CR 16 Badass
Okay, a friend's running a Tome game. He asked me to put together a CR 16 BBEG, and told me the sky's the limit. He's supposed to be a roving terror, although he could have undead minions.
I'm looking at....
Human-Sword Wraith
Fighter 4
Bone Rider 5
Death Knight 5
Miscellaneous 2 (Maybe Sword-Wraith Paragon, at least for the Str Damage ability.)
They've agreed that the Bone Rider Bonus Feats can be Combat Feats, and said the Spheres for the Death Knight can be switched if I go with Elemental Aura. They're debating whether Alertness and Iron Will from Sword Wraith Paragon will scale or just be the SRD versions.
The feats I'm looking at (11 total)
Mounted Combat
Dreadful Demeanor
Blitz
Lightning Reflexes
Master of Terror
Elusive Target
Whispers of the Otherworld
Ghost Cut Technique
Great Fortitude
Elemental Aura
And the feats that're options for the last two...
Horde Breaker
Whirlwind
Ennervating Touch
Phalanx Fighter
Sniper (if it affects the Master of Terror fear aura)
Skills that will necessarily be kept maxed out are:
Ride
Balance
Intimidate
Now. Telen here needs a decent mount. I was thinking about an undead dragon cohort from Master of Terror (and used as his Bone Rider mount), but I'm unsure how to approach it being undead, the Draconomicon being one of the books I don't have. I'm open to other suggestions, though.
Equipment for this guy is Book of Gears (to simplify things), so I'm looking at...
-Weapon
-Armor
-Miscellaneous number-buffers (Natural Armor, Str, etc.)
-Shield
-Anything that sounds cool
So I ask the Denizens, how's this looking so far? Anyone have any advice, suggestions, or guidance?

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Phshaw to the mount as a cohort.
You can totally use 20 of your 60 HD of undead to have a CR 13 Adult Zombie/Skeletal Dragon. Not only that, but you have the in-class ability to Awaken it to give it all of it's stuff back. Don't worry, you can still have a 40HD undead army with your <cha mod> ghostly assistants.
Note, if you want an even bigger dragon, you get get up to 30 HD...
As long as you are statting out epic equipment. Demon Armor, Soul Prison or Lifestealing sword, Some sort of epic whip/kuri-gama (Flaming, Wounding?), Giant Wings (or some item that grants them)....
More as I think of it....

It gets better. Bone Sphere animates whatever's killed by a spell-like ability, up to 10 HD at a time, with no control cap. Which is why he's got quite a lot of burned zombies following him...

Okay, a question:
Does anyone know if Unliving are still immune to Fatigue or Exhaustion? If they are, this guy is looking at beaucoup bonus HP from Great Fortitude.
Also, I'm looking at armor. Demon Armor works. But there doesn't seem to be an appropriate shield. Kite Shield works, I guess...
On a side note, I've just about got AC worked out. At level 16, it looks like he'll have 49 AC, not to mention the difficulties involved in approaching him. I'm sure Faely would be proud.
Oh, it's not against the rules to stack BoG properties on the same item, is it?

Even More Questions:
Is that at-will? And I assume it should be a Spell-like.Death Knight wrote: Army of the Dead (Su):A 2nd level Death Knight may raise undead as per animate dead or create undead with a caster level equal to his hit dice.

Swordwraith paragon should probably give Danger sense as the best approximation of Alertness; Iron Will as the combat feat.
The items you give him should probably depend somewhat on what the characters would benefit from, but a time distortion longbow and a soul prison heavy lance would be cool. Demon armor of madness and a bone wall of spell resistance would make for a formidable defense. Throw in a few spell arrows for good measure.
The mount should probably have barding. Might I suggest a magical dragonscale suit for irony?
The rest of the equipment depends on other factors, like whether he has the attributes to use his spells. A well of the worlds could be fun, and villains seem to do well with crystal balls.
An alternative path that I've looked at for a similar character is Samurai 1/Fighter 3/BR 5/Demon Samurai 5/DK 5, which gives a single 'open' sphere and the ability to take fiendish feats normally. That could work as an alternative to sword wraith paragon, although you'd have to decide which three levels to remove.

