Book of Gear suggested getting rid of stuff like Sacred, Profane, and Insight bonuses. I think.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Catharz: I was originally just going to quote from the pdf and show you the following. But you are correct. In that the Great Knight does get a profane bonus to strength. This might jsut be case where in order not to gyp the class, it was added in. Of course, I can't say I know the workings of either Frank or Keith's mind. So, we'd have to ask them.

See below for the quoted text.

Code: Select all

Non-standard bonus types, or as we like to call them around the office: bullshit bonus types do not exist.
No, you can’t have a Sacred Bonus to your AC or an Insight Bonus to your skills. That stuff is straight up
broken and will push characters right off the random number generator. If all of your eight magic items are
providing a bonus of some sort, they most definitely should not be providing a bonus to the same number –
that sort of thing really does make the d20 system fall apart.
Maxus: Since we two existing precedence, you can do whatever you want I suppose. But, just look at it and see which works better. The great knight is just a "PRC" (that doesn't do it justice but that's the best I can come up with in a short moment's notice) addition to the Knight and that's why it might have merited the profane bonus. That's a very weak attempt at reasoning on my part.

I really don't see much of a difference between an unnamed bonus and a profane bonus, except the profane bonus is a bit more flavorful.

But I'll leave it as an unnamed bonus, to make it fully Tome-compatible.

I think it's a case of "we thought better as we went", just like a PrC requiring Combat Expertise and Power Attack.

Yeah, well, anyone, those're the abilities I came up with for the Vengeant Knight. Problem is, I have this nagging feeling that a lot of them come late. Anyone have any pointers for the Vengeant Knight's progression/abilities? Given that I'm better at concepts/creative stuff than I am at making level-appropriate stuff...Consider me open to suggestion.

Finally got another chance to run the Paladin's game. It went well.

More exciting to me is my other prospective solo player finally came up with a character concept. She's thinking a revenant Fire Mage, out to avenge his own murder (which will be extremely easy to write adventures for, especially if his murderers are initially well beyond his ability to handle.)

She also mentioned a plant mage would be cool, as the story is that the character in question was murdered and then tied up as a scarecrow in his own pumpkin patch. After a few years, the mysteriously still-thriving vines grew up onto him, so his skeleton is wrapped in vines, and she mentioned his head/skull could be replaced by a pumpkin.

Any suggestions either way for the class?

Well, there's the pumpkin king (ToN bonus footage, scrolling down - also in the .pdf), but it's not really compatible with the fire mage. :(

I've already looked at it. Its abilities are interesting and would sorta fit theme--and I may eventually give him the ability to lead an undead army against his enemies, but, well...

Well, take the Pumpkin King, remove the Undead/Unholy parts, focus more on making plants grow in useful ways and using plants as weapons/objects.

No try to figure out how to make it a base class.

I could swipe some of the Pokemon moves from the PKMN d20, and they'd work out for individual abilities, but, okay, here's some ideas...

-Medium BAB, Good saves, d8 HD. Just like one of the Energy Mages.

-The ability to turn plants into magic weapons--like reshape a stick into a wooden sword that's far sharper than wood should be, or turn leaves into knives, or turn grass into something even more unpleasant to step on than caltrops.

-Making plants grow really, really fast. Fast enough to turn a packet of seeds into a landmine.

-Referencing the Pokemon D20, I like the idea of a free-form vine whip that lets the user grab and manipulate things from a distance. And then, at later levels, getting multiple whips.

-Using plants to ruin the day of people over large areas.

The sources I'm looking at are Pokemon, YuYu Hakusho (Kurama), Briar Moss from the Circle of Magic books...

Well, the Paladin game is on indefinite hold. We were both enjoying it, but he had to step out to concentrate on college, and, anyway, he wants to try to whip up his own setting.

On the other hand, I'm teaching a complete neophyte DnD. He's got the basics, so today we ran a little something to help him get the feel of combat. Next time, I'm going to help him get the feel of skill points. I helped him make a Barbarian, and he's doing pretty well.

For the overarching plot, I think I'm just going to go ahead and appropriate the Saberhagen Swords of Power. So he should pick up Stonecutter, which will be useful to his current situation of being lost in some old tunnels.
