bunch of very fine people, but Neely was unarmed and just shouting about how he was hungry and didn't care if he lived or died or went to prison. It sounds like there were some threats too, but those would surely be irrelevant once he was being restrained by 3 people. Is it even possible for there to be a legal justification for killing Neely once they had him restrained so securely that they could kill him at their leisure?

It just doesn't sound right at all, I do not understand any possible justification for Neely's murder except "if poor people are a nuisance you should be allowed to kill them," which is a (im)moral justification rather than a legal one.

Well you could look into my Kyle Rittenhouse thread posts for my broader theory on juries but the short answer is that all juries work on vibes and grand juries involve the prosecutor lying to jury to get the result they want, so if the prosecutor believes we should have an 365 day a year purge on homeless people (all prosecutors always believe this) he will probably lie to get this guy not indicted.

If instead the prosecutor believes that those filthy sjws might have a big protest that the cops will start beating people at which magically transforms the victims of police brutality into "rioters" then he might instead do the normal thing of lying to the grand jury to get an indictment.

The fact that people are cheering on this murder and treating it as a call to arms against the poor is disgusting. Never forget how much people love to punch down.

I thought the protocol for these the ghouls with the D in front of their name was to pretend that they care at minimum. Has the make up of the higher ups among the NY upper class been shifting toward becoming more open with their open contempt of their leaders?

The NY dem party has always been a far right state party who sees the left as their one true enemy. Cuomo was cutting medicaid and fought of Marijuana legalization for a decade. Cuomo literally arranged for the creation of the IDC, a group of "democrats" who caucused with Republicans to give the gop control over the senate by lying to voters and running as democrats. The current pro incarceration backlash is against NY catching up with TEXAS in criminal law generosity to criminal defendants which it only did in the last few years.

This is just more of the same from far right wingers hochul and other major figures in the NY state party like..... oh well.... Hakeem jefferies.

Daniel Penny has been charged with Second Degree Manslaughter (nonviolent) for which a possible sentence is probation with no jail time.

EDIT: This is a charging not an indictment, so this is not the determination of the grand jury.

Apparently court officers (not the prosecutors or judges) instructed grand jury members not to discuss cases and to just vote the indictments. When asked if these instructions should be followed, the DA refused to answer and took the juror who asked aside 2 weeks later to privately tell them they shouldn't have asked on the record.

Absolutely love it when judges, prosecutors, and court officers coordinate a concerted effort to deny due process to turn grand juries into an even more rubber stamp process for getting as many poor and black people in cages as possible.

So there're no punishments for jury tampering of that magnitude?

There is no punishment for anything a judge or prosecutor ever does. They have absolute immunity for any crimes they commit as long as the crime is trying to put someone in a cage. This time it's possible that since they acted through the court officers as proxies that their flunkies may experience some punishment, perhaps being fired. But even that is relatively unlikely since the people responsible for punishing them also believe that there should be no due process and that caging people without due process is the greatest moral good.

The NY Mayor Eric Adams, it has just been reported, engaged in a systematic practice of faking donations in order to obtain matching public funds.

The punishment for this is next election the public funds people will try to catch more of the fakes before they give him more money. There is no other penalty, because in the United States, the only rule about elections is that cheating in elections must be rewarded as much as possible.

US elections are like if Chess Tournaments were always won by the person who beat their opponent into unconsciousness with a bat and then declared victory by forfiet, but everyone still talked about how chess was a game of mental skill. Even though they agree that the most recent tournament it was non ideal the actions of the winner, you can't dispute that he did win! What would you expect him to be disqualified just because he beat his opponents unconscious with a bat? That would be disrepsecting all the mental skill he showed on the chess board!

It's not cheating if my side does it, and if Eric Adams was on your side you'd think it was fine for him to do fraud. /s

We probably should have laws against committing campaign finance fraud to steal money from the public. That seems like it's more serious than, say, stealing a TV from a Target.

I've heard that Adams is a big liar even among politicians. Hasn't he been caught fabricating events and having his staff fabricate "proof" so he can continue whatever lie he decided to tell?

Iirc Eric Adams' list of lies include things like claiming he was taken to Maclom X speeches regularly while he was a child (which is only probably impossible for him to remember, as Maclom X was assassinated when Adams was 4), that he didn't know what kale was until 2016 in spite of having been documented multiple times talking about how he eats kale prior to 2016, and that he's either god or proof of god ("Anyone who believes there’s not a God, they need to watch my journey," so take your pick as to what he means by that since neither option is true).

Eric Adams has a tenuous grasp of reality or just fucking loves lying.

A New York politics thread without a mention about the motherfucker that is George Santos? That is a fail if I ever saw one. After MONTHS of his bullshit, GEORGE SANTOS IS NOW THE 6TH PERSON AND THE FIRST REPUBLICAN TO EVER BE EXPELLED FROM THE HOUSE!

He certainly got his wish to be remembered throughout history. Way to go Shit Stain! May he rot in prison very soon!

The thread for NY politics is really about state politics, not about national politics.

We wouldn't make a Texas politics thread to dunk on Ted Cruz.

Also George Santos was the least bad republican congressperson when he was in congress. It's very funny, sure, but he's not appreciably more evil then any other person with a R in front of their name.