Thanks.
So far, he synergizes pretty well, especially with his mount. He gives it +10 Shield Bonus with his magic Kite Shield, and he also gives it his Dodge bonus (which is +6 or so). I'd also imagine him indeed having a Soul Prison Lance, as well a

CR 14 Cohort. I'm leaning towards using Bigode's Dragon class combined with Bone Rider (because it's simple) and just slapping a template similar to the Sword Wraith on it. Also, thanks to Bone Rider, his mount would have some serious bonuses going for it, like speed increases and being able to eat fallen enemies to heal.
-Aside from that, he can have any number of zombies following him, because of Sphere: Bone's special bonus, which lets him have as many zombies as he can kill with his spell-like abilities. I expect they're rather burned from Sphere: Fire.
-I can only assume he has three other lackeys who he's raised with his Death Knight powers and Whispers of the Otherworld.
-I have indeed thought of the Soul Prison Lance. But I also imagine that he has some backup weapons to use as he feels like.
I was thinking Demonic Sword of Wounding and Nastiness, Dagger of Ruin, and some sort of beatstick. Maybe even adapting the Smash Bat (meaning he can do a standard action to knock the shit out of someone).
I'm tempted to leave off Natural Armor and Deflection buffs, which would bring his AC down to about 42 at level 16. I also don't know anything about the PCs or what they'll be like when they challenge this guy, so they might be overmatched if I loaded him up on Moderate and Greater qualities.

Okay, let's see if I can get some info written down here...
Telen, CR 16
Fighter 4/Bone Rider 5/Death Knight 5/Sword Wraith Paragon 2
Beginning stats: Modified Champion Array (18, 16, 14, 12, 12, 10). +4 from Ability Increases.
Str 18 (24 from Belt)
Dex 12 (18 from Belt)
Con 14 (20 from Belt)
Int 12 (+2=14)
Wis 14 (+2 = 14)
Cha 16
Equipment:
+6 Demon Armor (Intimidate-boosting)
Belt of Physicality (+6 to Physical stats)
+6 Kite Shield (Not sure of the enhancement)
Possessions (switched out according to his mood):
+6 Lance (Soul Prison)
+6 Bastard Sword (I'll work on this...I think it should be special..)
+6 Warhammer (Or some other beatstick)
+Something else. A bow?
HP: Using one of the averaging methods and taking into account con boosts, I arrived at 195.
Saves: Just continuing them as straight progressions and using the Races of War rules for good saves, the base saves come out to...
Fort: 8
Ref: 6
Will: 12
I did, however, work out a progression (Basically, continuing poor save progression between classes, and if it's been the same number for three levels now, it goes up by 1) that gets him:
Fort: 9
Ref: 8
Will: 12
And taking into account ability score bonuses, he's looking at...
Fort +14 (+17 with Great Fortitude)
Reflex: +12 (+15 with Lightning Reflexes)
Will: +14. (+17 with Iron Will)
I could slap another +6 onto those if I wanted to, but...
He gets, by my count, 14 feats in all. They are:
Mounted Combat
Dreadful Demeanor
Master of Terror
Blitz
Great Fortitude
Whispers of the Otherworld
Phalanx Fighter
Elusive Target
Ghost Cut Technique
Elemental Aura (Fire)
Lightning Reflexes
(Free slot. Maybe Ennervating Touch or Sniper or something.)
And his Sword Wraith Paragon levels give him
-Danger Sense or Alertness
-Iron Will
Mind you, he's level 16, so he can get the full benefit of all those feats. Stacking all those abilities together, he's quite formidable.
Sphere of Fire gives him:
Fire
Special: You gain the [Fire] subtype.
Level, Benefits
1 Fireball
3 Scorching Ray
5 Firetrap
7 Wall of Fire
9 Fireshield
11 Incendiary Cloud
13 Blackfire
15 Fire Seeds
Bone
Special: Any creature of 10 HD or less killed by one of your spell-like abilities rises as a zombie under your control, with no control limits.
Level, Benefits
1 Command Undead
3 Descecrate
5 Animate Dead
7 Black Sand
9 Summon Undead V
11 Awaken Dread Warrior
13 Revive Undead
15 Awaken Undead
And he also has full Blackguard casting, for what that's worth.
His current armor bonus is looking like:
10 (Base)
15 (+6 Demon Armor)
10 (+6 Kite Shield)
6 (Dodge, includes Elusive Target)
For a total of...
41
-He might get an additional +3 from Natural Armor and +4 from Deflection, bringing him up to 48. I'll recommend those are reserved until it's seen whether the party will be able to hit him easily or not.
And his attack bonus looks like:
+16 BAB
+7 Strength bonus
+6 Weapon
--------------
+29, usually
+Whatever situational modifiers he gets

