Standard Middle Era recuitables in spoilers. While it appears to be a jumbled mess, it is actually in order of nation, then standard recruitment order.

I attempted to remove obvious duplications (mainly the standard slinger), though some nations have different units with the same name but different ID#. I have not detailed the differences between units with the same name.

I also removed the obvious Aquatics, but I probably missed a few. I have little experience with UW nations. If I have excluded anything, PM me and I will update the list for reference purposes.

The things that fit the definition of "Scout" are:
  • Scout 431 (Arco)
    Scout 426 (Ermor)
    Assassin 428 (Ermor)
    Forester 56 (Man)
    Spy 427 (Ulm)
    Scout 729 (Mictlan)
    Imperial Consort 813 (Tien Chi)
    Agarthan Scout 1448 (Agartha)
    Slayer 429 (Abysia)
    Caelian Scout 484 (Caelum)
    Black Harpy 430 (Pangaea)
    Chief 283 (Jotunheim)
    Jotun Scout 786 (Jotunheim)
    Markata Scout 1119 (Bandar Log)
    Atevi Chieftan 1127 (Bandar Log)
    Bakemono Scout 1963 (Shinuyama)
    Bandit Leader 1313 (Shinuyama)
    Mujina 1436 (Shinuyama)
    Edomite Scout 2010 (Ashdod)
    Scout 432 (Atlantis)
    Merman Scout 1050 (Oceania)
    Milesian Scout 1789 (Eriu)
That's 22 scouts. 2 of them are amphibious. 2 Fly. 5 of them lead troops. You also can choose to go for spies, assassins, or giants. There are definitely enough Scouts in the MA to draft from.

Sorry, I had put the Black Harpy into the "leads troops" section because I was being retarded. It of course does both things: leads troops and flies.

I'll make a start on a basic National Spell list. This is complicated slightly by the fact that the Dom3 wiki is on an indefinate hiatus.

I'll see if I can find what I need on the Wayback Machine or a similar memory hole.

On second thoughts, I will not be doing that. I will be happy to reference the specific ID for spells as they are selected though. Only important for some of the (un)holy spells, that require different priest levels in different ages, but share the same name (C'Tis and Ermor).

I seem to recall some nations summoning sacred versons of animals with the different versions of their national spells (eg. Ambush of Tigers, Monster Boar), though that could be the result of a mod that was in play.

So I guess Capital-only commanders get picked first so that people can adjust choices based on what they end up doing?

I guess it'd look like:
Cap Commanders
Anywhere Commanders
Priest
Commander, non-mage
Scout
Cap units
Anywhere Units
Spells
Pretender

Mmm, maybe Priest first? That way you'd know if you'd need a cap-only mage/priest to cover Blesses?

Getting the Cap-only commanders and units in early seems good. You don't want to end up thinking you have a base covered and then get screwed in a later part of the draft (like trying to be a Bless nation and then ending up with a crap sacred, or an archer nation without a powerful Air or Fire caster).

They must be hardcoded or something. The workaround in this instance is to mod the base spell, rather than create a copy.

Copy the following into a .dm file and run the Middle Era 'Test' nation
#modname "test"

#description "test"

#version 1

#selectmonster 30
#end

#selectmonster 20
#end

#selectmonster 7
#end

#selectmonster 1919
#end

#selectmonster 41
#end

#selectspell 105
#restricted 72
#end

#selectspell 106
#restricted 72
#end

#selectspell 107
#restricted 72
#end

#selectspell 108
#restricted 72
#end

#newsite 751
#name "Goblin Fens"
#path 7
#level 0
#rarity 5
#gems 7 5
#end

#selectnation 72
#name "Test"
#era 2
#labcost 500
#templepic 3
#startcom 41
#startunittype1 30
#startunittype2 20
#startunitnbrs1 10
#startscout 1919
#startunitnbrs2 10
#startsite "Goblin Fens"
#end

One of the painful parts of the draft format is the fact that so many things are contingent on other things. Salamanders aren't good for much if you don't have magic leadership. Sacred troops are fairly useless if you don't have easy access to good priests. And so on.

Personally, I think that you should pick your build-anywhere stuff first and your capital-only stuff second. Because the build-anywhere stuff is going to define your nation much more than your capital-only material in the late game. I can see the argument for picking troops before leaders or leaders before troops, but I think leaders first "feels" more natural.

Gods get picked after deciding what your nation is and does. Just like with a normal game and for the same reason: the god can cover holes in your nation so you need to know what holes your nation has before choosing a god makes sense.

Spells should definitely be picked last, because that way you're absolutely guaranteed to select spells you can actually cast. Some of the niftier spells are actually quite difficult to cast. Banquet for the Dead requires a powerful death magician who is also a Priest, meaning that only the Grand Thaumaturg, the Zanzumite, and the Bakemono Sorcerer can cast that spell. I don't want someone getting cockblocked out of their death banquet because the three potential casters of the spell they had already selected got drafted before they had a chance to pick.

