In a real-life situation I'd hesitate about using a grenade here, but from the text it seems like there's no risk of collateral damage (even with a door in the way there'd realistically have been a real risk of injuring someone behind it), so use it.

Rolling the dice and applying the appropriate modification reveals that the grenade deals 5 damage to the Zombies before the fight begins.

As soon as you call out the name Amy, the screaming stops. You hear footsteps approaching and step back as the door opens. A young girl’s head appears from behind the door. She has a terrified expression on her face and tears are streaming down her cheeks. She beckons you inside the room and locks the door again. You notice that she is holding a pistol loosely in her right hand. ‘How do you know my name?’ she asks. If you want to reply it was just a random guess, turn to 72. If you want to reply that you have read her diary and assumed it must be her, turn to 193.

The fear and anguish that was etched on Amy’s face slowly drains away and she exhales a huge sigh of relief, saying that she still can’t quite believe you are here to help her escape. You tell her about how you were one of the people who were kidnapped and brought to the castle to be turned into a Zombie. You explain how you managed to escape by overpowering your prison guard and how you have been running for your life since, killing Zombies at every turn. ‘Gingrich Yurr has to be stopped! The only way is to kill all his Zombies,’ Amy says urgently. You reply that she is not the first person to say that, and relate the tale of poor old Boris. You tell her not to worry and that you will get her out of the castle alive – and still human! Amy manages a tiny smile and says that you have to hurry as today’s turmoil will trigger Gingrich Yurr’s twisted mind into deciding to turn himself into a Zombie and unleash his undead army on the world. You look around the room and see that it is an office, which Amy says is used by Yurr. There are several shelves on the far wall that are filled with box files and books. There is a door in the middle of this wall, and a desk and office chair in front of it. There is a meeting table with eight chairs in the centre of the room. If you want to look inside the drawers in the desk, turn to 296. If you want to open the door at the back of the office, turn to 238.

In the top drawer you find pens, paper, a ruler, a pocket calculator, a stapler, a hole punch and a phone charger. In the next drawer down you find some postcards of the castle. One of them has a short birthday greeting on the back but no address. It simply says, ‘Happy 30th Zagor’ and is signed by Yurr himself. You ask Amy if she knows who Zagor might be, but she shakes her head looking puzzled. The bottom drawer contains nothing but a notebook with the words ‘Important Information’ written on the cover. You flick through the notebook and read two entries which could be useful. The first one is ‘Username is White Rabbit’. The second one is ‘Roznik is owed $100 for blood.’ Amy tells you that Professor Roznik is Yurr’s head scientist and that he is a very dangerous man. You rip the two pages out of the notebook and ask Amy if she knows where the door at the back leads to. ‘It’s Gingrich Yurr’s private study,’ she replies. You don’t wait for an invitation to open the door. Turn to 238.

You enter a plush study which has as its centrepiece a huge walnut desk and a black, high-backed leather chair. There is a laptop computer and a telephone on top of the desk. There is a library of books covering one wall and detailed drawings of mythological creatures covering all the other available wall space. There are drawings of werewolves, vampires, demons, ghouls, ghosts, wraiths and other hideous undead fiends, some of which you don’t even recognize, which is surprising since you are supposed to be an expert. However, pride of place goes to the Zombies who have a wall all to themselves, with hundreds of gruesome photos from the castle pinned to it. Amy tells you to stop looking at the Zombies and get back to working on the escape plan. If you want to use the telephone, turn to 323. If you wish to turn on the laptop, turn to 201.

The document opens up to reveal details of an emergency exit that Yurr had built so he could escape from the castle if ever the police were to arrive before he had been able to release his Zombie army on the world. You discover that there is an electronic display panel at the back of the stock room in the south wing which will open a secret door if you key in the code number 161. ‘Come on, let’s go to the stock room now! I know where it is,’ Amy says excitedly. If you have not done so already, you can try to make a call on the telephone (turn to 323). If you don’t want to make a call, turn to 158.

Suddenly you hear the sound of fists hammering on the office door outside. You walk out of Yurr’s study and into his office in time to see the far door crash down onto the floor. A giant ape-like Zombie, well over two metres tall, stoops its head under the top of the door frame to enter the office, bellowing loudly. You tell Amy to back you up while you face the monster Zombie head on. ‘I’m right behind you. This must be Zombie Kong – an undead mutant that Professor Roznik created, trying to breed the ultimate Zombie,’ Amy shouts, pistol in hand. To defeat Zombie Kong you need to roll a total of 20 or more by combining the rolls of both your and Amy’s weapons. Add the total rolled from your weapon to Amy’s pistol (1d6+2). If you fail to roll a combined total of 20 or more, Zombie Kong will reduce your STAMINA by 6 points each Attack Round. If you win, turn to 19.

For yet another time, I will assume that the machine gun is used for this fight.

You reply that you cannot leave the castle until all the Zombies have been killed. ‘But that’s crazy!’ she exclaims. ‘You will have to go back down into the basement because that’s where most of them are, holed up in their stinking rooms. Surely you don’t want to go back down there?’ Nodding your head to say yes, you walk out of the office into the hallway. If you want to go left, turn to 356. If you want to go right, turn to 207.