he is a BBEG, so I would say at least enter him into the wish economy by just giving him the +5 inherent stat increases. That'll reduce your need to increase the saves by a +6 by too much and you can give him a save item.
What do you mean by stacking BoG items on top of each other?

Like, for example, the belt gives +6 to Str, Dex, and Con. And I was thinking about the armor giving a bonus to Intimidate. Which would put his Intimidate check at having a +41 bonus at level 16. I wonder what the Intimidate DC is on giving someone a heart attack...
And, actually, I hadn't thought of the Wish economy, despite this guy having spent extensive time in the lower planes. Thanks for reminding me about that...

4 pcs. Starting from a relatively low level. They are...
Kantian Paladin
Female Dwarf Barbarian
Cleric
And someone who's aiming for a Boneblade Reaper, via Dungeonomicon Monk.
As for how min-maxed they are...Well, that's the thing. They aren't there yet. I just know the classes, and have some idea of how things will go. I'm trying to keep things at least a little fluid so he could be adjusted around to provide a suitable challenge.
Like, for example, the BBEG fights the Paladin early on, but lets him live because he's interested in seeing how powerful the Pally will be be later on--Mind you, this is core to Telen's viewpoint. He wants a good fight.
He does stuff, just for fun (like hanging from his dragon's claws and turning on the Aura of Fire as they skim over the heads of an army--essentially, drawing lines of fire through whole crowds of people), and wouldn't mind being beaten or even destroyed, as long as he had fun during the fight.
His entire purpose for raising an undead army and going around randomly razing villages and towns is just to raise hell, have fun, and force someone to get strong enough to challenge him.

Until now, I had never understood that the Kantian Paladin, the Cleric, and the Monk all leaned implicitly towards one gender (whatever it might be for each of their cases.)Maxus wrote:4 pcs. Starting from a relatively low level. They are...

Well, male human Paladin and Reaper, elf female Cleric. I felt the dwarf female Barbarian was notable enough to be worth mentioning.A_Cynic wrote:Until now, I had never understood that the Kantian Paladin, the Cleric, and the Monk all leaned implicitly towards one gender (whatever it might be for each of their cases.)Maxus wrote:4 pcs. Edit: Actually, would a female Boneblade Reaper have to go topless?

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

I've been re-doing some of this guy in preparation for a game I might run. I'm actually getting fond of him, for some reason. Then again, I sweat blood getting everything worked out the first time, so it's not surprising that I'm proud of him.
That said, I had an epiphany about his cohort, the dragon I made using Bigode's Dragon class.
Basically, it hinges on taking Product of Infernal Dalliance. With that, he can take Harmless Form and Greater Teleport (we-ell...not sure about the RAW supporting Greater Teleport, seeing as how it's a Monstrous feat with "Outsider" as a prerequisite, and PoID doesn't say it makes you an outsider). Just for fun, I had one of his three extra skills be Speak Language. With 17 ranks in it, this dragon's quite an accomplished translator.

