Cheating at cards is illegal? I thought they simply barred people for counting cards, cheating, whatever, but it wasn't against the law, similar to how you don't have to tip drug dealers.

It's illegal to cheat at a casino (marked cards, shaved dice, etc) but counting cards isn't cheating.

But of course it does.
The shadowrun reason for the matrix is actually a reasonably good reason for using such a system.
Because the human mind is made to work with video/audio/tactile and olfactory inputs and not to think in code. So a simple translation works wonders. See pictograms.

New anodes for lithium-ion batteries could triple battery life.
http://www.gizmag.com/nano-silicon-anod ... ery/32885/
Summary: Scientists have been trying to make nano-silicon anodes, but were having trouble fabricating it. This team succeeded by grinding up quartz and stripping the oxygen out of it. The result was porous lumps of nano-scale silicon that work better than the graphite anodes used in batteries on the market today.

Scientists Develop Brain Decoder That Can Read Your Inner Thoughts
We're like 10 years away from consumer electronics controlled directly by our minds.

We're always 10 years away from computer-brain interfaces. 20 years away from computers as good as a brain. Been true since we had computers. Hopefully we're also "10 years away" from literal thought crimes forever too.