So the order should be:
  1. Colors and Nation Names
  2. Scout (will be starting scout)
  3. General (will be starting commander and leader for PD 1-19)
  4. Priest
  5. Build-anywhere Commander (any)
  6. Build-anywhere Commander (any, second pick)
  7. Capital-only Commander (any)
  8. Capital-only Commander (any, second pick, will be PD commander for 20+ PD)
  9. Build-anywhere troop (any, will be PD unit for 20+)
  10. Build-anywhere troop (any, second pick, will be PD unit for 20+)
  11. Build-anywhere troop (any, third pick, will be starting army and PD unit for 1-19)
  12. Build-anywhere troop (any, fourth pick, will be starting army and PD unit for 1-19)
  13. Capital-only Troop (any)
  14. Capital-only Troop (any, second pick)
  15. Pretender God
  16. Spell 1
  17. Spell 2
  18. Spell 3

I agree with this.

How do we pick from the list of "generals" though? I noticed it's a bit different from the original order:

1st build-anywhere commander

2nd build-anywhere commander

Build anywhere non-mage commander (may be priest)

Build anywhere Scout (Commander, Stealthy, no magic paths or priest levels)

Which I thought was kinda okay already.

The "General" is there for two reasons:
  • So that if you have a castle with no lab or temple, you can at least recruit something that can lead troops.
  • So that when the game assigns you a free bullshit commander (at the beginning of the game and with every province with at least 1 point of PD), you get something that isn't going to personally rip the world in half.
I mean, otherwise everyone is going to end up with like a High Seraph or something leading their province defense. And I think we can all agree that provinces with 1 gold worth of province defense should not open negotiations on round 1 with a Thunder Strike.

We could draft the General last, but honestly I think people should know whether they were able to get the Storm General (and thus will start with a flying commander) before they invest in a bunch of flying troops.

Okay. How do we differentiate the Generals from the non-generals again? The simple fact that they don't have priest, magic, or stealth?

Also, is there any other reference besides the wiki? It's down and it's left me powerless :(

I'm happy with the selection system suggested. The draft proposed seems pretty fair.

I am curious as to the set up of the game though. The map and victory conditions might influence some peoples design strategies. Not mine though, 'coz I'm special.

It's going to be down for a while. It's creator is apparently looking for another server to host it. Try your luck witth the following.

That should be everything except Pretenders. But Pretenders are also really easy to find, because you can use the Design a Pretender function instead of having to start an actual test game to see their stats.

If no one catches any errors in this, I'll put it up on the front page and we can start drafting. We currently have nine players, and the maximum is 10, so we can start the draft whenever people are ready.

Note: I expect competition for Capital-Only stuff to be particularly fierce. There are 18 drafts in those categories, and there are only 43 Capital-Only Leaders and only 31 Capital-Only Troops. When you factor in that some of them are actually quite terrible, the number of viable choices is pretty similar to the number of total choices in those categories.

Let's start this.

Why no snake draft? The most important picks are probably the recruit anywhere commander and troops, and some people got kinda screwed there. Any reason why those were split into separate rounds instead of just going 123455432112...ect?

Generate a number for every player once then snake draft.

The first issue is that a couple of the rounds are fairly minor, with the "color and faction name" round literally meaningless. In Snake, getting a good position in those is an actual disadvantage because it makes you go later in the next round which is comparatively more important. The other issue is that the people at 1 and 9 (me and Shiritai) would have a huge advantage in Snake because back-to-back picks are very powerful in Dominions.

Now yes, I ended up getting a double-pick anyway, but this way it was random rather than me assigning it to myself by designing the draft order. Also it only happened once, instead of happening eight times, which is what I would have walked away with in Snake. Getting to choose my first capital-only commander essentially simultaneously with my second build-anywhere open commander slot is a neat advantage. But Snake would have literally handed me exactly that advantage in addition to being able to match my second capital-only commander to my first build-anywhere troop, pick my second and third build-anywhere troop together, match my 4th build-anywhere troop to my first capital-only troop, match my second capital-only troop to the pretender god (virtually guaranteeing a proper bless synergy), and pick my first two national spells together.

Looking at the way that was going to work out, it seemed like hitting the random button was going to cause a lot less hard feelings.

Of the 17 meaningful Draft slots, your average place is 5.11. This makes you "screwed over" by about one ninth of a place on average. I think that means that you are overall one slot lower than your fair share on exactly 2 selections. I would be absolutely flabbergasted if there weren't at least three players who came in worse than you.

Nice math.

My feeling of being fucked over may come from the fact, that I'm high up on drafts I don't care about, but low on draft's I do care about.

3rd on Scout.
First on Priest.

8th on General (not that I care much about this one).

But I do care about this:
  • Build anywhere Commander, 7th and 14th.
  • Capital only Commander, 7th and 17th.
  • Build anywhere troop, 9th, 10th*, 24th and 28th.
  • Capital only Troop, 9th and 17th.
*Btw. did you count this as an first pick?

Sorry, still feeling fucked over.
Did not look at the others, there may be some who are more fucked over...

Will still play, but I'm really not counting on winning playing to win this one.
I think my goal will be, to be a king god maker...

Don't worry so much about it Korwin. It's not like you're getting stuck with Agartha, Ulm, or Oceania. Yeah, you probably won't get your first choices for stuff, but with a draft like this I think every nation can be competitive.