First, I doubt F&K had much of an intention of making fiend and monstrous meaningfully different, so I'd support you (as for me, my plans consist of having a monstrous tag including fiendish stuff; maybe I'll have each feat have a sub-tag as well). Second, my dragon totally hinges on the character still having a race (it specifies which kind of dragon, and was expected to supply specific abilities), so you can slap the outsider type there (like the planetouched) if you want.Maxus wrote:Basically, it hinges on taking Product of Infernal Dalliance. The beatstick is used when he's on foot and wants to have some fun.

Notes/Comments/Questions:
Extensive bonuses from being Telen's Bone Rider mount, but the question is: How much? This is what it says:
Anyway. I went ahead and arbitrarily said Reg's base ground speed is 60 feet a round, which, thanks to Speed of the Dead, is 160 feet. His flight speed is 280. (Added in the +100 foot increase *after* the Dragon's fly-at-triple-landspeed at level 11, otherwise things could get a little crazy). Depending on what you consider a bonus, Reg could also get +1 HP per Telen's caster level and get even more speedy.
The in-game explanation is that Reg is Telen's second-in-command/scout/spy/mount/sounding board/best friend/luggage carrier/interpreter.

Caster level equal to caster level? Also, what the hell *is* his caster level? He's got full Blackguard casting, so would it be Caster level 10? Do spell-like abilities count for this?Versatile Riding (Ex): At 2nd level, the Bone Rider's mount gains the special bonuses of a phantom steed cast with a caster level equal to her caster level.

HOLEEFUCKENSHIT.
This is only vaguely related, but...
I was going over feats, and noticed Insightful Strike. I've seen it many times before, but.... Since I've been spending so much time with this level 16 character, it made me realize what would happen if one were to completely twink out Wisdom all the way to level 16
So, as a example, here's an Aasimar Paladin6/Celestial Beacon10
18 (base)
+ 2 (Racial)
+ 4 (Ability points)
+ 5 (Wish)
+ 2 (Celestial Beacon outsider conversion)
+ 6 (Item)
With a BAB of 16 and getting double his Wisdom to attack rolls (once for Insightful Strike 0 and again as his weapon's enhancement bonus), that's +42 to melee attack rolls right there. Combat School would raise it to +44, and give him the ability to take 10, giving him an effective attack roll of 54 whenever he felt like it, along with possible status effect.
And he'd have 16 levels of Paladin casting, and the Celestial Beacon abilities. His critical hits would be horrific, thanks to that +13 on weapon damage and the doubled multiplier and a few other things besides.
This doesn't have much to do with anything, really. Just...Dayum. That's scary.

Yeah, should be 10 - after all, the class has a built-in CL of its own, which scales up to 10. I suppose no one's gonna flame you if you say "fvck that, it's character level", since it's what almost everyone advocates and I don't even know why they didn't go with it.Maxus wrote:Caster level equal to caster level? That's stupid. Not that I'd be frightened by it either way, but because it invites ambiguity. If you care, RAW does say "stacks in most favorable way", IIRC. But I'm pretty compelled to make it just add a scaling huge speed bonus.Maxus wrote:(Added in the +100 foot increase *after* the Dragon's fly-at-triple-landspeed at level 11, otherwise things could get a little crazy)

Speed of the Dead says something to the effect of "+100 foot speed to all movement forms", so I just assumed that 60 feet becomes 160 feet, and 180 feet becomes 280.Bigode wrote:That's stupid. As a side note, one day I'm going to play a bone rider whose mounts all have the burrowing ability, just for that +100 foot bonus.

The "problem" (not saying you can't or shouldn't ignore it) is that RAW explicitly says you should add 100 to 60 and then triple that ...Maxus wrote:Speed of the Dead says something to the effect of "+100 foot speed to all movement forms", so I just assumed that 60 feet becomes 160 feet, and 180 feet becomes 280.
